Effect of accidents in TV serials

Accidents, plastic surgery, amnesia and Coma are the major Twists and turns in the serials. But interestingly (or uninterestingly), the same plot is used in almost all serials!

Does it happen to you..after having lost track of a particular story/serial, when you go back to watching the serial, you're shocked/surprised to see that the main protagonist has changed faces? Or, when a character is going through the 'I-don't-remember-anything' phase, have you wished, you too would have a memory lapse about the serial? If yes, then Welcome to the World of Daily Soaps!

All Daily soaps try to entertain viewers with different tracks and storylines. In order to create sensation amongst viewers, every show normally has new and unexpected twists in the story that leave the audiences' spell bound. Writers & directors, in their quest to show something 'different', many a times, entertain viewers with certain unreal moments! Like, after a particular character is shown 'dead', they suddenly come alive, but with a new face! Some meet with an accident, go into coma and loose their memory, unable to recognize their own family. These are certain twists that occur in almost all the serials.

Remember Sujal, the very famous character of 'Kahiin Toh Hoga'? The character was played by the then lead actor, Rajeev Khandelwal. Suddenly, viewers found Sujal dead in an accident. Later, he returned from out of the blue, but this time it was not Rajeev, but Gurpreet who played the role. Whats surprising is that, not only did the face change, but his voice, body structure, height and even the colour of his eyes changed! Before Sujal, a similar situation occurred in 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'. Who can forget the character of Mandira which was initially played by Mandira Bedi. As soon as she left the show, Achint Kaur took over. Which means, a short Mandira Bedi turned into a tall Achint Kaur and Mandira’s sweet voice turned into the rough and tough voice of Achint! What were the casting directors thinking?!

Well, this is not the end to the list of plastic surgery’s in serials. Television has witnessed several such examples. Ram Kapoor">Ram Kapoor who played the role of Rahul in 'Ghar Ek Mandir' was also a victim of plastic surgery and here, a healthy Ram Kapoor">Ram Kapoor transformed into a slim Ashish Kapoor">Ashish Kapoor! In 'Kutumb', the antagonist took advantage of the death of the protagonist Gauri, and Amita got transformed to Gauri Pradhan! Recently, the same happened with the character of Anurag Basu in 'Kasautii Zindagi Kii'. The role was earlier played by the handsome Cezanne Khan and is now played by Hiten Tejwani. The list is endless.. The question that arises is – how can the voice, body structure and also the height change, when a plastic surgery is performed on the face?! In serials, post-plastic surgery, not just the face..but body type, voice & everything changes! Is it due to the fact that doctors in serials have had an over-dose of plastic surgeries, as they have to perform this operation on every other character in almost every other serial? Kudos to these doctors!! Wondering where all this started? Just rewind your memory and you will recall the character of Jyothi, played by Rekha in the film 'Khoon Bhari Maang'. In the film, Rekha remained Rekha, before & after plastic surgery..with just a few changes to her face structure. But serials have taken things 10 steps ahead!

Accidents in serials not only account for plastic surgery, but memory loss as well. Usually the character is shown dead, and suddenly found alive somewhere, living with a different family..which creates more twists and turns in the story line. It all started with the 'death' of Mihir of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Mihir's death caused nationwide hysteria amongst fans who demanded the return of Mihir. What followed was memory loss of Mihir, wherein he started living life as Amar with his doctor, Mandira who gave him his new life. And thereon, the saga continued... Kumkum of 'Kumkum-Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan', also had to go through this 'memory loss' phase, after she met with an accident. Pari of 'Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki', Addy of 'Parivaar', Om of 'Kahanii Ghar Ghar Kii' are few of the victims of amnesia. The list is really endless. There is also a variation to memory loss. Sagar of 'Banoo Main Teri Dulhan' and Abhay of 'Kkusum' started living the life of a kid. All they remembered was what they were when they were a child. Interesting part is, that all these characters regain their memory and that too, either from the same place or replicating the incident which caused their memory loss.

Question is - Are these the only ways & means to carry a story forward? Maybe directors and writers cannot be entirely blamed, as when a serial runs for six to seven years, one really runs short of ideas. Plus, over the years, we've known and have reason to believe, that story may not always be the reason for such twists & turns in serials. There are many other factors involved.. like some 'behind-the-scenes' reasons for a certain twist in a show!

1) Plastic Surgery - Actor/actress is getting replaced (for whatever reasons)!
2) Coma/Illness/Away on a Business Trip - Actor/actress' unavailability of dates due to other commitments!
3) Memory Loss - Actor/actress is fed up of playing the same role over the years and needs variety!

Well, these are just some of the reasons..there could be many more! But whatever the reason, its high time writers, producers, directors begin to think of new plots for serials instead of the same old stories/tracks followed in all serials. Coz audience ka 'dil maange more'! Or are we asking for too much?! You decide!

    Kahani Ghar Ghar ki

Although this isn't plastic surgery, I found the Janki devi track very comical in a way. No DNA test to prove she is Parvati? Fingerprints were done, yes, but what about everything else? And where was the police in the whole thing? They didn't question her? It just seems unrealistic...interesting but unrealistic.

The worse of Sujal was that when the new Sujal came after the plastic surgery, even the colours of his eyes got changed. =))

The Channel houses can go through our Fan Fiction section. They can get many new ides for stories.

one thing more to be discussed is that the death father and alive son have same faces, as they did in kyunki with ansh and eklavya......

and changing of characterz is just a miserable thing........finally we get used of a character and they changed it in no time as Sharman of KUMKUM got changed 2 times in a month......

the one thing that skicks me the most is how do they know that to whom they are talking in hospital is called as doctor or nurse........i mean they remember the fact that in hospital, there is a doc or nurse and stuff like that

yadhashat jati hai, apna naam tak bhool jata hai likin doctor or nurse word yaad reh jata hai

    funny soaps
