Hey, thanks for all your comments. Please do suggest a name for this ff....I would appreciate it.
I don't know if all of you would agree with Jai's reasons, and maybe feel it is not justified, but I felt it would help Jai and Bani bond better. Bani needs something to fix, and who better that Jai to help her do that 😆.
Chapter 3
Jai stood in front of the mirror adjusting his tie. He glanced over at the phone, and as if on cue, it rang. He debated for a second whether to pick it up or not, and as always, decided to pick up.
Hello, he said gruffly. He then heard a click on the other end. He put the phone down. Every morning she called at the same time, he never understood why she did that. She never said a word, but he was sure it was her, he had a feeling.
He walked back to the mirror, pulled his tie out in frustation, and started to put it back on again. He didn't understand why he would pick it up everytime. He wanted to let it ring, but something always made him stop. But, he hated her didn't he?
His thoughts automatically travelled to his mother, her loving nature, her warm demeanor. He remebered her battling with cancer when he was 14. She had tried to be strong, and fought with it every step of the way, but the cancer had seemed stronger and finally she succumbed to her illness, but not before she saw his father with his new bride, Krishna, her own sister.
He had felt betrayed. He had loved her, she had been there everyday taking care of his mother. She had been a rock for him and helped look after his sister Anu, who was 13 years younger, when his moher was sick.
Uday had tried to explain to him that it was his mother's dying wish, but he wouldn't listen. He couldn't help feel that she was taking his mother's place, and that had been her intention all along. A part of him felt that his mother would have fought harder, would have tried more, and if it hadn't been for Krishna, his mother would have still been around.
He blinked his eyes to stop his tears from falling. Since then, he had withdrawn himself from her and his father. He became a recluse, and all he wanted to do was leave home. He couldn't stand the fact that she was a part of his mother's house, and now sharing his father's room.
All her ways to get closer to him only made him angrier, and then she slowly stopped approaching him. She never had any kids of her own, and in a small way he felt vindicated. But, the longer he stayed there, the more confused about his feelings he became.
She was a wonderful mother to Anu, and a dutiful and loving wife to his father. But, he failed to see that she was always the happiest whenever he succeded. He never saw her hiding in the background and watching his plays and games, and the pride and happiness that reflected on her face whenever he performed.
He left to Delhi, as soon as he graduated. He started working under someone, but within a few years, became a name to recon with. He started Ambika industries, named after his mother, which flourished under his promise.
He would come home occassionally because of Anu, but stayed away from Uday and Krishna. Krishna silently made sure he had his favorite dishes prepared. Uday often would try ro intervene and set Jai right, but would be stopped by the pleading eyes of his wife imploring him. She was always scared that Jai would walk out if faced with a confrontation and she would lose even these few moments with her son.
When Anu got married, he saw Krishna for the first time totally break down. It was at that moment he felt that maybe he had wronged her somehow. He felt uneasy at this realization, and immediately left for Delhi never to come back to the house again.
Since that day, everyday before he left to work he would get a phone call in the morning at exactly the same time.
He sat down on his chair staring out the window, now he had to go back. Anu was coming home the next week. She was pregnant.
