Minnie you made excellent points too !! Clap I too felt geographically , the type of devastation in New Orleans played a big role- in comparison to Mumbai rains !!Though Bush admin definately didnot handle the situation well for such a powerfull nation .

   What are we debating on?
Of course disaster is disaster anywhere in the world & death is death & ache is ache !! We are not being happy that we recovered faster & our friendz are still suffering ! Yes,with geographical & financial differences it is probably not right to compare.......
But it's only that it feels nice to read abt our efficiency to 'fight back'-that's it !

As far as govt is concerned we know how corrupt are our politicians too ! & in Mumbai, during the 'acute' phase, it was more of ppl helping 'themselves' before govt could wake up.
Mumbai may be financial capital fo govt's treasure but 'A comman man' knows how difficult everyday life is even without any calamity....from working women to the slums living by the tracks to ppl in Dharavi...! most ppl 'exist' for bread n not 'live' but over the yrs they've learnt to fight with /for life! They don't lose spirit even during the worst conditions may it be floods  (God given)  or Riots (leaders given).
so many young girls stayed overnight at unknown places with unknown ppl in helpless conditions but hardly any eve teasing was noticed in 'a city otherwise full of crimes'. PPl faught with authority, if the tracks weren't repaired in 3 days.
This yr, even though every home has suffered physically, financially, emotionally Ganeshji has got as grand & as warm welcome in even in smallest of house as if nothing happened!  I mean somehow pace here makes everyone run & return to normalcy soon.
Yes many parts of India suffer from disasters as Minnie pointed abt Bhuvaneshwar;another eg. is  Kutchh....every yr it has something for reserve......but somehow ppl here are more tolerant & don't give up easily, neither they sit idle waiting for the aid. This is what makes difference & makes us proud of....!
Of course powerful hands do have to realise the importance of lives irrespective of their hand in the economy.....may it be any part of the world !! &  yes our friends there must be trying their best to recover,we understand their pain too, after all it is struggle to survive...............

As Blue said the article was circulated on the net & the title mustn't be to prove anything abt US or India  but proly only observation.  No offence.

You guys also have to realize that New Orleans is a city below sea level. It's not meant to be inhabited by people it's supposed to be a giant lake. Although the floods in Mumbai were much worse, and even then I read some articles about how the city of Mumbai should be better built to handle floods, any mass amount of water to hit New Orleans would have been a disaster. This was a disaster that people have been predicting for a LONG time...in a way it's a miracle the city lasted as long as it did. As for the killing and looting that went on in New Orleans...some of it was out of madness and the rest out of desperation. You have to realize that the poverty level in New Orleans is very high. A lot of these people are dependant on drugs and went on a craze when they didn't have access to them after several days. Other people looted simply for food and water, as a means to stay alive. I'm not trying to justify the madness in the Gulf, simply trying to point out that the situations in Mumbai and New Orleans were under very different circumstances.

i agree with u but if they were pedicting this for a long time, then y didnt ppl living in new orleans leave it b4 this happened?and it is a city below sea level but even if tht happned in India,it would recover faster!
