Pretty Sonal Vengurlekar who is currently essaying the character of Ruhi in Channel V's popular show Dil Dostii Dance, finds it challenging to essay this character as Ruhi is shown to be a psychotic and possessive person.
Here is Sonal sharing her experience of playing a negative character, what interests her- daily soaps or youth centric shows and much more...
How has been your experience playing Ruhi so far?
Ruhi is a very different character which was very challenging for me to play. Most of the times, I have given auditions for bubbly kind of roles. When I gave audition for this character, I was briefed differently about it as it's going to be similar to what Anushka Sharma played in Jab Tak Hai Jaan but later the character changed into a psycho and split personality kind of a girl. So, it's little difficult for me to play this character. My co-actors support me to play this character. I am learning a lot. I never wanted to play a negative character but now I am playing it as it has turned out to be like that. I am getting to learn new things by playing this character. I was told that this character actually isn't negative; it's a character which will confuse the audience and they will wonder whether they should hate my character or pity my character. I just tried to give my best to this character.
How challenging was it for you to get your character evolved?
In real life, I am very bubbly and fun loving person so it becomes difficult for me to act with negative expressions and even my looks doesn't go well with a negative character. Sometimes, I even get scolding from my director sir that I should look negative and I should concentrate (laughs). I try hard to get a negative look but still it hardly happens but I am getting to learn a lot. I used to play an angry girl in The Buddy Project Season 2 - Now in College and now by playing this character, I have got to learn a lot. Now, I will be careful while choosing characters to play because I am playing this which I don't know but if I would have done something which I am aware off, then I would have done it better.
You must be getting lot of hate mails from the fans...
I keep getting hate mails from the fans. Sometimes, I choose not to reply but sometimes I reply them that I am just playing a character which is meant to be criticized by the audience. Fans message me like why did you choose this character to play? You should leave acting now.' So, I don't know what to reply them so I don't reply.
How is the off-screen life on the sets? With whom you share the best bond with?
Everybody is very friendly and we have lots of fun together on the sets. I share my room with Vrushika Mehta so I share a good bonding with her and we talk a lot. I also share a good bonding with Shakti Mohan. She treats me like a sister and I get to learn a lot from her.
Having done daily soaps and youth centric shows, what interests you more?
Life is relaxed in youth centric shows. We don't have too much burden here but life is little strict in daily soap like if you don't know anything then you have do it even if you don't know anything about it. While doing a youth centric show, we get time to learn things with the help of your co-actors and your director. I like doing this youth show but after this show, I would like to do a prime channel's show and not a youth one. I would like to play a bubbly kind of a role similar to what Kareena Kapoor played in Jab We Met.
What do you feel about the character of Ruhi?
Ruhi is lonely in her life. She has never got attention from her Mom and Dad. Her brother has got all the attention from her parents so she tries to find love in every person. She becomes over possessive for the person she loves. She becomes ready to die for that person and even to take life of any other for that person.
What do you like and dislike about the character of Ruhi?
It's good that she can do anything for the person whom she loves but it is wrong that she can even harm the person for doing something bad to the person whom she loves. She does all this because of the disorder she has possessed.
Anything which you find the best about Ruhi's character?
I didn't find anything best in her yet. If I don't like it then I can understand that how the audience must be feeling (laughs). I like the craziness in her. She is ready to accept any kind of challenge and she can do anything to achieve it.
What are your future plans?
In future, I would like to play a nice character in a prime time show.
All the best Sonal!
