Inspirations for movies come from the real life so they definitely are a mirror of the society. The reality of course is mixed with fantasy, which is the product of the creators' imagination. The 50's and 60's movies like Do Begha Zameen and Shri 420 captured the divide between the haves and have nots so beautifully.

The era of the angry young man, potrayed the rebellion of the youth against the system.
The light romantic movies of the 80's and 90's reflected the growing urbanism and consumerism.

Terrorism and the underworld have been captured nicely in movies like Satya, Dil Se, Maachis etc

Even the songs have been reflective of the music fads…Disco dancer in 80's and raag based songs in the older movies represented the musical tastes of the society..

The representation of humour has been a reflection of changing humour sensibilities…the Charlie Chaplain influence in Raj Kapoor movies right to the relaitively crass but mass appeal humour of David Dhavan
RDB is the most recent example of a movie which represents the frustration in the young society wrt the political system( that's one thing which hasn't changed over the years)
Obsession with cricket has led to many a movie being made on the topic…

And last but not the least movies reflect the latest fashion and style in the society…the designers who design for fashion shows and ramp are also designing for movies these days…

Films do reflect society to a large extent. However, the style and level of reflection changes as per the genre and intent of the movie. Some movies are reality based and portray society on an explicit realistic level. While other films may not always try to reflect reality, but their content will always reflect the social norms, ideas, beliefs or a collective society, as well as trends and fashions.

Our Indian movies tend to reflect values of collectivism, society and family. They reflect our dressing styles and cultural nuances. Films sometimes get accepted orrejected based on how well they reflect society. For example movies like Neal N Nikki, Buddha Mar Gaya were not successful because our society does not accept racy humor explicitly.

Nice points SarinaSmile

If that is the case then...in the coming years...all the textile industires will be closed,as there is no necessity of much production of cloth..at least for the heroines,anti-heroines and and all..WinkTongueLOL

10 sarees used in one movie against 150 small clothes differently designed (?) from shorther clothes...... which of this requires more clothes??? i m clueless about lengths, i dont use them naLOL

Yes films do reflect the society whether in fanstasy or surreal form it depends. Tally made a wonderful depiction of movies and eras. If we see over the years the stories reflect the contemporary settings in terms of communication, dressing styles, photography, music, decors etc . Even the storylines are based in today's times now the treatment can be shoddy or captivating. The participation of corporates in the film industry has also brought in fresh wave of ideas and stories which are can touch people across cultures.

Some films do , some films partially do and some films Dont .

Ghosla Ka gosla , Chak de , swades , lagaan ,HAHK ,company many old movies do depict the real society very well .

Films like devdas , hum dil de chuke , don , parinita etc depict society partially .

and some pics like

OSO , main hoon na , paheli , cheeni kum ,fanaa, hey baby etc dont depict society in any way .
