1992: Willie Dixon (76) A producer, songwriter, bassist, and singer, he helped Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, and others find their most commercially successful voices. He was the foremost blues composers and performers. From his musical roots in the Mississippi Delta and Chicago, Dixon created a body of work that reflected the changing times in which he lived. His later songs kept pace with dynamic world issues (heart failure)

1978: Greg Herbert (30) US sax player, with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Pat Martino, Blood Sweat & Tears, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, and Chuck Israels' National Jazz Ensemble and others (died of an accidental drug overdose while on tour in Europe with Blood Sweat & Tears).
1980: Professor Longhair/Henry Roeland Byrd (61) US blues pianist, composer; Shuffling Hungarians/The 4 Long Hairs and many more alias's. His signature song, "Mardi Gras in New Orleans" is still the theme song of New Orleans Mardi Gras, which he recorded in 1949 (heart attack).
1982: Sam Lightnin Hopkins (70) a great blues guitarist, singer; His distinctive style often included playing, in effect, bass, rhythm, lead, percussion, and vocals, all at the same time. His musical phrasing would often include a long low note at the beginning, the rhythm played in the middle range, then the lead in the high range. By playing this quickly - with occasional slaps of the guitar - the effect of bass, rhythm, percussion and lead would be created. He influenced many guitarists including Jimi Hendrix ()
2002: Carlo Karges (50) German musician; guitar, keyboards, songwriter for among others Tomorrows Gift and Nena. He is co-author of the Nena hit 99 Luftballons (liver failure)
