"Script is of utmost importance to me"- Mohnish Behl

Mohnish Behl in a candid chat with on his show Kuch Toh Log Kahenge on Sony TV

Sony TV's popular show Kuch Toh Log Kahenge produced by Rajan Shahi brought back to television one of the finest actors in the industry. Mohnish Behl, who created waves as the strict Shashank Gupta of Star One's Dill Mill Gayye is now back as the soft and sensitive Dr. Ashutosh in the show.

In a candid chat with TellyBuzz, Mohnish spoke about what made him come back in the show and his views on television today.

You are back on television after a break, do you see any changes?
There is not much of a change in the industry and it is pretty much the same. There have been no strict changes at all.

What was the reason for you to take up the show?

There are a number of reasons for why I took up the show. I have not done a lot of shows on television and there had been only a little bargain when the show had approached me. There had been only quite a few shows on television. Script is of prime importance in any project and it is of superior importance to me. There has to be a motivation in the script to agree for the show and I felt the creative motivation. Apart from that, the other basic reasons include the channel- one of the best in India, the banner- Rajan Shahi's Director's Kut. The script is really beautiful wherein I liked the concept of bringing two different individuals-a young and middle aged-together. I like the process of falling in love rather than the fell in love part. The psychological insecurity of the man as the girl is very young and is portrayed beautifully in the show.

Have you seen the show Dhoop Kinare from which the show is inspired?
No, I have not seen the show. In fact, I was not aware that the show was adapted from Dhoop Kinare and I do not think I will watch the show because there is always a tendency to get influenced by the parent show and its characters.

How is it working with Kritika Kamra?

Kritika is a very fine actress and it is a tough role to carry. She is doing well.

Alok Nath and you have been associated for a long time wherein you have worked as a father and son earlier. How is it working with him again?

Yes we had worked with Rajshri and apart from that we have been associated with various other projects. It has been a pleasure working with him again.

This is the first time you are working with Rajan Shahi and Director's Kut. How has the experience been so far?
Oh, great! DK is brilliant to work with. They have great creative talent and we have a phenomenal director Mandar Devasthali for the show. It is a great team.

You are playing the role of a doctor again. Do you feel yourself being repeated?
Yes and I was initially worried and concerned about the role as I did not want the audience to compare. But simultaneously the concept itself is different wherein Sanjeevani was about a hospital and Kuch To Log Kahenge is about two individuals.

How would you differentiate your character in this show from Dr. Shashank Gupta of Dill Mill Gayye?
Shashank Gupta was a straight forward person wherein he had no complexes and no psychological concerns. Dr. Ashutosh is an orphan and emotionally destitute. He is personally obsessive about his relations unlike Dr. Shashank.

How do you manage television and Bollywood simultaneously?
As I said earlier I do not do that much of television and I have to dedicate my half a month for the show. Cinema needs its own pace. If you have the will to work you will carry both well.

In the context of television what is the one thing that makes you say 'yes' for a show?
Script absolutely and the role also. If my role has something pivotal to offer in the show then I will definitely do it. Unfortunately in television scripts change after a period of time on demand of the TRPs.

Out of all the characters you have portrayed on television which really did not connect to you?
There was one character that I played in a show on Sahara One. The script was written poorly and later on the show itself was called off. Sometimes certain decisions go wrong and it is a digital world and there are many obligations.

Do you think after Bade Acche Laggte Hai, middle age love stories have gained popularity in television?
Apart from Bade Acche Laggte Hai, I do not think there are any shows that concentrate on middle age love stories because in here unlike Bade Achche, the girl is very young. And I do not think Ram's character in the show is as old as mine. Also in Bade Acche the couple gets married and then love is grown whereas in Kuch Toh love is first grown.

How do you find television today?
Television has grown tremendously in the last ten years and I do not like it. Earlier we had shows that were weekly and though we had to compromise on scripts when compared to films, there was creativity in it. We could sit, discuss and question on the creative decisions which we do not have the time for.

Is there any show on television that you watch regularly?
No, because I do not get much time for that.

You have also tried your hands on hosting, what do you enjoy more?
Yes, I did two shows, Bachke Rehna on Sony TV and Star Vivaah for Star Plus, and I like hosting. If I have to choose one, then I would say acting because there are so many characters to portray. There are a lot of limitations in hosting and we have to create fictitious time and emotions.

Would you like to say something to your India-Forums fans?
Oh my daughter follows our show on India-Forums and she keeps a count on what her dad is doing (laughs). She says the forum writes well about you and the show unlike earlier.
