'Beyhadh' may be just four episodes old but has managed to attract several eyeballs and has earned a lot of appreciation already. The show has flagged off to a promising start and it is Jennifer Winget who is getting special accolades.
You made your debut with 'Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hai' and you make your fiction comeback with 'Beyhadh'. Why did you take so long for a comeback with a fiction show?
As you mentioned I did 'Ek Hazaron Mein...' which ran for two years and then I was into reality shows doing 'Bigg Boss Saath 7' and 'Fear Factor..' back-to-back. However, in Fear Factor..', I broke my hand and had to go through an operation. Once all this ended, I planned to take a one year sabbatical. In that period, I signed two films too. However, I backed out due to creative issues. I preferred to be called and known as an A-lister of television rather than doing films just for the sake of it. I am extremely happy in my comfort zone.
And talking about working in films, I believe that till you haven't done your first film, your fist is closed. So, whenever I do my first film I want to be the best. I want to win all the awards for it just like I won awards for my first show. I want to have that Filmfare Best Debut Award' when I do my first film. All this time, I got many offers but did not take up anything till 'Beyhadh' and this show is meant to revolutionize television.
The current trend of supernatural genre is getting trendier with every passing day. Would you be open to do such shows?
To be honest, I just cannot do such shows at all. That isn't cut for me. However, such shows also have a mass audience and that explains why those shows are doing so well. When it comes to me, I would never do that. 'Beyhadh', for me, is a very real show. This is that kind of a show where even if I wouldn't have been a part of, I would still watch it at home.
Tell us a bit more about your character..
As the show's title suggests, everything in the show is beyhadh. When it comes to Arjun, he is extremely ambitious. He wants to own Mumbai and he wants to be the richest person. And the manner in which all of this is hurdled when two kinds of love enter his life where one is obsessive love of Maya (Jennifer Winget) and selfless love by Saanjh (Aneri Vajani).
The show is about extreme and obsessive love. In your personal life, have you been the same?
I am not at all possessive and obsessive when it comes to love. I believe in giving space and not bothering too much and holding that person. If you love a person set them free; if they come back, they are yours and if they do not, set them of fire.
It is great to see that content-driven shows are finally making it to Indian television. However, they do not fetch the ratings like other shows do. What do you have to say about that?
Precisely my point! When it comes to 'Beyhadh', this is not a show for the audience that follows 'Naagin' or any such shows. This is a very urban show. We are not looking for a 3 points or 2.5 points TRPS. We are looking for a response where the people who watch it would say that yes, I have seen something good. I have seen a good show.' And Sony doesn't have that much of a GRP (Gross Rating Points) so far. And I say so far, as we have seen in recent weeks, Sony has come up to the third spot and this show specifically is driving force for not only Sony but for myself, Jennifer and Aneri too. Also, it is known that it is a finite show and we have stuck to the principle that even if we get great TRPs, we are not going to extend it for the sake of it. If it works well, we will come up with a second season. It is a 260 episode finite series.
Several TV actors, when asked about whom they like form the television industry have mentioned Jennifer's name. Do you believe the same?
Absolutely! Jennifer is one of the prettiest women in television industry. And according to me, there are just two or three beautiful women in the industry and she is one of them. The other being Nia Sharma and Gauahar Khan and I have worked with all of them, so I feel great about it.
We hope this conversation was enlightening to all the readers..!
