Gods, goddesses, saints, stars
Hrithik Roshan is one of the names being considered for the title role in Shyam Benegal's forthcoming Buddha. Mythological films have a timeless appeal in India. So who would fit what other roles in these epic tales?

"Amitabh Bachchan is the first name that comes to mind," says entertainment pro Chaitanya Hegde. "He'll fit Bheeshma perfectly. He's got that patriarchal, authoritative yet amiable look and will look fab in white outfit and white beard," he says.

Film buff Nisha Abdulla says she'd love to see Jiah Khan playing Mohini. On a serious note she adds, "Bhumika Chawla has that old world charm that could see her portray a Mother Goddess kind of role."
In Kannada it would be difficult to think beyond Dr Rajkumar, states director Kavitha Lankesh. She adds that she would love to see Ajay Devgan playing Lord Krishna. "We have to move away from the fair and lovely images of actors," she says.

Chaitanya adds a few more mainstream Bollywood names to the list. "My perception of Lord Krishna is that of a management guru with a corporate bent of mind and Shah Rukh Khan would be ideal. A principled, sincere, righteous Yudhishtir could be a role for Aamir Khan." Kavitha, meanwhile, says, "Aamir is more Tipu Sultan or even Lord Rama material."

Alvin Mathew, creative director at an ad agency, believes that our imagination is lost once an actor plays a mythological or historical figure. "Even though we have original pictures of Gandhi, it's now visions of Ben Kingsley that come to mind. For any actor doing a Gandhi, Kingsley becomes the point of reference and comparison. Post Passion of the Christ, my imagination takes me no further than Jim Caviezel when I think of Christ," he says.

Ad filmmaker M G Satya is also not impressed by any leading hero or heroine portraying a mythological character. "Unless an actor has created a niche for himself of doing such roles, like Dr Rajkumar, it would be meaningless casting him. An Amitabh Bachchan will play an Ekalavya today, a Sarkar tomorrow. Even if he does a mythological character, it would be difficult to associate such a role with him. I'd prefer to cast a new face or train an actor from theatre," he says.

Kavitha begs to differ: "However much I'd like to try out a new face, I know the producer will not want to take those risks. I believe a good actor can do justice to any role he or she is given."

Amitabh Bachchan starrer to be shot in Kullu Manali
19th Jan 2008  14.01 IST
By Agencies

Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan 's upcoming project will be shot in the picturesque Kullu Manali district of Himachal Pradesh later this month.

Bachchan is likely to arrive in January end/early February, and stay at the Holiday Inn, Prini, Manali. The remaining cast members, including Dia Mirza will stay at the River Country Resort.

The local coordinator, Anil Kayastha, has been asked to earmark the important shooting locations for the film's Himachal shooting stint in Manali, which will later shift to the capital, Shimla.

The whole hill station is agog with excitement over the news of the megastar's arrival. Even the tourists are enquiring about the details.

The locals recall that the last time Bachchan was in Manali was around four years back for Anil Sharma 's multi-starrer, Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo .

Shimla's Willow Banks ready for Big B, Diya and Sarika!
We have been giving you exclusive inputs about Amitabh Bachchan's corporate project, featuring the megastar himself, Diya Mirza and now Sarika (instead of Dimple, as believed earlier). The project that was to be initially shot in the Valley of Gods, Kullu-Manali and later at the Himachal capital Shimla, is likely to see a role reversal, mainly due to the continuous snowing and inclement weather in Kullu and the neighbouring Lahaul-Spiti district.

As per our Himachal based sources, Amitabh Bachchan and Diya Mirza are due to arrive in Shimla later this week. In fact, Shimla's historic Hotel Willow Banks (originally owned by Arthur James Cradook- 'Architect and Builder of Shimla')has already been spruced up to welcome the megastar. An old heritage building near the hotel has been converted into a bakery and the necessary renovations were completed on Saturday itself. Why a bakery, one may ask? It is because Amitabh essays the role of a senior local resident who works at a bakery. As per reports, Diya Mirza plays atourist, who is on a vacation to the hill station, along with a group of friends and is to be a regular visitor at the bakery. Incidentally, Amitabh Bachchan's last visit to Shimla was four years back for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's BLACK, and on that occasion he had stayed at Woodville Palace Hotel.

Looks like a very interesting plot in the offing. Keep tuned to your favourite portal for regular inputs on the much awaited project. We say this to our
patrons and also to those who have been unabashedly copying our story, under the garb of 'agencies'!

Rekha shows Amitabh that she is married
It is common knowledge that veteran actors Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha were having an affair during the late 70s, and it is also well known that Rekha has, till this day, not married. So why did she attend a recent event with sindoor on her forehead? Was it because her former lover Amitabh Bachchan was also present?

It has been 27 years since the two have appeared together on the big screen, and both have gone to extreme lengths to avoid each other at events and shows. But, the two were seen at the same event this past Saturday… the wedding of Pt Sharma's son Rahul.

Rekha came in first, wearing a beautiful saree and the Hindu marriage sign of the sindoor. And then Amitabh Bachchan and his daughter-in-law arrived. Both gave their blessings to the newlyweds, but refrained from talking to each other or making eye contact.

Now what we are mesmerized about is why did Rekha wear the sindoor at an event where her former lover was present? Could she be hinting at something… has Rekha secretly got married with someone? Or did she indeed get married with Amitabh Bachchan in the 70s and still regards herself as his wife?

Big B plays good Samaritan

Big B is a man with a big heart. In the seventies and eighties, the Angry Young Man fought for the poor and downtrodden in films like "Deewar", "Laawaris" and "Amar, Akbar Anthony". Now, the aging Superstar of Bollywood is playing the role of a good Samaritan in real life.

Moved by the plight of Rimjhim and Anjali, the two little girls whose parents left them in a school in Patna and "escaped", Big B has reportedly decided to bear the cost of their education.

The girls' father Ashok Pandey is a petty businessman. He was facing some charges and was jailed in 1984. By the time he came out of jail, his business had collapsed and he, along with his family, was literally on the streets. Unable to take care of his girls, Ashok and his wife Shikha came to Patna and enrolled the girls at Shanti Niketan, a residential school on Jagat Narayan Road in Patna. Ashok is a native of Muzaffarpur.

When the girls' parents did not turn up to deposit fees at the school, the school management started searching for them. After months of search, they were finally contacted.

Shikha arrived at the school on Thursday to meet her daughters. She said they were living in abject poverty, so they had decided to "abandon" their children.

When Bachchan heard about the plight of the girls, he announced that he will bear the cost of their education.
Despite repeated attempts, megastar Amitabh Bachchan could not be contacted. The staff at his Mumbai office told TOI over phone, "Amitji is not present at his residence."

Bachchan's close friend and Samajwadi Party MP Amar Singh was also not available for his comments. Singh's Delhi office staff told TOI over phone on Friday evening that he is out of station.

Singh, however, told an electronic media channel early on Friday that Bachchan will bear the cost of the girls' education.

Chords & Notes

The Big B Unleashed Shemaroo, Rs.349 (DVDs) In Majboor (1974), Amitabh Bachchan makes a casual remark to Parveen Babi over a meal in a restaurant that a few decades down the line, in his old age, he would be living a life of quiet and oblivion. He was 32 then. Now, at the ag e of 67, he stills lords over the film industry, more often than not as the protagonist, playing roles written specifically with him in mind.

Rewind to the 1970s, a time when the shahenshah of Bollywood played the angry young man to phenomenal perfection and earned himself laurels from far and wide. As a role that whetted the dramatic fancy of India's excitable audiences with its overstated machismo and ruggedness, it was tailor-made for celluloid conquest. And soon enough, the man with his lanky looks and baritone (it is actually difficult to brand him a handsome hero) became the superstar and came to be recognised as the one-man industry. This 3-DVD collection of some action-packed scenes and songs from his films traces his rise, fall and, importantly, his magical – and sometimes seemingly inexplicable – resurrection.

As the green leather-jacketed Anthony or the chic Great Gambler, Bachchan's rough ride was smooth, punctuated now and then by comic relief. This compilation has action sequences (Satte Pe Satta), some light comedy (Chupke Chupke) and romance (Ek Nazar). Sure there are some sensitive flashbacks, like from Alaap, and Anand, but one misses many of his commendable performances, among them in Kabhie Kabhie, Coolie, Abhimaan, and most notably Sholay to mention a few. Instead, one is made to watch almost a fourth of Amar Akbar Anthony broken up into seven longish scenes (it does seem Shemaroo is overly concerned about the secular atmosphere in the country). There are also some glimpses from the more recent films, Baghban, Family and Hum Kisise Kum Nahin.

So much for the 'electrifying' scenes packed in all of two DVDs. The third one has some 26 'super-hit' songs from his films ranging from 'My name is Anthony Gonsalves', 'Anhonee Ko Honee Kar De' (Amar Akbar Anthony), 'Patta Patta Boota Boota' (Ek Nazar), 'Meri Makhna', 'Main Yahan Tum Wahan' (Baghban), 'Aadmi Jo Kehta Hai' (Majboor), to name some. Here again there is an overdose of Amar Akbar Anthony, but why? Here again you miss out on pretty songs from some of his better known films like Abhiman, Kabhi Kabhie and Sharaabi, etc. The song selection has been pretty poor and to call them all superhits would be a real misnomer.

All in all an entertaining retrospective, albeit incomplete and lop-sided.

I'm ready to buy this!

A school in bahu's name
OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
Amitabh Bachchan

Lucknow, Jan. 22: Call it playing the perfect pa-in-law.

Superstar Amitabh Bachchan has decided to gift a girls' school to the people of Daulatpur and the buzz is he will name it after "hamari bahu" Aishwarya.

What exactly the name will be has yet to be worked out, but sources close to Bachchan quoted him as saying "it will bear Aishwarya's name".

The school, to be built on a 1.09-acre plot in Barabanki district, has revived whispers about the dispute the actor was involved in last year. But this plot — No. 711 — is different, though close to No. 702 that is now owned by the gram sabha.

The foundation-laying ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, at which Bachchan is expected to unveil a plaque carrying his name. Three former chief ministers — Farooq Abdullah, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Chandrababu Naidu — are likely to attend, apart from the star-studded Bachchan clan.

Although Bachchan baiters have been questioning his motive in building the school and even alleging "he wants to clear his conscience", a former Mulayam minister said the actor merely wanted to contribute his bit to increase literacy among girls.

The actor had floated such a suggestion even in the middle of the legal wrangle last year in which he has been cleared by Allahabad High Court.

"Why didn't Bachchan talk about the school before the dispute? It has come as an afterthought. But good sense, whenever it comes, is welcome," a Bahujan Samaj Party leader said.

"We would call it a school to clear his conscience."

A spokesperson in the Delhi office of Bachchan's wife Jaya confirmed the Barabanki inauguration on Sunday. He said the proposal for the school had been announced last year.

"Mr Bachchan does not need any counselling from anyone on his social commitments," Arvind Singh Gope, a Samajwadi member, said.

Samajwadi Party sources said the school was likely to be run by a trust and would provide free education to girls from underprivileged families.

Ash to do the salsa

The Bachchan bahu will give her first post marriage stage performance this Thursday, but Abhishek won't be there to cheer her on

She's been doing the rounds for music releases, weddings and odd events with pa-in-law Amitabh Bachchan lately but this one's going to be a solo-act for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

The former beauty queen will give her first stage performance since tying the knot this Thursday at the JW Marriott. But sadly, hubby Abhishek won't be around to see her live performance. Ash will be putting together a ten-minute salsa act to mark the launch a new range, of the beauty soaps she has been endorsing for some time now.

Confirms a source, "She has already been practicing for the last couple of days with choreographer Sandip Soparrkar."

However, Ash is a tad upset about Abhishek not being able to make it for the show. "Abhishek Bachchan is out fo town shooting for Dilli 6 and hence won;t be able to make it even for the music launch of Jodhaa-Akbar. She hoped he'd be around for this, but it looks pretty dicey," adds the source.

Aishwarya who will jive to Latin-American dance music, will most likely be dressed in a little black number for the dance. This is not the first time she is doing the tango —not very long ago, Ash and Abhishek performed a salsa number during her birthday bash on November 2.

We guess those memories are enough to keep her company this time around.
