 Gauri:

Gauri is a girl who has grown beyond her years having seen the cruel side of the world. She is mature, wise and despite being very young, can handle difficult situations. However, she is not brash or aggressive. In fact, her approach to situations is gentle and firm.
Gauri is a great devotee of Lord Shiva. She loves her mother dearly and it pains her to see her mother's struggle to lead a dignified life. She loves her father and still doesn't know the reason why he left them.
Gauri is a selfless person who does not balk at the idea of being a servant to the temperamental Rudra after an accident destroys her shop and means to a livelihood. She can see the goodness in Rudra which goes unnoticed by others.
Gauri is grateful for his kindness shown to her and her mother and gradually she falls in love with this temperamental, passionate, good-natured man. She falls in love with Rudra seeing his love for the other woman Pihu. Gauri longs for his love but never demands it.

Rudra:

Rudra is a passionate young man who loves Priyamvada (Pihu) to a fault and is heartbroken when she gets married to someone else. However, he is unwilling to let go of her memories.
As he suffers in his pain and torment, he also puts others through a lot of suffering too. He becomes aggressive, temperamental and throws major tantrums. However, he has a strong set of values in place.
On meeting Gauri, he never takes advantage of her. Despite her 'disreputable' background, he is the first person to give Gauri and her mother utmost dignity and respect. In doing so, he earns Gauri's lifelong gratitude and gradually she also falls in love with him. He is someone who loves to spread happiness in others' lives no matter how miserable his own life is...
No one in his palatial house has time to hear him out and he would have been a different person if they had. After Pihu ditches him, he takes to drinking. Gauri enters his life as a ray of hope.

Rajrani:

Rajrani is a desperate mother who is consumed by the sufferings of her son who is jilted in love. She tries to ease his pain by resorting to drastic measures without any thought for other's feelings including that of her own son.
For her, Gauri is just a pawn in her plan and she is 'sweet' and 'nice' to the girl in the beginning. But when her plan fails, Rajrani wants to get rid of Gauri and is furious when Gauri re-enters her house as the bahu.
Rajrani now begins to hate the girl and her family intensely. As a mother, she had never shown interest in bringing up her children. That's the reason why her children were never brought up like normal children.
For her, love and marriage are materialistic propositions. She is always maintaining relationships so that they can help her husband's business flourish. She is a control freak and is the strong matriarch running the household.

Kalavati

Kalavati is Gauri's maternal grandmother (nani). She is a colorful, lively person. She is carefree and follows her heart. She believes that her daughter's life would have been much better without having Gauri, and hence keeps taunting Gauri.
In her youth, she was a classical singer. Her husband deserted her as she wished to pursue a career in singing.
Kalavati therefore takes to singing at orchestras to make two ends meet and provide for her daughter. This brings on disrepute and shame because a woman was frowned upon in those days for taking up this vocation. The social ridicule has made her harsh and Gauri has to bear the brunt of her bitterness.
