Congress core group meets amid gang-rape protests

New Delhi, Dec 29 (IANS) The Congress core group met Saturday evening to review the current political situation even as thousands of people gathered at Jantar Mantar to mourn the death of 23-year-old gang-rape victim.

New Delhi, Dec 29 (IANS) The Congress core group met Saturday evening to review the current political situation even as thousands of people gathered at Jantar Mantar to mourn the death of 23-year-old gang-rape victim.

The meeting, held at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's official residence here, was attended by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Defence Minister A.K. Antony, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel.

Gandhi had in the morning assured people that justice will be done in the matter.

The body of the woman, who succumbed to her injuries at a Singapore hospital, was to be flown home late Saturday night from Singapore, where she was being treated and where she died early Saturday.
