The response for our Best Actor 2004 poll was overwhelming, and the race was hotly contested. The results are now out. Read on to see if your selection made it to the top. Here are the five best actors of 2004, chosen by rediff.com readers worldwide. 5. Salman Khan The shirtless wonder strikes again. The year has really been a return to form for Sallu. The erratic rebel seems to have grown up, embracing relative sobriety, and speaking to the media with rare frankness.
This year he arrived with a bang at the box-office, his films succeeding despite a sea of opposing critics. Non-believers may scoff, but reviews don't a star break. Audiences just can't seem to get enough of Salman, and it shows. We saw a slew of unrelated films -- successful macho madness in Garv: Pride And Honour; a powerful performance in the saccharine Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha; frothy comedy in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi; and strong sensitivity in the AIDS movie, Phir Milenge.

Not to mention his ever-colourful love life, now hotting up with the stunning Katrina Kaif.

4. Ajay Devgan Consistently, this man has been solidifying his reputation as one of the industry's most capable actors, and has earned a rare respect -- universal across critics, directors and audiences. This year sees him further consolidate his screen credentials with his mixed bag of roles.

He was seen in Khakee, Yuva, Raincoat, Taarzan-The Wonder Car, but will probably be most applauded for Masti, where he subtly spoofed his own cop/tough guy image.

3. Hrithik Roshan Hrithik danced his way onto this list, to be fair. The year 2004 hasn't seen enough of him on the screen, his only appearance being in the somewhat critically appreciated, but box-office dud, Lakshya. While Farhan Akhtar's film may have been disappointingly lacking in several departments, it must be given credit for one thing, undeniably: it had a song where Hrithik danced incredibly well! Main aisa kyon hoon, choreographed by the seemingly spineless Prabhudeva, was a dance so unique and simply astounding that even Hrithik critics had to give the man his due.

Don't Miss!

2. Amitabh Bachchan In an industry where most people slow down with age, this legend seems to have wolved down some awfully powerful painkillers. The 62 year old made ten films in 2004, and one has to marvel at his gusto. It might have been a year largely of troughs for Bollywood's once-greatest star, but it did have its high moments. Audiences loved Amitabh's terrific Sikh cameo in Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara!

His other films this year include: Khakee, Aetbaar, Rudraksh, Insaaf: The Justice, Dev, Lakshya, Deewar, Kyun...! Ho Gaya Na, Hum Kaun Hai?, and Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo.

1. Shah Rukh Khan If there was ever any doubt to Shah Rukh's overwhelming dominance of the Hindi film industry, 2004 laid it forcefully to rest. From the cover of Time magazine's Asian edition to the year's most-successful releases, Khan has truly been King. The year saw the star do dramatically different things -- a very tongue-in-cheek spoof that changed the way desi cinemagoers would forever look at The Matrix; a lavish, epic romance that saw him playing an old man; a nationalistic film about returning to one's roots, where he gave a stunningly minimal performance; and a superhero film where he voiced a crusader past his prime.

SRK's 2004 releases included thudding hits -- his self-produced Main Hoon Na, Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara, Ashutosh Gowariker's Swades, and -- perhaps most importantly -- enduring popularity among kids of all ages for his magical work in Hum Hai Laajawab, The Incredibles in Hindi.

I think Saif's name should also have been in the list. He did really well in Hum Tum.
