Pakistan domestic season, 2007-08

Top players to feature in Pentagular Cup

The cream of the country's talent will take part in the Pentangular Cup, due to begin in cities around Pakistan, from February 10. For the first time in its 34-year-old history, only provincial teams will be competing for the prize, which includes Pakistan's four provinces as well as a team representing the Federal Areas.

Unusually for a domestic competition, the country's top players are taking part, a result of the board's policy to make it a tournament of the top 75 performers from the Quaid-e-Azam trophy. Additionally, 25 of the most promising young players from around the country have been called up to the squads.

Shoaib Malik, Pakistan's captain, will lead Punjab, Shahid Afridi is Sindh's captain, while Younis Khan leads the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). Shoaib Akhtar, who is playing in a bid to prove his fitness before Australia tour Pakistan, will lead the Federal Areas, which includes players from Islamabad and surrounding regions. Balochistan, historically Pakistan's weakest cricket province, will include guest players from around the country in a bid to strengthen the side and will be led by Naseem Khan.

The tournament has undergone a number of format changes, often including departments and not always restricted to - as the name suggests - five teams. This year's tournament, however, is a return to how the tournament was originally intended and is among the most financially rewarding: not only do the winners claim a Rs 1 million prize (approx US$16,000), each member of the playing XI will be paid Rs 25,000 (approx US$400) per match. Non-playing members of the squad will get Rs 10,000 (approx US$160). The tournament will also be televised on a local sports channel (GEO SUPER).

There will be a short break after the first round of matches as general elections will be held in the country on February 18, but the four-day matches resume from February 22. The tournament, which kicks off with Sindh taking on NWFP in Karachi and Punjab playing the Federal Areas in Lahore, will be played on a single-league basis. The tournament is originally the suggestion of former captain, Rashid Latif.

Squads:

Punjab: Shoaib Malik (capt), Mohammad Yousuf, Salman Butt, Mohammad Hafeez, Misbah-ul-Haq (vice-capt), Kamran Akmal (wk), Naved Latif, Adnan Raza, Ammar Mahmood, Junaid Zia, Wahab Riaz, Waqas Ahmad, Mansoor Amjad, Mohammad Khalil, Abdul Rehman, Mohammad Salman (wk), Aizaz Cheema, Kashif Raza, Nasir Jamshed, Azhar Ali, Mohammad Asif (will be included in the team after a fitness test).

Sindh and Punjab are the strongest teams..
this tournament is a very good idea...and performance of players will b vital for the squad selection against the Aussies!!
The best part is that our international stars are also going to play this tournament...!!There will b a healthy competition as these players are the current cream of Pak cricket!!! Tongue Clap
I am obviously supporting the Sindh team.. Embarrassed Geo Super is going to telecast these matches...so this is quite a high profile tournament!!! Tongue
All the players hav been selected perfectly on merit...kudos to the selectors for that!! Clap Clap There was quite a problem in PCB coz some high official wanted certain players to b selected eventhough their performances were not good enough! The good thing was that the selectors did not compromise with him...and selected the players on merit!!! Tongue Clap

nopes!!
SINDH bounced back strongly!!!Clap
Some outstanding cricket was seen in all the 4 days of the match....
the best thing was the pitch....which had something for every1!!It helped the fast bowlers (Sohail Khan(Sindh) took 4 wickets on the 1st day, Shakeel ur Rahman(NWFP) took 6 wickets on the 2nd day) ; it had something for the spinners too as Danish Kaneria took 5 wickets on the 4th day....and it had for the batsmen too...Younus,Khurram made centuries while Khalid Lattif and Fawad Alam scored fifties in the 2nd innings!!
309 was always a difficult score to chase but thanx to the opening partnership b/w Khurram and Khalid...they did not get out on the 4th day and made 130 runs then only, leaving only 179 more runs for the last day!! NWFP then again bounced back, took 3 quick wickets on only 3 runs...but then Fawad Alam took charge...he played a brilliant nock!!Clap
All in all, it was a team work that got victory for Sindh!!ClapClap

As for the Punjab vs Federal areas match...the pitch at Lahore is a graveyard!!!ConfusedDead Batsmen scored heaps of runs....there was nothing for the bowlers...consequently, the match ended in draw!!ConfusedOuchRaheel Majeed (FA) scored a century,Bazid Khan,Nasir Jamshed all made centuries...Salman Butt made 290 runs!!!!!!!

Match summaries and scorecards:

Pentangular Cup, 1st round, 4th day
Manzoor and Alam cap comeback win for Sind
Cricinfo staff
February 13, 2008

Sind 149 (Naumanullah 47, Shakeel-ur-Rehman 6-28) and 309 for 5 (Manzoor 118, Latif 72, Alam 51* ) beat North West Frontier Province203 (Shakeel-ur-Rehman 45, Sohail 4-65) and 254 (Younis 111, Kaneria 5-62, Ali 3-66) by five wickets

Khurram Manzoor's century and an unbeaten 51 from Fawad Alam steered Sind to a five-wicket win over North West Frontier Province in Karachi. It was a remarkable comeback win for the side led by Shahid Afridi;

NWFP led by 200 runs with seven second-innings wickets in hand going into the third day, before a collapse and a disciplined batting display from Sind saw them end up on the losing side.

The foundation of Sind's pursuit of 309 was laid by their openers Manzoor and Khalid Latif before stumps on day three. The two added an unbroken 130 runs, and took it to 161 before Latif was out leg-before to Mohammad Aslam. Manzoor and Naumanullah added another 62 runs, but Samiullah Khan dismissed them both in quick succession and Shakeel-ur-Rehman got rid of Faisal Iqbal as three wickets fell for the addition of three runs. Manzoor, the Man of the Match, scored a patient 118, with 18 fours and one six.

However, any hopes NWFP harboured quickly dissipated thanks to a blistering 31-ball 51 from Fawad Alam. Shahid Afridi made a brisk 29, but it was Alam who remained till the end as Sind sealed the win.

------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------

Federal Areas 383 (Majeed 107, Saeed 69, Ashraf 58) and 385 for 6 (Bazid 172, Saeed 65, Arafat 56*) drew with Punjab 599 for 7 dec (Butt 290, Jamshed 108, Yousuf 56, Azam 3-133)

Salman Butt's 290 set up the possibility of a win for Punjab, but a 172 from Bazid Khan led the battle as Federal Areas forced a draw.

Tottering at 37 for 3 at stumps on the third day, Bazid combined with Usman Saeed and ensured there were no early inroads made by the Punjab bowlers. They added 151 runs, before Mohammad Hafeez bowled Saeed for 65. It was Saeed's second fifty for the game. Naved Ashraf made a useful 39 and together with Bazid put Federal Areas in the lead.

Legspinner Mansoor Amjad struck with the wickets of Ashraf and Bazid, whose 172 included 22 fours and a six. However, healthy partnerships ensured Punjab's chances of victory were dwindled. Yasir Arafat and Sohail Tanvir stuck around till stumps as the match ended in a draw. Arafat made an unbeaten 56, while Tanvir made 21.
