India needs science communicators: M.S. Swaminathan

Kolkata, Jan 7 (IANS) India needs science communicators to bridge the growing gap between science and society on important discoveries, eminent agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan said here Monday.

Kolkata, Jan 7 (IANS) India needs science communicators to bridge the growing gap between science and society on important discoveries, eminent agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan said here Monday.

"We need a new breed of science communicators who can help to bridge the growing perception gap in relation to bio-safety and nuclear power. The science of science communication needs greater attention, particularly with reference to nuclear power and genetically modified foods," said Swaminathanat at the valedictory function of the 100th Indian Science Congress.

He suggested that Indian universities should help in developing science communicators who can explain to the general public in languages the significance of important scientific discoveries.

"We need a cadre of science communicators possessing both proficiency in science and mastery of communication," said Swaminathan.

He said the streams of biodiversity, biotechnology, nuclear technology and nanotechnology need priority attention in efforts to bridge the scientist-society perception gap.

"As frontier science progresses more and more of issues of public concern will grow. Nanotechnology will also create fears and apprehensions. The role of scientists in the area of public education and information will increase," pointed out Swaminathan.
