Everyday several people land up in Mumbai, with dreams in their eyes to become a star. However, it is very crucial to be at the right place, at the right time to grab the golden opportunity.
We all have our share of untold stories and struggles in life. Especially in the Indian television industry, there are lot of secrets and struggles that actors go through. Today we get you the story of actor Jaskaran Singh who has struggled hard to reach where he is today.
Jaskaran is Karan Singh Grover's cousin and is well remembered as Uday from the show Miley Jab Hum Tum on Star One. At present, the very talented actor is essaying a pivotal role in Life OK's popular show Do Dil Ek Jaan.
Let's see what does Jaskaran has to share with us...
Tell us something about yourself.
I am an Indian. I was born in Indore, after that I did my kindergarten from Bombay. Since my Dad wanted to start a business in Chandigarh, I moved there. Till my 5th grade I was in Chandigarh and then later I shifted to Bhopal because my grandparents stayed there. So, I feel I am very fortunate to have lived in all the corners of India. In fact this has even helped me in my acting career because I'm not bound to a particular accent and I'm very fluent with my Hindi and I've also learnt Sanskrit for 6 years.
How did acting happen to you?
Actually, I always wanted to be an actor. But my father made one thing very clear to me that in case acting doesn't work, then he is not going to provide me with any kind of support. The reason being, I'm not from an extremely well-to-do family and my father told both his sons that you should learn the hard way. So to begin with, I took up a job as an operational analyst in 3G Company and got into the comfort zone of working. The day my Boss told me I was going to be promoted as a Assistant Manager designation, I resigned because I wanted to try my luck in the acting industry. While I was staying with my cousin brother Karan Singh Grover when he was associated with the show Kasauti Zindagi Ki, he guided me as to how to begin and go about and that's how I started struggling.
Can you share something about your struggling days?
I have had no Godfather and my struggling days were crazy. As I said earlier since I gave up my job, my finances dried up and I had no monetary support. Consequently, to overcome the financial crisis, I took up a job at a call center. I used to work the entire night because then my job was from night 10 pm till morning 10 am. Then I used to be on my toes the entire day for the auditions, come back home at 7 pm, sleep for an hour, get up and work out for another half an hour and get back to my call center job again. To tell you the truth, for one and a half years I've slept for only 1-2 hours in a day and I'm not exaggerating.
Do you think Miley Jab Hum Tum has been a turning point in your career?
I would say that it was a very good break and the show was really popular. Doing a television youth show, was like a dream come true. The show got me a lot of recognition but after the show got over; call it the pros or cons of tasting a little success, I had the darkest phase of my life, which ended with Do Dil Ek Jaan after 3 years. Till three years I didn't get any offers, things used to be finalized and get cancelled at the very last moment. I had no work after Miley Jab Hum Tum, and this phase happened immediately after I got married. It was the darkest phase of my life but it has made me very tough now.
How did you cope up with the stress and emotional breakdown?
I started working out twice a day. Moreover, I started getting trained at Martial arts and I learnt it for nearly three years. I indulged myself in lot of gaming. My brother Karan and my wife Ashwini supported me a lot and never let me down.
Has television given you good friends?
I'm in touch with everybody from my past show Miley Jab Hum Tum. Recently I went to Arjun Bijlani's marriage; I met Mohit Sehgal a couple of days back below my building. And just few days back I messaged Sanaya Irani when she performed at Jhalak. Yet, I would say the only 3 am friend I have in this world is my brother Karan, and I think I am also his only best friend.
How do you relate with your on-screen character Mach-Mach in Do Dil Ek Jaan?
Well I would relate with Mach-Mach more than I related to Uday in Miley Jab Hum Tum. Mach-Mach is more like me and he is more real. He has only one best friend, he is very emotional, gets angry and cracks stupid jokes. He will shed tears when he realizes his best friend Raghu has been hurt. So, at a personal level also, I'm very emotional and I think it is very important for an actor to be expressive.
With whom do you bond the best on the sets of Do DiL Ek Jaan?
Well, I bond the best with everybody on the sets. I share a room with Ayaz Ahmed and things are pretty cool with Nikita. In fact, Aaji (Jayshree T) is my companion in most of the scenes, so I share a very good rapport with Aaji.
Are you active on social media?
Not at all. I have an account on Facebook but since I don't get time I don't access it much. I'm planning to open up a Twitter account soon.
Do you believe in destiny?
Of course I believe in destiny but now I also believe in sheer hard work. Destiny has played a very funny game with me. Even in my present show Do Dil Ek Jaan, it's my hard work that has helped me to get more space and better scenes.
What kind of roles do you wish to play in the future?
I would love to host a travel show or a cookery show. Though I'm not a certified chef but I cook pretty decent food. Also I would love to be a part of reality shows, especially Khatron Ke Khiladi because I'm very confident that I'll win it. Most of the stunts I've seen, even I can perform them really well. Touch wood, I don't even have any phobias or fears. Also, I would love to be a part of a dance reality show because both my Mom and my wife thinks that I'm a very pathetic dancer. Therefore, I want to prove them wrong, as I love to take challenges.
The last three years I did not have a plan B and I struggled a lot when I did not get shows. All this apart, in the meanwhile I did produce two shows in between for a channel called Food Food. I produced Secret Recipes with Sanjeev Kapoor and I produced Style Chef under my friend's production.
Who has been your inspiration in the industry?
I've got a lot of help and guidance from Karan Singh Grover. He is such a brilliant actor, and everybody knows that I'm his brother so I have to keep trying very hard to keep up that family name and tradition. In Bollywood, I admire Irfan Khan, Pankaj Kapoor and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
Describe yourself in one sentence.
Extremely strong headed and impossible is not there in my dictionary.
What philosophy do you follow in your life?
Take every day as it comes, enjoy it, sleep in the night and wake up to a new morning the next day.
