Sarah, wonderful post as usual! And as usual, I'm here late and haven't read any of the replies to your post. But here are my thoughts on the subject.
There are definitely contrasts between the brothers.
Prithvi the rational
Sameer the emotional
Prithvi knows his limits
Sameer knows no limits
Prithvi is limited by his conscience
Sameer shreds conscience to bits and pieces
Prithvi was instantly clear about next steps and that no plan of theirs should hurt the innocent girl and baby involved
Sameer needed time to think
Prithvi knows that the mother's actions are separate from the daughters'
Sameer gets confused about this distinction
Prithvi values vows and promises
Sameer will use whatever words necessary to get his way, and if they are vows then be it.
But something they do have in common is
Both have a heart.
Both let their hearts cloud their minds.
Prithvi wears his heart on his sleeve
Sameer well, his heart is a little misplaced but its around somewhere.
What it comes down to is INTENT.
I think Sam's intent in sleeping with Avni was to get her more emotionally involved in the marriage, so as to cause the most hurt. For a woman sex is about emotion. Especially a woman like Avni. Getting her pregnant was not the intention. That said, he was still wrong. The other thing is, his intent was to get her fully involved - physically and emotionally, but in the process he himself got emotionally involved. And then followed the remorse.
But all that doesn't justify his actions. His intent was wrong, regardless of what happened in and after the execution.
But what is Prithvi's intent? He agreed to marry Damini before he found out about the will and the money. So that wasn't part of his plan. Why did he agree? Was his intent to marry her and leave her? No, it can't be 'cos he says vows are not mere words to him. This leads me to think that he agreed to marry Damini because he knows that he wouldn't by lying when he takes the vows to care for her, love her, be there for her. He agreed to the marriage because he intends on doing just that. But in the process there's the added advantage of getting in a place that allows him to hurt Ila. What he's having trouble with is how to hurt his enemy without hurting his wife (to be). So, going with this train of thought, Pritvhi would have intended this marriage to be real in every sense of the word, including consummating it. But maybe Sameer's taunt brought home the point that there ain't much difference in the two marriages except the intent with which each has been undertaken.
But then intent makes a big difference, even if the end result is the same. So in short, Prithvi is the right one here. (And this opinion has nothing to do with my bias).
