Kolkata, Dec 2 (IANS) Social activist Medha Patkar was arrested along with seven of her associates at Singur in Hooghly district Saturday evening when she tried to enter a village to examine the situation arising out of police-farmer clash over fencing of land for Tata Motors car project.

The Narmada Bachao Andolan leader, who was intercepted on her way to Singur, about 40 km from here, managed to reach the area by dodging the police but was stopped when she tried to enter a village at Khaserbheri where women and children were allegedly tortured by policemen.

'I went to Singur because I heard that the administration is taking possession of land forcibly. I got messages from here and so I had to rush,' Medha said after her arrest.

'When I visited a village at Beraberi I found women crying. Police unleashed havoc in the village and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) cadres were there too. Women were molested and handled by men police,' Medha said.

'They arrested us without even telling us on what ground we were arrested. I was not there to incite people.'

Earlier, the police removed Medha pleading that her presence would incite people.

'Your gestures are inciting people. We have adequate lady cops,' a senior cop told Medha before her arrest.

Medha was accompanied by human rights activist Deepankar Chakraborty.

On Oct 27, Patkar had visited Singur and held a public hearing for the farmers facing eviction threat due to the Tata Motors project on nearly 1,000 acres of farmland.
