Drona to launch 'blockbuster-ing' attack on Dusshehra 2008?
Thursday, May 22, 2008 -

Abhishek Bachchan's magnum epic Drona has been decided to hit the Indian screens on October 2nd, 2008, the week of Eid and Dusshehra 2008 in India this year.

The makers were earlier trying to finish the film and zeroing in on August 15 as a possibility of release, as was the Akshay Kumar starrer Singh is King. However once Drona was said to have zeroed in on Aug 15, Singh is King moved out to Aug 8th. Yash Raj Films then decided to shift a Ranbir Kapoor film called Bachna Ae Haseeno to Aug 15th, which is to be Kapoor's 2nd film after the dismal box office showing of the much hyped Saawariya directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali last year.

However with August being only 3 months away, Drona's special effects work is not yet entirely complete and the SFX will be worked on tediously through end of May. The trailors therefore are said to be a month away.

As such the film is now scheduled to be coming on screens all over India on Dusshehra 2008 on October 2nd; which falls on Gandhi Jayanti holiday and lands right between Eid and Dusshehra this year (Eid is few days before, Dusshehra few days afterwards).

According to sources, the USPs of Drona include some world class special effects, a standard not seen in Indian films to date. And the makers don't want to compromise on them at this point.

Asked if the movie was being dalyed due to Yash Raj's Bachna Ae Haseeno, says a source dismissively, "That's comical. Yash Raj post-Tashan and Ranbir Kapoor post-Sawariya would hardly be competition for Drona at any level. Even Yash Raj-SRK film couldn't take on Drona in India. Drona would have wiped out Bachna Ae Haseeno or just about any film this year were it to clash with it. You will see what the difference in the box office openings is when all these movies have released for yourself. Drona is a superb film and Abhishek Bachchan is fantastic in it. Other films may go onto be hits or flops, but Drona is a sureshot blockbuster this year."

Fitting Into His Genes

First, a sleeper debut. Now, false hype over an imminent marriage. Is Ranbir Kapoor worthy of his name? MADHU JAIN assesses the scion

WHEN HRITHIK Roshan streaked across the screen like a meteor in his debut film, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, the women of this nation swooned. So did the men. Whistles were unleashed when he danced shirtless. A star, as the clich goes, was born. Something similar happened when Ranbir Kapoor did his towel-tease number in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's operatic Saawariyaa (he confessed in an interview that the shot had taken 16 takes and no, he wasn't wearing anything under the towel).

The film flopped but Raj Kapoor's grandson and Rishi Kapoor's son (and while we are at it, Prithvi Raj Kapoor's greatgrandson) snatched victory out of the jaws of box-office defeat.

Unlike cousins Karishma and Kareena, Ranbir hit the ground running. He won most of the awards for best new actor and long before the mahurat of his second film (Yash Raj production Bachna Ae Haseeno) a starry halo had begun to hover around his head.

Perhaps being a blue chip Kapoor was responsible for Ranbir's ascent. He was a cover boy and his leading ladies were all Alist actresses like Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and current amour Deepika Padukone. Directors from the less tinselly side of Bollywood are also seriously considering him: Prakash Jha wants Ranbir to play Rajiv Gandhi in his forthcoming film, Rajniti.

When I met Ranbir three years ago, he came across as a mama's boy, and it wasn't just because of his resemblance to mother Neetu Singh. His long bangs lent him a drowsy, wet-behind-the-ears look but he spoke with an engaging frankness of growing up with his father's violent outbursts.

Despite the apparent diffidence, his quiet determination was evident. He wanted to direct films: he had made half a dozen short films while studying filmmaking in New York. He'd also attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute to learn method acting, but once he returned, he was shrewd enough to abandon it and do a crash course in the Kapoor school of filmmaking — watching old Raj Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor films on DVD.

Saawariyaa's pining hero has shades of Raj Kapoor's sad clown persona. More metrosexual than macho, Ranbir is tailormade for romantic roles like his father. He is also a good dancer and can throw himself about the floor with great-uncle Shammi Kapoor's energy

When I met Ranbir again this winter, the awkwardness was gone but there was none of cousin Kareena's swagger from her early foot-in-mouth days (her father Randhir Kapoor has said that she was like a bomb waiting to go off). Karishma had been reticent, guided by her mother, Babita, through her career. Ranbir appears to stand somewhere between the two. He knows his mind but consults his parents. "My father reminds me that acting is not in your genes. And he definitely has an opinion about my choice of films, but he leaves it to me to decide."

Mama's lessons were more about being a gentleman: "All I am is because of her." Perhaps it is the maternal gene that sets him apart from the new breed of macho actors. He belongs to an era when love was less about obsession and more about sacrifice. He says, "I am an old soul. I'd love to have been born in the time of Guru Dutt, Bimal Roy, Mehboob Khan and Raj Kapoor."

The Kapoor mantle was, in the past, a cross. Raj Kapoor struggled to find an identity different from his father's. Shammi Kapoor took five years to confect a persona different from his big brother's and Raj Kapoor's three sons took a long time, coming out of the shadow of their illustrious father. However, GenNow has no such problem: Kareena and Ranbir are only too willing to grab their grandfather's mantle and reclaim their legacy.

Jain is the author of The Kapoors: The First Family of Indian Cinema, forthcoming in paperback

'I've actually and truly fallen in love'

24 May 2008

THE MEDIA doesn't seem to tire of linking Deepika Padukone with her co-stars and cricketers and then speculating a break-up. The latest buzz around the actress is stranger than before.

While one section of the media is speculating that Deepika and Ranbir Kapoor are heading for a split, the other section is saying that the couple is engaged to be married.

Deepika became the 'it' girl after the success of her debut film Om Shanti Om but soon had to come to terms with the fact that being famous comes with a huge price. Her sudden rise to fame made her the new face for media speculation and gossip. After a string of link ups the actress came out loud and clear about boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor but that did not stop the media from speculating further.

Deepika for the first time got back at the media by clearing the facts about her past link-ups and present relationship with Ranbir Kapoor.

Media version of Mahendra Singh Dhoni-Deepika

Dhoni was linked with Deepika after he answered one simple question. The cricketer was quizzed about his favourite actress and viola Deepika Padukone were the words coming out of his mouth. This sparked a rumour of a full fledged relationship between the two.

Deepika's version

Deepika stated, "Absolutely nothing transpired between Dhoni and me. The media totally jumped the gun. Next thing I found myself in a full fledged relationship with the man. I found this episode completely bizarre."

Media's story of Yuvraj Singh-Deepika

Deepika had met Yuvraj a couple of times and were in the process of getting to know each other.

This sparked off rumours that the duo were seeing each other and then Yuvraj's mother too came into the picture. There was even speculation that two were engaged.

Deepika's version

"Yuvraj and I met a couple of times and were in the process of getting to know each other better when the media jumped to crazy conclusions. We were supposed to have got engaged and were all set to get married! Even wedding dates were printed. It was ridiculously insane," she said.

Deepika and Ranbir Kapoor

Deepika who is head over heals in love with Ranbir was elated when she finally made her relationship official to the public.

Deepika said, "This is the first time I've actually and truly fallen in love. Being in love is the loveliest feeling. When two people are getting close they need time to understand one another."

The paparazzi could not keep mum about the relationship and began that Ranbir's family had given a nod to their relationship when Ranbir's mother Neetu and Deepika were seen smling together at the Lakme Fashion Week.

The next gossip was the raunchy pictures of her with actor Upen Patel, aired on television which had deeply upset Ranbir. Not so, said Deepika, "Ranbir has already seen my portfolio and that was a shoot for designer Wendell Rodricks two years back when I was modeling. I am not ashamed of it."

The star said the couple had learned not to allow such talk to affect them: "It's ridiculous and now it has stopped affecting us also. We will decide how to conduct our relationship and nobody has a right to take us for granted and write any rubbish about us."

The fresh story about the two love birds was Ranbir would be leaving Deepika because they were not able to meet each other because of hectic schedules and the next one immediately was the couple got engaged and would marry in the next five years.

The couple rubbished both the rumours and the lovely lady revealed what Ranbir had brought into her life. She said, "(He has brought) A lot of happiness and stability. I trust him completely. I can discuss anything with him. I've found a great companion in him. He is truly the happiness of my life!"

Deepika is annoyed with the Press for publishing stories about her romantic link-ups, saying they will dent her reputation and cause future embarrassment. "The media needs to be a little restrained. I am a simple girl and from a respectable family. And loose talk about me harms my reputation. One day, like any other girl, I intend to settle down and have children. How would those write-ups look at that time? I'm so glad I've found a man who comes from the same space and understands the pitfalls of sensational journalism," she said.
