Hi, I'm a student from seattle, wa. I'm here with my school and we were wondering how Ghandi is looked at today. Is he a forgotten hero or is he still strongly remembered and looked up to? Now that India is modernizing, which was against Ghandi's beleifs, how do the common people feel about it?

Thanks

He is in no way a forgotten hero. Everyone atleast in India remember him. As to whether people look up to him, I'll say everyone respects him for everything that he did. However, not everyone agrees with all his ideologies. Never did at his time and don't do even now. That's expected anyway, not all people will agree with everything. And you can include me in that category.

Now that India is modernizing, which was against Ghandi's beleifs, how do the common people feel about it?

Gandhi was against modernisation?? Who told you that?? Both Gandhi and Nehru had some socialist inclinations instead of market driven economy but I don't think Gandhi was against modernisation. He felt that India should be self sufficient. And since India has such a huge population, they felt machines shouldn't be brought to replace humans and create more unemployment. And even if macines are introduced, they wanted everything to be indegenously built. That India couldn't develop rapidly after independence can be attributed to this ideology, but more than Gandhi it should be the Congress party with their lazy corrupt leaders who should be blamed for not getting their priorities right with the changing time.

Thanks

Hi there, I'm from the northern end of the borderBig smile

Very nice postClap I'm also curious as to what people think of "Bapu" nowadays... Is he a forgotten book dusting on the top most shelf of the library... or do people still take a ladder up to that catalouge today? Sorry, I'm sounding so filmi... Munna Bhai ka bhootLOL But coming to that, I think that the film did leave some sort of an imprint on people... Everyone recognizes the man on the Rupee and I assume most know of his story... or at least the gist.

Cheers,
dc
