thats cool tradition.. all of us needs a nick.. i had a nick name gattu.... which got carried too far now nobody knows it..... goes with the pic i found of you

I think it's silly to give nicknames to people.
I hate mine, luckily after getting married I don't hear it much . 
It is ok to give nicknames to food and other stuff. eg a brocolli can have ladoo as a nick name. and what's with name like pappu , I thought young toddlers use it to indicate bathroom emergency.

Maine bhi bahut dimagh lagaya to find the connection
In this part of the world, there's a tendency to take the first letter or syllable of a person's name and then add "oo" to it. For example Gauri would become "goo goo" and I would become "shoo shoo"

@ gattu have heard it, but imagining someone saying "Gattu ki agley mahiney shaadi hai" makes me lolss..
