New Delhi, Sep 12 (IANS) Three Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) Tuesday joined hands with IT training major NIIT to offer six short-term courses in virtual classrooms to executives.

IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Calcutta and IIM-Indore will impart short-term diploma courses ranging from four months to one-year.

'The courses will begin by October end,' IIM-A director Bakul H. Dholakia told reporters here.

'The need for management education is enormous in India, but given the infrastructural constraints we are now resorting to broadband to fill the void,' Dholakia said.

IIM professors will take classes in a studio that will be interlinked with NIIT studios in six cities. The classes will be held every Saturday for nearly eight hours.

'The technology will enable us to interact with students,' he said.

To facilitate the programmes, NIIT Tuesday launched a new institute called NIIT-Imperia and inaugurated at studio at IIM-Indore.

'The day marks NIIT's entry into management education and we are overwhelmed to be associated with IIMs. This is a unique example of public partnership,' said Rajendra S. Pawar, chairman of NIIT.

In the first year NIIT will open in six cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata. In the next five years they plan to open 75 centres.

Highlighting the demand for executive management education in India, IIM-Calcutta director Shekhar Chaudhary said: 'The growth trajectory of the country's economy and the talent shortage makes it imperative to broaden the talent pool and the current initiative will help us to reach the masses.'

On the occasion, S.P. Parashar, director of IIM-Indore inaugurated the first broadband studio for giving lectures.

'We hope the quality content of IIMs and the technological expertise of NIIT will make the endeavour a success,' said Parashar.

Candidates will be selected through a joint entrance test.

'There will be no compromise on quality of candidates. While content, evaluation, grading and certification will be under IIMs, NIIT will provide technological and marketing collaboration,' said Tapan K. Panda, professor, IIM-Indore.

IIM-Ahmedabad will offer two executive programmes - strategic business communication programme (four-month course) and accelerated general management programme (seven-month course).

IIM-C will host two programmes - senior management programme and executive programme in applied finances both of one year duration.

IIM-I will provide postgraduate certificate programme in management and postgraduate certificate programme in sales and management - both of one year duration.
