Dussehra or Vijayadashami – the festival is celebrated throughout the country and the underlying tradition and mode of celebration vary vastly by region. However, all festivities celebrate the victory of the forces of Good over Evil. While in the East, people have the traditional Durga Puja, up north people commemorate the victory of Lord Rama over the demon Ravana. The day is considered as an auspicious day to begin new ventures in life.

In memory of Lord Rama’s victory, people burn Ravana effigies, where in huge melas or fetes are organized. The Ramlila - an abridged dramatization of the Ramayana - is enacted with much public fervor.
