It does not pay you to be too passionate about your work on television
Says screenplay writer Sonal Ganatra who is an independent woman in her own right and has made it big as a writer in the Television industry.

The talented screenplay writer has managed to grab the eye balls of the audience with her interesting episodes for many television shows such as the sit-com show Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, , Ek Packet Umeed, Sukh By Chance, Saas Bina Sasural and Na Bole Tum Season 1 and Season 2. The writer is no longer associated with the show Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha Sesaon 2 after the show was revamped. Currently she is writing the daily soap Chhanchhan on Sony TV.
When asked Sonal about her love for writing which started at a very young age, she says "At the age of 14 my poem got published in Times Of India newspaper. I wrote a comic poem on my school teacher. As I belong from a family of publishers, reading inspired me to get into writing. At the age of 19, I wrote a novel named ' 'Partitioned Hearts'."
Sonal started as a reporter, "I was a reporter for 8 long
years. I was a political reporter for my newspaper 'Aarti'.
It was a regional newspaper."
When asked how did she land in Mumbai, the 'City of dreams' all the way from Rajkot, she says "I came down to Mumbai in 2004 and started with screenplay writing. I was an associate writer for Hats Off Productions show Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai and then the journey is still heading further."
Sonal has faced many ups and downs throughout her journey, "Yes, I have faced lot of ups and downs during my journey. There came a point when I thought that this field is not meant for me. I was getting a lot of offers but I did not want to take them up as they were typical Saas-Bahu shows. But then later I got many offers of my interest."
So what lesson has Sonal learnt, "It does not pay you to be too passionate about your work on television... that is the lesson that I have learnt. Just be professional, give your best to the team and the project that you are working for and do not expect anything more than your remuneration."
It was not always easy going for Sonal who had to face lots of difficulties in the initial days, "When I came to Mumbai it was really difficult to buy an apartment of my own and a car that I have now. That was the struggling period that I remember. Nothing comes to you easily, you just have to make it easy. But by being independent you tend to realize the responsibility and one should use independence very wisely."
Sonal talks about how she celebrates Independence day now, "Independence day was celebrated during my school and college days and then as a reporter I used to attend flag hoisting ceremonies write reports about the same. But after coming to Mumbai and getting into the entertainment field I only celebrate Independence Day by putting a flag in my car and watching the Independence Day ceremony on news channels."
"But yes, we should all celebrate the spirit of Independence."
