Maybe he really is a super hero in disguise. Looks of a Greek God and strength of a Super Hero. After battling broken back, shoulder and the major brain surgery which he underwent recently, this man did not have any qualms about flying in the sky and jumping from sky scrappers. He does not believe in giving up and falling weak to anything in life. He wears the cape and the mask of Krrish
and is all set to save the world. India Forums in a candid chat with the man who can fly, Hrithik Roshan
Krrish 3 has been a very difficult film for everyone on board...
Every film has its ups and downs. Yes, this film has had more ups and downs. It was the challenge that we chose. It is a kind of film which felt impossible to make when we started to make it, regarding the budget, regarding how we shoot this film. He is an Indian superhero, but how do we make him save India because we cant shoot in the outdoors in India. How do you shoot India Gate or some place where there is crowd? I started out with a double slip disk in my back and the doctors told me to not do this or any action film for the rest of my life. But every struggle leads to courage, finding back the power inside you and going for it. Now that we are out of it and traverse our journey, its very very rewarding that we had the opportunity. Now we look back like the opportunity that we had and we took to better, more powerful and contribute through cinema to the world.
You were not physically fit when you were flying around to save the world. Isn't it?
When the shooting started and every time I wore the Krrish
jacket, I felt like I was unstoppable. I went through an 80-85 day action schedule and I felt like I was 18 years old. I had done a lot of research for my problems. My knees were bad, my back was bad, my shoulders were broken. I used whatever resources I had my life, I was like Humpty Dumpty and I then put myself back. Signs told me that it is impossible, I did something and it made me realise that everything is possible.
Krrish 3 is constantly being compared with Iron Man, Avengers, X Men, Batman. What would you want to say to everyone?
Comparisons are good, that tells us that today we have a film of that genre that can be compared in terms of special effects, a superhero genre which up until now was non existent. I am just happy that now in our cinema we have something that we can present on a world platform as Indians. As for us Indians, this is our first fully home grown high budget super hero VFX musical extravaganza. Its a very proud feeling that my father decided that if this film gets made, he wants it to be done by Indians. All hands in this film will be Indian hands. Imagine the kind of pride, motivation and encouragement that our artists will get as up until now nobody had enough faith in them to give them an opportunity like this. My father has given them an opportunity and after this the whole world will open up for them. The fact that we have crossed 17 million views on youtube just means that even people who are not hindi film watchers are curious about what India is making. There is no other way that it can cross the likes of avengers and other films in numbers.
These days many film makers are opting out of songs in their films. Was it easy or difficult to incorporate songs in a sci-fi film?
There are a lot of ways to incorporate songs in a film. My father is from a school of thought where music is very important for a film and it is a lot difficult to incorporate music in this film purely because of the screen play that it has. You cant have mutants, Kaal and a superhero dancing. You could have songs in Krrish
because he was a mountain boy, he was carefree, falling in love. It was difficult but I am very confident that when you see the film you'll feel that it has been integrated beautifully. I don't think that it will ever happen that all hindi films would be made without songs. Maybe a background track that would be a part of the film and help raise the awareness of the film. We're Indians, I mean come on we celebrate and mourn with music. We are musical people. Music is in our blood.
Vivek Oberoi is the super villain to this super hero. How was working with him? Vivek Oberoi
is one of the best actor worker that I have worked with. He is a complete team player and he was my first choice for Kaal. When we started out thinking that who could be Kaal, I had 2 names. My first name was myself, I said let me play Kaal because I would love to do it. They didn't allow me and told me to shut up. My second choice was Vivek. No body else would be able to play Kaal as good as him because he has got the intensity, the voice and he is an earnest actor. He has done a brilliant job in the film.
You're going back to Rohit after a long time in Krrish 3. How difficult was the transition from being Krrish to Rohit?
It was difficult to reprise Rohit from Koi Mil Gaya. Rohit is supposed to be very child like. He is a child and he is mentally challenged. Now I have also grown up, its been 10 years, I wasn't sure if I can play that vulnerable character. My face has changed, my resonance has changed. I was thinking if I still have the body language of Rohit. It was a big challenge. Rohit is not just a child any more, he is also a father. So to balance out the child like qualities and have the strength to put his hand on his son's shoulder and say that I am your father. That required a lot of thinking. Rohit is the hero of the film, more than even Krrish
or Krishna. The entire story revolves around him from Koi Mil Gaya to now. So I knew that I had to get Rohit right and hopefully I have. It was very difficult especially after playing Krrish
all day and night on cables and get into the make up room and spend 3 hours doing the make up of Rohit. Then to get to the emotional space of Rohit, go back into the same frame and act opposite air, because Krrish
who is me is not standing there.
As a kid you had a stammering problem, then back problems came your way and now the surgery that you just underwent. How did you cope up with everything and managed to stand tall right through it?
They say, life is not about holding the best cards, its about how well you play the cards you've been dealt with. I wasn't dealt the best cards but had some good cards and I played them well. Now when I look back and join the dots, I realise that every time when I thought that I cant do something and told myself that I will try and would do it, I was victorious. Every weak moment of mine has been relabelled as strength. If your attitude is of a superhero which I have learned, you have to do what it is in your control, leave the rest and don't assume.
This is the 5th time that you and your father are working together. So have you ever taken leverage of being a director's son at times?
With my dad (Laughs). In fact for the first schedule when my back was bad. I was an assistant on Krrish
3 for 2 months. I was putting the costume on for Vivek, cleaning. I was acting out how the mutants should act. I was behind the lights. I was doing that for 2 months when I wasn't acting because I needed 2 months to recover from my slip disk. Our equation has not changed at all. It has evolved into something very nice. There is much more mutual respect. Earlier when I used to suggest something he used to tell me, not good and walk around walk around and do exactly what I have said. Now when I suggest something, he listens first and then he walks around. Then maybe he comes back and says it's not good. So the opposite is happening now.
Who has given the best reaction to your performance in Krrish 3?
Sussanne. The reaction I have got from her for Krrish
is the best reaction I have got from her in my whole life. She told me that this is the best film that I have ever done. She is my biggest critic. I don't know if I can go by that but its a great feeling. If Sussanne was not there, I don't think I would have been an actor. I was a very shy child and when she became my girlfriend, I was like Wow!!!! I have a girlfriend and all ( Laughs). She empowered me and told me that I can do it and that is how it started.
is going to be a completely drastic film from Krrish
and that's how I like it. I love bouncing off from one thing to the other so monotony is not there in life because the only thing that can saturate you is that you're doing the same thing over and over again. So I am quiet happy and excited to move forward in life now.
