Tellywood's filmi connect

Ever wondered why most faces on the small screen look familiar? Obviously, because you have seen them before on a bigger screen, albeit in regional film.

After mixed results at the BO, these lissome lasses seem to have struck gold and have emerged with lead roles in prime time shows on national telly. Today most of them are part of the bahu-beti brigade on the soap-box and command enviable fan following. The journey from regional cinema to small screen stardom wasn't very easy though.

The ever conniving Tapasya of Uttaran, Rashmi Desai used to be a familiar face in Bhojpuri films before she turned to television for more eyeballs. Earlier known as Divya Desai (for her regional cinema stint) she became Rashmi for her debut TV show Pari Hoon Main and the rest as they say is history. Divya has Balma Bada Naadan, Kab Hoi Gawana Hamaar, Mai Re Kar De Bedai Hamaar and Bambai Ki Laila Chapra Ka Chaila to her credit! The girl has also done some Assamese, Bengali and Manipuri movies. Not bad huh! In her words she wanted to "do something better than Bhojpuri so I thought I'd give television a try." And now, she is even dancing her way in the reality TV show, Zara Nachke Dikha 2.

As Nupur of Miley Jab Hum Tum, a bubbly young girl who loves Bollywood, Rati Pandey is a small screen star. In real life, however, Rati's stint with Telegu films includes the average Student, after which she shifted gears to the small screen. Rati claims she has done two movies down south and she felt "TV looked like the right option" . Debuting on telly with Shaadi Street, Rati went on to do Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai and then landed Miley Jab Hum Tum.

Perky model Neha Julka started off her showbiz career with a Telegu film Viyayalavari Kayyalu opposite Uday Kiran in 2007, followed by another Telegu movie Okkadunnadu. But once Neha realised that she needed a bigger platform to become a popular face, she chose television. Having done many print and TV ads, she's currently doing Dill Mill Gaye.
Suhasi Goradia who played the lead opposite Sairam Shankar in the Telugu film, Vade Kavali and also did Mansu Pilichindi is today Swarn Abha in Yahan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli. Suhasi has also had a stint with Malayam films.

Coincidence best describes Sarah Jane Dias' stint with the glamour entertainment world. A VJ for a popular music channel, Sarah wanted to play up her talent further and gave regional cinema a shot when she made her debut with the Tamil romantic comedy Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai opposite Vishal Krishna.

Of course telly divas' and their reel tryst is nothing new. Ekta Kapoor's favourite muse Anita Hasnandani had also done films like Nenunnau, Sreeram, Nuvvu Nenu, Santosha before she landed the lead role in Kavyanjali. Chandigarh lass Surveen Chawla, (yes the same one who was rumoured to be dating cricketer Sreeshanth after they came together for a reality dance show), had done Paramesha Panwala (Kannada) Raju Maharaju (Telugu) before she became popular with Kasauti Zindagi Kii and Kajal. Shilpa Anand, who used to essay the female lead's role in Dill Mill Gayye a couple of years ago, also used to be a popular Tollywood star before she joined TV. Even Tina Dutta, the petite Iccha of Uttaran has done her share of Bangla films.

By the looks of it, regional cinema sure seems to have been the perfect launchpad for our small screen divas before they achieved greater fame and popularity..
