Normally during the winter ,lips go dry. The loss of moisture in lips
causes dryness in lips. The loss of natural moisture in lips may happen
due to exposure to sun & cold dry winds.
Deficiency of Vitamin B, iron and fatty acids can cause dry lips and cracking of lip corners. Take multivitamin supplement with the consultation of your physician. Eat foods high in calcium, magnesium and flax seed oil. These three ingredients are proven to aid in the healing of lip surfaces.
Dehydration can cause dryness of lips, drink plenty of water to hydrate your body. Increase your water intake during winter to keep your lips looking fresh. And also winter dryness can be dealt with humidifying the room.
Repeated licking of lips actually dries them out even more. Rest a wet warm flannel over your lips to soften up th skin. Remove after 30 seconds, apply a layer of petroleum jelly onto your lips leave into sink in for three to four minutes. Gently rub away the excess petroleum jelly once again using your warm flannel. This will also serve to peel away any loose skin. Apply lip balm to your lips, and don't lick them at all. Also, you can try to apply ghee.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol which are major tissue dehydrators.
Don't apply lip balm which contain phenol and camphor. Phenol is a mild
anesthetic and camphor adds a cooling , tingling sensation which in the
short term may bring temporary relief but could irritate already
sensitive lip tissues.
Before selecting a lipstick, do a patch test by applying various brands on your skin and seeing if there is any reaction. Never use old lipstick. Old lipstick feels sticky, and is not comfortable to wear. It also dries out the lips so avoid using old lipstick which has expired. If you still would like to use it, first apply another lipstick to your lips, and then the old one.
Dry, swollen, or cracked lips can also be caused by allergies, infections, drugs, and a number of medical problems. If the problem persist without improvement consult your physician.
