Kolkata, Dec 6 (IANS) A senior West Bengal legislator belonging to the CPI-M Thursday dialled President Pranab Mukherjee on behalf of the state lawmakers and appealed to him to uphold secularism - a salient feature of the Indian constitution.

"I called him up and told him as he is the guardian of the constitution, he should ensure upholding of secularism, a basic feature of our constitution," said Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator and former state minister Anisur Rahman.

Rahman said Mukherjee told him he would do his best to uphold secularism.

Thursday was the 20th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid.

The CPI-M-led Left Front observed the day as national integration, unity and communal harmony day across the state.
