Chapter XX

Months passed slowly. Varad generated the idea that changed Astha's life completely. He suggested her starting fundraising activity. At first through his newspaper then... time would tell what would happen then. She had studied the subject with a great interest and later became addicted to that. Now she knew exactly where Mr. Shlok Agnihotri's money would flow as she was not interested in it for herself. She would make a donation. Astha chose interesting charitable institutions and met the manager of each. Her name was the key towards any door; she founded Charitable Trust and began organizing public events such as concerts, festivals, and parties etc to raise funds in best interest of the destitute. With the course of time without any special efforts Astha became what people called a socialite. Astha started using her entire luxurious wardrobe keeping in mind her public status: she was photographed every day and got used to it, her shining Mercedes was 'flying' along the streets of Pune like a white arrow. Astha was feeling much better as she felt she was needed; she could laugh again, after all she had so many happy memories and so many things to be grateful for. She was loved by her parents, friends and colleagues but at the bottom of every heart there is sediment...

Astha knew the only way to move forward was to forgive him, to let him go. He paid quite handsomely for his crimes; he has made her a wise rich and independent woman and that was not so little, was it? He has taught her the most important lesson of her life: to think before you act and use your brain instead of relying childishly on your heart.  She felt she should look at herself more meticulously - he has never forced himself on her, never asked for something except maybe that single kiss she would not forget. All she has ever given to him was her own free will. So who was to blame? Maybe this was the right time to stop looking for the culprit and start taking her life just as it was.

...

Mr. Shlok Agnihotri survived the storm of the divorce with extreme tranquility. All the subordinates and relatives knew that this was once and for all closed topic which was never to be discussed again. Entering the office he saw girls reading insatiably the articles dedicated to his personal life, "Her" interviews or speculations on the subject. He was born rich and would die so besides God granted him smart brains and good looks so he got used to be in the centre of attention. Being a public figure he has learnt to accept regard philosophically.

He was an eligible bachelor again at thirty two. Once he mocked wines and waters in figurative sense... Life has thrown his mockery back into his face. All his life was spread out before him like a table cloth. This table cloth offered him all the possible drinks starting with 'wine' and ending with 'spirits'. It was a pity he has never tasted alcohol since Swati's death. He drank only water but he deprived himself of water' without drinking anything else. What an irony!

He had to be very careful with his desires and words as they had a frightening tendency to come true.

All his friends were ready 'to save' him from 'loneliness' introducing him to new women practically every day. What an interesting experience was a social life: everybody was acquainted with Mr. Agnihotri but nobody knew him. Shlok was a public figure with a smile he used to wear like a uniform; that smile covered the void he felt inside as his boredom has turned into something different.

Shlok talked to his father rarer as there were no common subjects to discuss. Shlok was not dependent from him in anyway; the connection between them was thinning with every phone call, Shlok forgot when he saw Niranjan for the last time, he was not curious or concerned; he felt Mr. Niranjan Agnihotri has turned into a stranger for him. That stranger once did him a favor and Shlok paid him back, with interest, they were quits - that's how he saw it. Niranjan bribed the police and closed the question' in the past but for his son life as usual prepared the test more complicated: he paid for his crime with his soul and peace of mind. Could it be measured in coins?

It looked like Shlok was cursed: the more success and wealth he achieved the more miserable his life became. He felt boredom most of the time and therefore he looked for fun everywhere: new places, new people, new experiences not everything being legal but he did not care but if he was so damn lucky why there was a taste of ashes in his mouth?

He percieved some strange changes in himself. Without any explainable reason he wanted to know where was 'SHE'. Inwardly, he called herself only so. Only one person was aware of his strange interest - Suresh. He was responsible for a dossier' as Suresh called the files dedicated to Mrs. Astha Shlok Agnihotri. He knew she was on friendly terms with Varad, started new projects. Shlok could call Suresh any moment and ask where 'SHE' was and his PA knew the answer. Shlok's assistant was not in the habit of judging his boss but if anybody had ever asked his opinion he would have said that divorce was not... ah... nobody would ever ask.

Shlok  was not sentimental but he could not forget 'Her' eyes, tender kisses and gentle hands. He deliberately rejected the idea to change the bed they shared. She was sincere twenty four hours a day living with him but he was sincere only in that exact bed whether she believed it or not. That was incredibly easy as that girl was so wonderful.

He remembered their fight at the hall. His tiny spouse was ready to tear him into pieces, she became violent. He had no idea she was so passionate. Where was his shy and timid girl? Things looked different from a distance. God wanted to make fun of him one more time: he remembered himself telling his father that if Mr. Niranjan Agnihotri chose her for him she would suit him. That was what happened literally: she suited him.  He should keep his mouth shut in future.

Even more often he remembered their accident in her Mercedes. Observing her dancing and jumping in the street he felt ... envy, yes, that was the right word. He envied her openness to the world. She, like a child, could see the wonders where he saw only the laws of physics. Sunsets, monsoons, tasty food could bring her in raptures. It must have been so thrilling for her - to live...

...

He was sitting in his car near one of the Universities he sponsored waiting for a business partner when unknowingly he focused his attention on a group of students standing nearby. They were eating some cheap street food and laughing; the air around them was filled with joy, sincere interest and youthful energy, they did not care for their looks or reputation they were happy to see each other and were splashing that limitless sunshine around. Shlok opened the door and got out of his car and slowly went towards the joyful group. He had no intention to join them it was just an unconscious desire to absorb the sunshine and joy they produced but ... somehow it did not work...

At that exact moment Mr. Shlok Agnihotri realized with utmost clarity he was desperately unhappy...

It dawned on him he could not be warmed by somebody's delight, he had to generate it himself deep inside; unfortunately he had no idea how to do it. No one has taught him to love, to be happy, to hope... Mother died twenty years ago he could hardly remember her face and his father was not the man to learn that from.   He could speak, read, write, count but that could not bring him closer to those young lads. The guys noticed him approaching and stopped talking looking at him questioningly. Immediately, they noticed his 'red fire', his Ferrari and froze in astonishment; they observed him - tall, attractive, prosperous, and successful and he sensed their envy which was practically palpable, he got used to it with the years, only this time he felt bitterness as they were so mistaken, he wished he could explain them they were under delusion; they were richer than him as they possessed something money could not buy... and it was he who was a poor beggar who could buy everything except one thing worth having...
