SRK - A man of questions

SRK - A man of questionsSRK - A man of questions

In the 80s, when quiz shows were not just for entertainment, Siddharth Basu made them popular with 'Quiz Time' on good old Doordarshan. Twenty years later, when viewers had been exposed to varied and frivolous options, Basu made the elite non-fiction format to win over mass appeal, as he roped in Amitabh Bachchan as host (the superstars first outing on the small screen) in the cult show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'.

While Shah Rukh Khan stepped into Bachchan's shoes last year with the third edition of KBC, Basu brings back the box-office king again on television, this time with a new quiz show 'Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hain' on Star Plus that goes on air this summer (the phone lines for participation will open from March 4).

''Its a big, fun, cheerful show for the whole family,'' asserts Basu. 'Kya Aap' is based on last years hugely successful 'Are You Smarter Than The Fifth Grader?' that has already been telecast in 50 countries the contestants will have Khan asking them questions, partly of primary school syllabi. ''Grown-ups will have to prove that they are smarter than a 10-year-old and win handsome amounts in doing so. But if they are not, they have to admit it before millions of viewers,'' he says.

Currently, Basu also has other quiz shows on air, like 'Bollywood Ka Boss on Filmy' (it tests the contestants general knowledge on Hindi cinema). But, with 'Kya Aap', the challenge is to make sure the show doesn't end up as a KBC look-alike.

''In content, tone, texture and presentation, it is distinct not only from KBC, but also from all other quiz and game shows,'' says Basu. When the stakes are high, the reach and impact need to be at their maximum. The best way to do that is to have a charismatic superstar as host.

Over the years, Basu has kept pace with changing times. Recently, he even ventured into daily soaps the much criticised genre that still happens to guarantee the best TRPs today-with 'Jiya Jale' on the newly launched 9X.

''Fiction is the most watched genre on television. We wanted to make a difference with a better quality of content and presentation. We hope to produce more good fiction shows in the coming year,'' he says. Despite reports of the show not doing well, Basu still chooses to hold on to his soap. '''Jiya Jale' has been the leading programme on the channel,'' he emphasises.

Recently, Basu's production house, Synergy Adlabs, even brought the popular international celebrity dance show 'Dancing With the Stars' to the country the Indian version 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' enjoyed huge viewership even during its second edition few months back. Though small screen is witnessing a deluge of reality shows at present, Basu still predicts a bright future for the genre. ''The proportion of reality shows on Indian television is quite small and within that there is far more variation, than, say, fiction shows,'' he says.

Soon, couch potatoes will be treated to some more. ''We have some very exciting shows in the pipeline, which will unfold at different points in the ensuing year,'' he adds.

Paanchvi Pass may earn Star TV Rs 150-cr ad revenue

Meera Mohanty

New Delhi, March 7 Star TV is expected to make an estimated Rs 150 crore from its new format show Kya aap Paanchvi Pass se Tez hain? The channel has already tied up Airtel as presenting sponsor, and LG, Cadbury, Pepsi and General Motors as associate sponsors for what is expected to be the biggest show this summer.

Star declined to comment on advertising revenue, but sources say 10 associate sponsors and Airtel alone would contribute about Rs 150 crore. Earnings are also expected from other integrations like homework question and from interactives. In scale and size, it won't fall short of KBC. "It's the number one format, hosted by the biggest superstar Shah Rukh Khan, and at Rs 5 crore, for the biggest prize money on Indian television," said Mr Kevin Vaz, EVP, Ad Sales.

The format which is running successfully across 50 countries currently will attract viewers and their family, said Mr Prashant Kumar, Managing Partner, Central Trading Group, Group M. "Having Shah Rukh Khan as host just adds strength to the format," he added. Very True

The channel, which is believed to have earned about Rs 6.5 crore from SMS and phone calls for KBC's last season, has also tied up non-exclusive arrangements with most telecom players tapping into a total subscriber base of 250 million for the show. Mr Viren Popli, Senior Vice-President, Star Interactive, is expecting to add another 20-odd million of Reliance' subscribers to that figure very soon. The 36-episode show being produced by Mr Sidhartha Basu's Synergy Adlabs Media premiers this April and is slotted for the weekends, or on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Shah Rukh or IPL, a tough choice for channel sponsors

Surajeet Das Gupta & Aminah Sheikh / New Delhi/Mumbai March 08, 2008

Star Plus has signed up telecom major Airtel as the presenting sponsor for the Shah Rukh Khan-anchored 'Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hai'. According to sources, the deal has been struck at Rs 40 crore.

The Airtel deal follows on the heels of its competitor Vodafone signing up as the presenting sponsor for the Indian Premier League on Sony TV.

This promises to be a clash of the telecom giants.

Kevin Vaz, head of marketing and sales at Star India, confirmed the Airtel sponsorship, but he refused to comment of the value of the deal.

"Our title sponsorship of the programme is in synergy with the ubiquity of our brand," said R Chandrasekhar, head, brand and media, at Bharti Airtel. "It promotes mass connect and provides exclusive participation opportunities for Airtel customers."

Panchvi Pass is the Indian version of the international quiz show, 'Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?', on which adults are put questions from textbooks of classes 1 to 5. The contestant has a chance to win a specific amount at every stage and the maximum prize is Rs 5 crore.

The show will screen on from April 18Dancing , coinciding with the launch of the Indian Premier League tournament of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)Confused

This has kicked off a battle of sponsorships between the broadcasters.

Star Plus is still looking out for around eight associate sponsors to shell out about Rs 9-10 crore. Similarly, Sony Entertainment Television (SET) having signed up Vodafone for Rs 25-30 crore, is hoping to get one more presenting sponsor and rope in six associate sponsors, who will pay Rs 18-20 crore each.

Which has left sponsors with a somewhat difficult choice to make.

"Advertisers will have to decide based on which show will have their core audience. It is a big opportunity for advertisers with two new media properties launching at the same time. There certainly will be redeployment of investments," Prasanth Kumar, national director, central trading group, Group M.

Panchvi Pass will air from 8 pm to 9 pm Clap on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, which will clash with the IPL telecast on SET MAX 8 pm onwards on weekendsWink . '

Media experts believe the show properties can co-exist. An industry source explained that the new format show will increase the contribution of the Hindi general entertainment channels to the overall television pie.

"Compelling content always increases the viewership base. Therefore, both properties are bound to attract serious advertiser interest," said Basabdatta Chowdhiri, CEO, Madison Media.

SRK in a Dilemma Over Paanchvi Paas...

...which he is trying his best to sort out.

His next quiz show on Star Plus, Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hai? will be aired April 18 onwards, coinciding with the launch of the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament wherein SRK owns the Kolkata franchise.

Time trouble:
It is reliably learnt that the actor is trying his best to postpone the telecast date of Paanchvi Pass as he can't postpone the IPL matches.

Says a source, "The IPL's 44-day cricket bonanza begins on April 18 and will have a total of 59 T20 matches.
His TV show begins on the same date and will be telecast 8 pm onwards on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, clashing with the IPL telecast on Max on weekends, 8 pm onwards. Shah Rukh is extremely worried about the timings."

Conflict of interest:
But that's not the only reason. The source adds, "Star Plus has signed up Airtel as the presenting sponsor for Paanchvi Pass while Airtel's competitor Vodafone has signed up as the presenting sponsor for the IPL on Sony. This has kicked off a battle of sponsorships between the broadcasters as SRK endorses Airtel.

Siddharth Basu of Synergy Communications, which is producing Paanchvi Pass, says, "The time and date of telecast of the show will be announced shortly."

Shah Rukh was unavailable for comment.
