Hey guys, lately I've been writing a fanfiction for Adi and Metz of KGGK fame in the forum and I just thought to post here if people are interested. So here's my mini dedication to the dusky yet endearing jodi of Adi and Maithali. Please let me know what you all think. Hope I don't bore you. So far written seven parts, next coming soon!

"Haqeeqat" (Reality)

Part 1

The winds teasingly meandered through the silky open tresses as the owner sat unmoved... The perfectly khol-layered eyes searched the night's skies as if looking for an answer... But all they could gather was the glazed whole moon, which appeared to smile back sympathetically. There was not a single star; the air was crisp and clean. Somewhere in the near distance, bodies moved in sync to a rhythmic beat... Ab mujhe raat tumhara hi khayaal hai.. kya karoon pyar mein... deewano jaisa haal hai... She had heard that strangers met on such moonlit nights... never to be strangers again. What a fate she had attained, setting aside meeting the stranger... she had lost everything... the one whom she had claimed her own. Obliviously, a lost tear escaped her eye...

"Ajeeb baat hai na… kuch log daulat ke liye khud bechne ke liye tayar khare hain... aur kuch log anmol heeron ko yoon hi bhikherene mein maahir hain..." (Strange isn't it? Some people readily sell themselves for sake of wealth… and then there are some who disperse precious gems in such a professional manner…) Her gaze curiously shifted towards the owner of the familiarly masculine, husky voice. Her eyes were graced with a mischievous smile, as they looked from the handsome face towards his outstretched palm... upon which lay a clear drop, as pure as her heart. She felt the lump form in her throat and quickly looked away, wiping the estranged tears from her face... Turning back, she forced a smile. "Ahhdddi... Tum yahan?" she whispered in a choked voice. His gaze pierced her, as if unearthing the layers behind the eyes…

He just stared at her for an excruciating moment, and then as if by the flick of a switch, a laugh escaped his parted lips. Perhaps it wasn't even the laugh itself, but the tone of it… that chilled her to the bone. "Tumne kya samjha, wohe sade hue kele ka chihlka aya hai tumhe apni bahon mein lene?" (What did you think, that skin of a stale banana has come to sweep you into his arms?) A momentary anger raced in her veins but then a realization brought her fateful reality smack into her sorry face. He was right. Had she really expected Pranay? Letting out a defeated sigh, she once again allowed her eyes to graze the broad skies, while gently rubbing the length of her arms. She felt her companion pensively move forward from his relaxed posture, and put a clasped fist underneath his chin, whilst following her gaze.

Time lagged on for minutes uncounted and she suddenly felt an urge to hide herself… Run away from everything, everyone… and especially the man next to her. Strange it was, the odd sort of relationship they had come to share. She wasn't even sure if she could call it a "relationship" of any sorts. As far as she knew, friendship hadn't even fully bloomed between them. But in this moment, she suddenly felt really… vulnerable under his presence. He wasn't looking at her, but the mere knowledge of him being here… next to her… Goosebumps slid across her body. In a wave of uncertainty, her thoughts travelled back to her wretched fate and her vision blurred once more as she recalled Shruti joyously announcing Pranay and Mallishka's engagement.

Determined not to allow herself to weaken in his mocking company again, she got up in an urgent stride and turned to walk away… only to be stopped mid step. Her eyelids closed in a mixture of agony and anxiety as she felt his muscular hand take hold of her petite wrist. She dared not open her eyes as the sound of his footsteps traced to the area before her. "Ek baat boloon Maitali? Joh in aansoonon ke bhikharne ki wajah ho sakta hai… wohe kabhi inke layak nahin ho sakta…" (You know what Maithali? He who is the cause of these tears… will never be worth them…). Her heart suddenly seemed to calm as the warm skin of his palm wiped away the result of her misery flowing freely from her eyes. As she opened them apprehensively, she found her eyes challenged by the soothing chaos of another pair… It was as though time had elapsed in its entirety. Breaking away from her gaze, he abruptly let go of her hand and walked briskly towards the music… as though suddenly aware of the awkward situation he had unknowingly placed himself into… Ek ajnabee sa ehsaas dil ko sataye… shayad yahi toh pyar hai…

All of a sudden, her knees felt as though rubber… eventually giving way… as she fell as a heap onto the grass… Bringing her hands forth, she felt herself deeply inspect the intensely etched lines running across her palms.

"Uh… Pragati?…", his hand instinctively went to the back of his head as he approached her best friend. As she turned her attention towards him, he brought his arm back down… "Adi?" she asked surprised that he would have been interested in talking to her. He looked at her, the expression on her face questioning him. "Wohe… Mait… Maithali… Maithali kahan hai?" Her eyes squinted in curiosity. After a moment of inspection, she replied earnestly, "Uski tabeeyat kuch teekh nahin teeh… issi liye wohe ghar chali gayi…" (Her health wasn't all that great… Hence, she went home). His eyes widened slightly at the information. "Chali gayi?" (She's gone?). A smile formed on Pragati's lips as she threw the inevitable at him, "Haan… kyun kuch kaam tah kya?" (Yes… why did you have work with her?) He felt his head shake in the negative almost immediately, and he mumbled an uncertain response. "Nahin wohe… actually Janki ma'am ne mujhe kaha ke mujhe Maithali se milna hai… Koi college ke function ke baare mein…" (No… actually Janki ma'am asked me to meet Miathali in regards to some college function…) She arrested him in a quizzical inspection for a minute, before releasing him with a look of satisfaction… "I'll see you later then", he quickly blurted and turned to walk away…

Curses… Frusterated, he threw a fist against the steering and brought the same hand to his head… raking his fingers through the silky layers. Sighing deeply, he closed his eyes rolling his head back onto the headrest… searching for solace from the haunting image… Curses… It had been but three hours since he had seen her last and it suddenly felt like forever. Even underneath the supposed safety of closed eyes, the vivid illustration of those silken layers… the perfectly kohled eyes… the tempting lips curving mysteriously… It preoccupied him entirely… He'd be a damned lier to say that he had never thought of her before… In fact, ever since that day she had come over to apologize… He had felt guilty for barking at her. It roughed him thinking for a reason so… but none came. As days passed, he'd tried to avoid her as much as possible, but it seemed fate was not going to hear of it. In some form or another, she had shadowed him… And lately, it seemed as though the foreign feeling had intensified. As their most recent encounter in the Agarwal gardens flashed before him, a prevailing rage gripped him… Unknown to him, his knuckles turned white as his hold on the steering firmed. Admittedly, he had some strange and unwanted feelings for her… but he had never felt so angered… helpless… at the moment he had seen her tonight. And that too, for that loser Pranay? It seemed such a hopeless case, yet his mind seemed devoted… Curses… He wanted to escape her… her thoughts… Opening his eyes, he looked towards the little gadget sitting still on the passenger seat next to him. A moment passed… and suddenly he picked it up, punching in the numbers as though known forever… by heart… As he finished, the "M A I T H A I L L I" flashed boldly across the little screen…

Part 2

As the dial on his wrist continued in its inevitable course… and the monotonous drone of the ring blared from the other end of the gadget… tiny beads of perspiration appeared on the periphery of his face... Creases of shaded passion radiated from his expressions… Why wasn't she picking up dammit… At some point, the dull humming of the receiver seemed to fall short before the chaotic thunder of his heart pounding with reverberating force against his chest. Confusion fogged his mind… On the one hand his ears longed the soft melodic voice, yet on the other… he dreaded it. It was too much… He couldn't understand what he was going through… and just wished it would end… or surely… he would. "Riiiiiiiing…" The automated male voice weaved its way through his mixed thoughts, "We're sorry, the number you have dialled is currently unavai…" In the uncertain moment, the gadget became victim to his boiling emotions… as the humble sound of feeble metal and stubborn grounds clashing in the near distance pierced the air.

As he furiously rubbed his hand over his face, the air seemed to choke through him. Feeling suffocated, he loosened his tie… opening the first few buttons… to catch his breath. At some point, his eyes obliviously settled upon the reflection in the rear-view mirror. A male figure, with deep features stared back… Within the figure, his eyes searched for the care-free, nonchalant Vikram-Aditya Mehra… who brought the parties to life… stirred every girl's heart's chords… All in vain… The man had slightly unshaven stubble forming, while his hair was also somewhat ruffled. Momentarily shifting his gaze, he looked towards his outstretched palm… The deeply etched lines had always wondered him… and again he glanced at them uncertainly. Trailing his eyes back to the man… he now saw only… "Adi"… the name had suddenly taken upon a new aura as she took it upon those lips… He was a confused mess. Angerly averting his gaze from the reflection, his hands found the keys in the ignition…

The winds seemed to be on a rampage tonight… As she sat for minutes uncounted, her surroundings seemed to have numbed. What had life in store for her?  Above her, the leaves of the giant oak rattled in the subtly calming breeze now… At some point, the mixture of whistles and racing tires screamed out whilst a vehicle carrying rowdy individuals drove passed. A strange combination of sweet sorrow impinged on her heart as the image of Pranay smiling happily with Malishka by his side… Happiness at the thought of his smile was inevitable, and it seemed to somehow ease the pain… a little… Afterall, isn't sacrifice love's second name? As her imbalanced thoughts shifted through the various shades of the evening… they lingered upon her companion in Agarwal gardens… Adi… It was unexplainable… Ek baat boloon Maitali? Joh in aansoonon ke bhikharne ki wajah ho sakta hai… wohe kabhi inke layak nahin ho sakta… (You know what Maithali? He who is the cause of these tears… will never be worth them…)… the soft husky voice echoed relentlessly in her ears… Strange it was, again she thought of the uncertain "bond" they shared… and his words… they empowered her entirely now…

Her thoughts were interrupted rudely as her dupatta pulled away. Lifting her gaze, she met with three pairs of eyes… They looked upon her with impish grins… one of which held the soft green of her veil… Bending before her, he wrapped the material around his hand… "Hum bewafa… hargiz na the…" (I was not… unfaithful at all…). She turned her head in disgust as the breath reeked of alcohol… The carefree laughter of the stranger bellowed through the night's air… Her heart screamed in agony as he lifted a finger, trailing it leisurely down the side of her face… down her neck… across her shoulder. Desperately, she found her fingers claw him away… only provoking more struggle…

***

Curses… Why the hell wasn't she picking up?… Shifting the gear, he glanced at the time… 2:12am… Maybe she is sleeping at home by now… But she was really upset when he had met her earlier this evening… Why the hell did he care anyways! Unable to figure an answer, he absent-mindedly looked out the window… The street was deserted… Lost in his thoughts, he watched indifferently as the view passed by… His eyes narrowed in confusion as he approached the deserted vehicle… Stepping on the brakes, he opened the door…

***

Shaking vehemently, she was faintly aware of the sounds of struggle not far off… Desperately, she rubbed the length of her arms… crossing them across her chest. Her lips quivered, as the eyes darted aimlessly into nothingness… She pushed her back into the tree, as though escaping it all… in vain…

***

Fury gripped his every muscle… as he showered his wrath relentlessly upon the pathetic goons… As he fumbled and straightened himself… his temple pulsed… as his fingers curled… When his intention suddenly vanished… her voice… Turning, he felt his innards scatter into shards at the sight… She lay in a heap of stuttering chaos… Her clothes tattered… Her petite frame was pulled rigidly together, yet it shook uncontrollably. At some point, fierce tears threatened his vision…

Seeing the feeble drape not far off, went and gathered it… calculatedly approaching her… As he bent before her, the horror-stricken eyes evoked anguish within him… Had it not been for her faint murmer… he could swear… they wouldn't see the life of tomorrow… The cowards had long made an escape…

Unsure of what to do, and in mixed rage himself, he gently extended a hand towards her. Immediately, she pulled back with force… pushing farther into the trunk… Suddenly, the helplessness overpowered his instincts and sat before her with unknown intention… Curses… As his eyes fell upon the remnants of the vile attack on her shoulder… rage burned through him once more… How dare they touch her… Seeing her hallowed eyes once more, his features softened… As he extended his arm towards her yet again… She attempted pulling back, rubbing his hands away… still frightened…. And finally gave into his stubborn grasp… as he pulled her close… slowly, but surely… the shaking gently subsided… giving way to silent cries of sorrow….

Part 3

He felt her petite fingers dig through the feeble cloth layering his skin as she continually trembled in his confident hold. Time seemed to fade as oddly everything but her, numbed out… She too, appeared faintly aware of any existence… outside his embrace… still trembling a slightly… At some point, the reality drained through, and he hesitantly pulled her away… She refused to move… still clinging to his chest as though life itself… depended upon it. Another silent pause in time elapsed… whilst he unknowingly gathered his composure… Again, he carefully pulled away… his fingers handling her with utmost care… to his own surprise… Getting up, he purposely averted his eyes from lingering on her… afraid of the consequences… doubtful of his own… Bringing an arm around her petite frame, he pulled her cautiously into his arms…

Her heart thudded against her chest… as her head throbbed… Confusion… despair… pain… vibrated from her pathetic state… Devastated by her ill fate and so lost in the deep seas of ache… she faintly noticed the two arms taking her into their security

Unaware of the paled texture of his knuckles… his eyes hesitantly drifted towards the glass of the rear-view mirror… and quickly turned away… still unsure of his confused self, and the horrifying state… As the image of the cowards preying upon her fell before his open eyes once more… the piercing scream of the brakes echoed in the night's air… Running his hands over his face, he struggled to maintain his composure. As his hands fell to his sides… the fingers rigidly curled… and released in frustration. He couldn't decide what it was… He felt bad for her indeed… but why these vehement feelings… Why?… Looking through the open window, his eyes found their way to the open skies above… "Kyun…" the husky whisper fled his lips… almost pleading… as though the answer held the key to his fate… The plea fainted as though unheard in the darkness… Silence

Delicately setting her upon the soft surface, he took a step back… The single moon seeped curiously through the transparent drapes hovering aimlessly afore the large bay window… Without a glance upon the figure before him, he retraced his steps to the exit…

Back… and forth… back… and forth… As she rocked her rigidly composed body into snail-form… her thoughts seemed to have dissipated into nothingness… Suddenly, her body stiffened still… the emptied eyes still void of expression… yet holding a stoic quality. The soft waves of oblivious hairs fell luxuriously around her face, while her hands somehow found the fabric of her dupatta… conservatively draped across her chest. Holding a trembling hand atop where perhaps her heart seemed to have lost it's rhythm… she calculatedly lifted her gaze to be challenged by a pair of almond eyes blazed in indescribable fire… Lingering upon the face, her eyes failed to make eye contact… trailing towards the little bowl in his hand…

Why did it feel like something inside was crushing… dispersing unknowingly like the remnants of fragile glass… The light breeze blew generously in the spacious compartment… throwing her dishelved wavy tresses across her face… Through the silky layers, part of her eyes met with his… her gaze stoned in pain… and the fear… burning an invisible hole through his existence… He looked towards the hand… resting securely over where her heart beat to an unknown tempo… Her legs pulled up rigidly against her chest, only confirming her terrified status… A searing pain rushed through his veins as he watched her paralysis give way to the shivers once more… She nervously pushed herself backwards… her one hand still holding the dupatta in place, while the other fumbled behind her for support… As he sat before her… her eyes dug through him… almost as though looking for unanswered questions… His vision suddenly blurred and quickly he turned his head in mix of anger and helplessness… Squinting his eyes, he reopened them slowly… and confidently turned his attention back towards her. "Ma… aitha… li…" the throaty voice resonated through the empty walls, lingering somewhere in the air… At some point, she had left his gaze… and now… as he breathed the name, he claimed her attention once more… He hesitantly brought a hand towards her… Seeing the instability of it, frustration swept over his senses… God, what the hell is wrong with me! Angerly, he looked up at the solemn face… its beauty radiating even through the despair… His features automatically softened… "Maithali…" he breathed once more… holding a reassuring tone as she looked at him blankly… She took an uncertain look at the dampened cloth in his hand… and then looked back towards him. Lifting his free hand, he gently removed the hairs scattered across her face…. She squinted her eyes, and he noticed the goosebumps run across the length of her arm… Much to his surprise again, he found himself pleading at her through his eyes… pleading… Vikram-Aditya Mehra pleading… and that too… to a girl… The thought fleetingly crossed his mind when he noticed the twitch in her hand… as she silently brought it down… lowering her gaze to a destination unknown… Silently, he cursed under his breath… bracing himself for what lay beneath the veil… Gently, his fingers reached for the battered covering, revealing the wounds left by a seething lust… He suddenly felt nauseous… but seeing her restlessness, he swallowed it… The throbbing rage subsiding into an almost guilty sensation… Meticulously, he worked across the imprints of unjustified hunger… He felt his muscles unknowingly relax as he felt her shiver under his touch… Strange it was, but the sensation lurked nonetheless… As he finished the crucial process, he got up and took a step back… shamelessly arresting her in his gaze… but only to find a little satisfaction in his work. She had not moved a muscle besides the occasional shivers… nor did her eyes… and still she sat uncomfortably… Noticing her discomfort, he turned towards the bowl, dispensing the cloth into the stale water… As he turned to leave… his feet ceased mid-step… Squinting his eyes, he desperately searched for strength… and turned to her forehead pressed against his hand, encompassed urgently by both her own… Frozen… he only twitched feeling the warmth of a droplet trail down his hand…

Part 4

As the warm liquid snaked across his skin leaving a burning sensation, a sudden emptiness crawled within him. Slowly, his lips parted in speech… but words were nowhere to be found… His mouth seemed to have dried… Swallowing, he looked at her once more… Bending afore her, his eyes dared not loose her in their hold… as she clung to his hand… still pressing it against her forehead. Confusion fogged his senses; as he struggled to decipher what he felt… what he was to do… At some point, his free hand nervously extended towards her with hope of comfort… Lost amidst his own mixed emotions he had no knowing of a way of helping another control theirs… Still, as he determined himself to move away from the chaos inside him… his gesture came to a stand in mid-air… as his other hand suddenly fell from her urgent grasp… He sat motionless for an endless pause… feeling the silky hair breathe across his face… the unshed tears drench through to his shirt… As she… bit-by-bit… broke down… Unveiling that, which he somewhere deeply dreaded… Curses… As her nails dug into his chest, the confusion abruptly gave way to a pain… unknown… unfelt… until this very moment… as the shattered pieces of a broken heart, sought solace… from him… Strange pain it was… sweet… if pain could be called so… But accompanying this pain… was the sting… the knowledge of her ache… Hesitantly at first, his arms eventually enclosed her in their secure grasp… determined to let the moment offer comfort… to her… him

As the water seeped through the feeble cloth covering her… slithering across her skin… its feel provoked no response… Flashes of the fateful day screened before her eyes… The announcement of her love to be another's… the smiling moon, mocking her state… the venomous hungry attackers… Creases of unreadable experience fell on her paled face… as the eyes drifted solemnly towards where her hand already lay… the marks left behind by the goons… As her vision blurred once more, the clear liquid was no longer distinguishable from the tears... Suddenly, her expression distorted in shades of... disgust... rage.... and ultimately... helplessness... as she vigorously rubbed at her skin, adamant to repeal the reality… With her knees failing to support her, the silhouette shrunk... as she fell into a heap on the cool floor... The soft tap of water still echoing against the tiles... while silent screams of pain roared within…

***

Faintly, the soft trickling of water from the other side of the wall… seeped through his thoughtless thinking… Pensively, he pushed into the cool leather of the sofa… the glass still loosely secure in his right hand. Hazily, he pierced into the transparent liquid… twirling the glass in his fingers… While the eyes continued to study the liquid making soft waves… as it danced to the tune of his movement. The perfectly kohled eyes smiled at him… as his gaze drifted to the lips, in sync with the eyes… Unknowingly, the happiness on her lips echoed upon his own… Suddenly, the happiness dissipated… as the eyes turned hallow… the lips quivering… Rage surged through his veins… accompanied by a disgusting helplessness… The sound of sharp glass hitting the grounds afar… lingered in the stillness of the room…

***

A gentle breeze meandered its way through unseen cracks in the room… suddenly picking up momentum. Her expressions slowly gave way to reality… Looking around, the unfamiliar surroundings sunk in. Realizing her state, her footsteps progressed hesitantly towards a cupboard… Her fingers trembled as they slithered across the cloth…

***

Taking calculated strides down the descending staircase, her eyes vigilantly scanned the surroundings… The soft blue of her pallu wavered in the still present breeze… The walls… the doors… everything felt so distant… yet to near… As her fingers gingerly fell upon the railing… feeling her way through… her feet stopped at the last step… as her eyes fell upon the stranger heaped on the dark leather nearby… Forcing her muscles, she approached the figure… His strong features softened in unsettled slumber… as his body lay scattered across the surface of the sofa… Standing but a few inches away, she unwillingly bent before the man lost in sleep… Her eyes continually penetrating the face… Even in sleep, there seemed to be a continual disturbance in his features… The rigidity evident to her perhaps… because she too had felt a similar sensation… Suddenly it dawned on her… The connection… despite having never shared anything with this man… they still connected… through a bond… a bond dipped in agonizing pain… The cause of his pain she could not fathom considering his stature… but she felt as though  somehow attached to… A knot formed itself in her stomach as the realization dug deeper into her… a searing ache seemed race through her veins… as she set her eyes on this man… A man whom she had no apparent relation… yet with whom, she shared the deepest bonds ever said to be… dard ka rishtaa (the relation of pain).

Unable to understand the twists of her fate, she abruptly got up to leave… Squinting her eyes, as the pearls spilled once more, she turned… to see the end of her pallu unexpectedly caught between his slightly curled fingers. Without a thought, she gently lifted the fabric and disappeared into the darkness…

Days had indifferently passed into a week… two weeks… three… His eyes steely looked into nothingness as the same image came afore his open eyes yet again… He had not seen her since… Obliviously striding towards the large window of the room, his feet ceased mere inches away from the glass… Confusion still clogged his senses as the image of her solemn face haunted him in every moment… What is wrong with me?… The sound of his fist colliding forcefully against the wall echoed in the stillness… as his eyes aimlessly fell upon the crowded image of strikers across the street… Turning his gaze away ignorantly from the scene, he found it retrace it's course… Narrowing his eyes, he penetrated through the soft lilac fabric flying in the air… the owner's face lost behind liberated strands of silky hairs… Suddenly, chaos struck the crowd as people pushed against one another… Police officers desperately tried to calm the situation… but to no avail. As they brought out the sticks, the gatherers turned more violent… The lilac-clad figure held up two bangle-laiden arms, as an aimless strike of a stick came towering afore… Unknown to what had overcome him, he felt an urgent rush… as could be noticed from the clicking of his shoes against the tiled flooring… running… like there were no tomorrow…

Part 5

It was as though an inexplicable adrenaline rush had overpowered his senses... The calls of the familiar voice of Dheenu Kaka breezed passed... unnoticed... like the fiery current of air brushing his skin while continuing on...

Her eyes instinctively widened in horror as the stick towered over her... Her muscles for some reason failed to respond... and she stood there... closing her eyes... as a minute passed... and another... When the fatal blow never came, she squinted her eyes open... Chaos was everywhere... A nauseous feeling overwhelmed her senses as she extended a hand through her hair… struggling to maintain herself on her feet… Determined, she desperately gathered the last drops of her strength and pushed… each step taxing her energy. The angry cries of frustration encircling her appeared to have suddenly increased; yet to her they had seemed to fade… As she continued, the struggle amidst the crowd became more violent. A silent cry escaped her parted lips as pained seared up her leg… Curses… Falling to the ground, everything before her eyes began to haze… A minute passed as the distant cries faded even more… when at some point, a voice dared to penetrate the invincible barrier that had slowly grown between her and her surroundings… Feeling a pair of firm hands lift her head, she squinted her eyes open with deep effort… The face was a blur… like that which is captured in mid-movement in a camera… distant, yet engraved somewhere in the memory… Shifting her eyes, she focused on the lips… moving to some rhythm she could not at the moment fathom… and then looked back to the eyes… the only feature which appeared to be clear… familiar… As everything turned to darkness, she felt a pair of secure arms take hold of her… "Ahhdi…" she breathed… Darkness….

***

As the darkness gave way to the light… she stirred gently… squinting her closed eyes in irritation… Unknowingly, her hands took hold of the white fabric… scrunching it into a ball… Slowly, she opened her eyes to the strangely familiar sight… The deep crimson and soft creams of the room welcomed her with soothing warmth… while the warm rays of the afternoon sun let the comfort soak through… Lifting a hand to her loosely pulled back tresses, she momentary closed her eyes… and re-opened them to the same… As her hands fumbled aimlessly around her, the realization slowly came forth… "Ab kaisa lag raha hai?" (How are you feeling now?)… For a moment, she dared not lift her eyes… the rough yet somehow endearing voice registered… Looking up… a strange dread creased her face… yet there was an odd glitter… of something she could not recall ever before experiencing… Something like the feeling of coming upon a reservoir of heavenly water in the midst of scorching desert sands… It was as though she had almost been savouring the same voice… Squinting her eyes, she re-opened them and looked up… trying to push away the foreign thoughts. "Ahhdi…?" Immediately, she regretted opening her mouth… It was something she couldn't explain… but it seemed that every time she spoke it, it lingered somewhere in her… The soft hazel eyes grazed her presence accompanied with a small smile. The gentle current blissfully blew through the cracks… a few locks of hair dancing to its rhymthic tune… caressing her cheek… Swallowing, she looked around and opened her mouth to speak, determined to keep her composure. "Main yahan…?" (How did I…?) From the corner of her eyes, she could see his relaxed posture leaning against the doorframe shift… the previously crossed arms now hung loose to the sides, while his hands hid into the pockets of the faded denim. A tanned jacket accompanied the white polo stretching against the hidden bulk. Her gaze shifted to the black shoes neatly polished… now making their way towards her… She suddenly felt uncomfortable and went to stand up, when the pull on her arm made her stop. "Maithali, its ok… tum aram karo…" (Maithali, its ok… you should take rest…)… As he sat casually next to her, she felt as though undergoing an interrogation… arrested in the other's eyes. Shifting nervously, she pushed back into the pillow, stiffly keeping her knees close to her chest. "Wohe… tum… " (Um… you…) he began with a note of uncertainty… as though having magically lost speech… Shaking his head ever so slightly, he continued… "Tum bheed mein gir gayi teeh, aur ittefaq se maine tumhe dekh liya…" (You had fallen in the crowd, and by coincidence I happened to be there...) Much to her surprise, she noticed the tone of his voice lower with each word… She looked at him, piercing into the nothingness ahead, and then turn to face her. A faint smile garnished his lips, as he got up, filling his pant pockets with his hands once more… as one does when perhaps they are trying to hide their tremble. Turning towards the door, he moved to exit… Stopping a mere step away… he turned his head to the side… and then turned again to face her… His footsteps echoed in her mind as she consciously lowered her gaze. She could feel him, standing next to her… now bending his body enough so that his lips were mere inches from her quivering lips. Suddenly, she looked up… as the carelessly held locks came cascading down… to the joy of the ever-present breeze… She didn't know what it was, but something fluttered within her… as the tall figure disappeared into the shadows beyond the door of the room… closing with a soft "click…"…

***

He was fully aware of her reading right through the file in hand while Janki Devi towered before him… her lips moving to things he failed to comprehend… Upon his antics, he had stumbled upon the fact that the lady afore was his mother's mother… Not blood-related, but their bonding was perhaps greater than that of those who claimed to be born into such relations. Coincidence or not, she had also been at the scene of the revelation… He had come to respect her and been awed by Parvati Agarwal's persona… her drive… her family… her love… Despite years, Om breathed in her soul… She stood like a rock, but had the capacity to melt others…

He continued to stare at the elegant lady with blankness written over his face… his eyes occasionally alluding to the other woman in the room. Curses… It had been weeks now, and he couldn't understand why she was constantly in his thoughts… why every time a door creaked, he expected her… why his ears strained for that soft melodious voice… The familiar anger threatened to serge through him once more… It hadn't helped that in some way or another, fate had always brought her in front of him… His thoughts were interrupted as the authorative, yet calm voice penetrated through… He looked up startled, "Ji Maa… mera matlab Ma'am" Her firmness seemed to have dissipated as the words reverbrated against eh walls… The kohled eyes haunting him, now looked up in surprise as well… Parvati Agarwal now seemed to be contemplating a smile, which eventually lit up on her face… Stepping around the glass table, she came afore him. He looked curiously at the hand now resting affectionately on his right cheek… "Tumhara matlab toh shayad tum khud hi nahin jaante…" (Perhaps even you do not realize what you mean…). His gaze shifted towards his grandmother's face… a mischievous glint furthering his curiosity emitted from her eyes…

***

She stared at the clock… the big hand resting half-way between the five and six, while the small one sat somewhere near the two… Her gaze then shifted towards the window… the night grew deeper with each "tick…" Lingering on the extraordinarily bright moon, she was brought out of her thoughts once more by the tap against the door… There was an urgency in it's done… almost a desperation…  She got out of her bed, setting aside the book in hand. She had of late, a great difficulty in sleeping and had attempted various resources to aid her… the latest of which was reading. Curses… who could it be at this hour… The thought was overwhelmed by curiosity and more prominently, a fear… as her eyes fell upon the bold frame leaning against the doorframe…

Part 6

"Adi…?"  As the name left her lips, a smile danced upon his. A knot of uncertainty twisted in her stomach. Recalling the strange feeling haunting her since the moment her eyes opened this morning, she only felt more nervous. All throughout the day, an unexplainable feeling had shadowed her… She couldn't explain, but the thoughts were stubborn and her will to dismiss them… effortful, but in vain. Momentarily, she ripped her eyes away from his smirking face, at the recollection of the fact that he had ever since, in some way or another, maintained in her mind.

Absentmindedly, she shifted her weight as his eyes dug through her exterior. A slight irritation welled up inside as she felt his lips curving deeper upwards, making the endearing dent in his cheek soak through his skin. Taking a deep breath, she desperately searched for remnants of her restraint… restraint from that which she knew not, and yet feared encountering. As her eyes met with his once more, the words left her… the irritation dissipated as though never there. His eyes… they burned. The gentle film lining the outskirts met with faint moonbeams peering through loosely kept drapes. She jumped slightly, startled as her foot unknowingly met with an upturned end of the large area rug. Bracing a fall, her hands flew into the air, as her eyes closed at the prospect of hitting the floor …As her eyes meandered around his domineering form, towards the door… it dawned on her, the distance she had travelled at his every firm step forward… pulling her backwards… A sigh of relief escaped her slightly parted lips as his feet ceased inches away.

"Maithali…" Her eyes studied the lips as they recited the name… her name… almost as though it were a plea. His breath reeked of alcohol, assuring the gentle glaze on his eyes. She wanted to turn immediately at the abhorred smell, but her reflexes failed to cooperate. "Mujhe tumse baat karni hai…" (I need to talk to you…) Almost instantly, her eyes met with his… The confident tone in his husky voice told her that he was not completely out of his senses… He had knowledge of the surroundings… But… It wasn't the dimness, she knew… The normally hazel eyes were currently dark… deep as the night… fervent. Blinking away her surprise, the thought drifted through her mind… Is he in his senses? Silence… As her body relapsed into reality, her deaf ears were summoned by the faint, yet ever-present voice of Soham Chakrabarty… The captivating voice had somehow wandered the various corners of the compartment… finding her… like him

She could feel his eyes map her entirety… After an endless pause, she mustered up the courage to speak… Managing only a whispered tone, she tried to avert her gaze from him… Despite the darkness, it was as though he could feel her every twitch… "Aadhi… hum baat subabh bhi kar… sakte hain…" (Aadhi… we can talk in the morn…) It was as though he had come with a made-up mind… as he interrupted her in a coarse whisper… "Abhi…" (Now…) Unknowingly, she took a step back, taken aback by the momentary ferocity in his tone. Running his hands across his roughened features, he shook his head ever so slightly… Quickly looking back at her, with the same firmness, but the tone had shifted to a softness scarcely noticeable by the oblivious wanderer… "Mera matlab… kal kisne dekha hai…" (I mean… who knows what tomorrow holds…) Crossing her arms across her chest protectively, she allowed herself to ponder at the situation… One thing she knew… Be it the last day on this Earth… he would have his say… The thought made her tremble slightly. The air suddenly seemed to have thickened… or so it seemed to her… A hint of suffocation could be captured from her unnoticeable, yet quick breaths… Nodding gently, she walked to her room to change… realizing an empty house with him and her… was ample enough to make her jitter… As she walked into the darkness, she could feel his eyes outline her silhouette… Confirmed of her dread, she knew there was no way he would make it home tonight… unless she destined him to it…

Ye raat kitni gehri hai… na jaane iss raat ki chadar ke taleh… kya chupah hai…(This night is do deep… who knows what lies beneath… this veil of darkness…) The thought unexpectedly came to her as her feet continued along the same rhythmic pace… as his… Her eyes followed his slightly slugged pace, which she deemed a result of the alcohol running through his veins. Rubbing the length of her arms, her eyes took a glance at her lost companion as they strode in silence. His dark eyes had focused somewhere into nothingness, while his hands fidgeted precariously in the pockets of his denims. Her eyes squinted in a mixture of curiosity and admiration. Masquerading one's true self with such ease… it was commendable indeed. As she looked away, playing with a loose end of her hastily pulled back tresses… she couldn't help but ponder over Adi. Everyone was aware of "Adi", but Adi had always been a mystery. Curses… what was she thinking? Rather than probing at the purpose of his sudden arrival, here she was musing over…

Shaking her head lightly, she shrugged away the thoughts… suddenly aware of his arm encompassing her as her feet failed to cooperate in a moment of uncertainty… Looking up, her eyes met with the dark, intensity-driven pair. An unnoticed minute passed as he held her captive in his piercing gaze. Reality slowly seeped through the moment. Wriggling slightly, she mumbled a "thanks", cautiously straightening herself. The irony of it all she thought… Nashey mein hai wohe… aur kadam mere zameen par dagmagah rahe hain… (He's the one who consumed the alcohol… and my feet are the ones unable to stabilize themselves on the ground…) As they continued walking, the momentary eye-lock lingered somewhere in the air… It was as though even the silence had something to say. The strange thoughts made her more nervous and she found each step forward taxing her energy…. The silence before the storm…  She shivered.

"Maithali…" her breath caught in her throat as once more, the name left his fine lips with such right. Her feet stopped in their tracks… Turning her head, an unexpected panic swept her finding the place next to her empty. Shifting her gaze expectantly behind her, she was assured of his presence by the long shadow stretched across the dark pavement. Tracing the outline, her gaze rested upon his handsome face distorted in inexplicable confusion… fury… She stared at him intently, when her eyes lowered in shame. Tightening her grip on the strap of her handbag, she pulled the base closer to her side. After a pause, she looked back towards him… It was as though he had not moved an inch…  Her eyes narrowed in anticipation, perhaps the wait was over… Breathing a sigh of relief, she shifted her feet so they faced him… assuring him of having her full attention. As he ran a hand nervously through his hair, her curiosity intensified… His lips parted, but nothing came… It was as though he wanted to say something, but didn't know what. Her skin tingled in excitement at the feel of  moisture hitting a spot on her skin… The droplet ran swiftly down her shoulder… disappearing somewhere beneath the pastel green fabric clothing her. Instinctively, her eyes went to the skies… as they burst with raging showers. Surprise creased her face as she ran towards him, startled by nature's spontaneity.

He felt his muscles tighten yet relax at the same time… Removing his eyes from the space she had just recently deserted, he looked towards his side… her damp hair magnetized itself to his arm. His face went blank… it was as though nothing outside this moment existed. Curses… What the hell is wrong with me… The soft patter of the rain hitting the cement echoed musically in the air… He didn't know why… didn't want to know why… but the feel of her presence comforted him. His lips parted once more… but sealed at the prospect of losing touch with the moment. He could feel her petite frame cling to his arm, encircling it with her own… oblivious to what she was doing… Suddenly, the grip on him loosened, as though reality had sunk in once more… She looked up at him with uncertainty, whilst instantly releasing his arm. He observed her intently as she scanned their surroundings. Unknowingly, his feet responded to the tug on his arm…

She exhaled deeply, while looking at the woman staring at her through the glass. A soft cream bore her supple skin, still tingling with the moisture. Mysterious layers of silky hairs extended beneath her shoulders… the ends coiled gently as desperate drops of water clung to them… So much for returning the sari… Bringing a towel to her hair, she observed the distinctly familiar surroundings through the glass afore.

Leaving a hazy Adi on the sofa, she had asked him to discharge his clothes to prevent catching a cold. He had not directly acknowledged her as his fingers explored his drenched hair. For some reason, she had felt the need to move away from his sight… and exited the room making an excuse of "freshening up". In her nervousness, she had stepped into the first room in sight… A room boasting of soft crmes and crimson… so honestly familiar… Whilst bringing her hand down in the rhythmic motion with the towel, Soham's voice found her yet again…

Her thoughts abruptly faded, as she felt another's presence in the room… Looking through the glass again, her eyes grazed upon him… A fresh paste of moisture gleamed across the open skin of his bulky upper half bulging through the unbuttoned half-sleeve… while the denims still garnished his lower body. Turning, she failed to react to the paled texture of her knuckles as she scrunched the towel in hand. For a minute, her eyes lingered upon his boastful figure… unsure of how to react and her eyes refused to part… Slightly taken aback by her own shameless observation, she pulled her eyes off him… rather clutching the fabric in hand tighter, while finding a place to disappear within the ground… Silence ensued… As she felt his eyes outline her various dimensions… Curses… She felt as though immobile, yet desired to run afar and not look back. Moments uncounted drifted in echoing silence as she delved deeper into a case of vulnerability… unable to escape the eyes holding her captive. Her eyes shift nervously towards the ground… where his feet bore the pristine white… She watched as they approached her… firmly… Looking up, she took a step back… the material in hand having lost it's purpose and place… as she stepped over it obliviously… Her heart thudded rigourously against her chest as his strides dared not slacken. Feeling the wall against her back, her startled eyes met his. A tingle of apprehension filled her flustered senses as she lowered her eyes. The warm breath releasing from him... stung her cheek as she stood paralyzed... After an endless pause, she turned towards him... For the first time ever, meeting his eyes equally. Trailing the firm jawline... over the unshaven stubble... the slightly parted lips... the firm nose... the fervent eyes... As though holding in a breath of air, she allowed her lips to part... "Aadhi...?" Her lips trembled beneath the covering of his finger as he hushed her... Tilting his head ever so slightly, she watched his eyes drift away from her face momentarily... and then back at her... Her eyes closed... allowing the feel of his cool hand burn her skin as it weaved through the feeble fabric... finding her waist... Feeling her body be pulled closer to his, a silent tear escaped the closed eye-lid... as his lips disallowed it from reaching the ground. As he moved his face away, his lips left a lingering sensation upon her cheek... Gently at first, his lips left imprints across her neck... and across her shoulder blade...

Part 7

As his lips parted from her skin, he failed to understand his situation… He stared at her beautiful face, illuminated by the moonbeams secretly swaying across the room… as his own face, rested amongst the shadows… Her eyes remained closed… as though in a wonder of where she stood between the shores of dream and reality… The thought left him in the same boat… hanging lose of shores… but all he knew at the moment, was that he had stepped into untried waters… and they had slowly risen above any truth had… A few locks of hair drifted outside the hurriedly kept bunch… luxuriously caressing her cheek. Lifting a hand, he cupped the right side of her face… his fingers running smoothly across the sun-kissed skin… as his eyes finally fell upon the lips… As his eyes studied them, an unexpected urge seemed to have veiled over him… an urge to crush his own… upon them… An urge to devour the taste of hers on his own… relish… Lifting his gaze momentarily to encompass her entire face, his thumb rubbed against her bottom lip… A gentle smile fleetingly threatened upon his own, at observing the subtle squinting of her closed lids… As his eyes ran down her face once more… they ceased yet again… at her lips… Slowly, he titled his head… bringing it closer to hers… His mouth settling sincerely upon hers… As she melted into his grasp, he felt her finally respond… her hands had begun to explore his hair… As he wrapped her into this frenzied state, he felt the uncertainty within… fade… Moving his head to the side of her face, he washed away the hesitancy… capturing the fleeting tear from her closed eye… with his lips… Moving his hand to the back of her head, released the grateful locks… as they came cascading down… bathing him in their seductive presence…

She stood paralysed in the moment… in his arms… As he rubbed his unshaven stubble against her cheek, flashes of moments spent with her father transiently passed before her closed eyelids… leaving a gulf of uncertainty once more… She couldn't ever recall feeling so…vulnerable… yet so… secure… "Methali…" as the name left his lips beneath the veil of her open tresses… she felt the doubt wash away… almost instantly… His tone had been calm… rightful almost… She faintly recalled being lifted from the ground… the ornaments garnishing her wrists making music distantly… As she lost herself in the night's passionate demeanour…

***

The soft peddling of tiny droplets against the grounds whispered musically through the large open window… as it moved in tranquil rhythm with the soft, chilly breeze… The room was cast in shadows and stealth moonbeams, preying at the peaceful slumber of two lost in it…

She could feel the goosebumps crawl across her arm as a soft chilly breeze blew against her skin… Slightly irritated, she brought her arm beneath the safety of the covers… sinking into the comfortable warmth. Outstretching it slightly, her palm fell upon a tender, yet noticeably firm surface… Lazily, her eyes took their time adjusting to the dimmed room… and her surroundings… As her gaze fell upon her open palm, she could feel everything else momentarily go numb… Perhaps in disbelief, she squinted her eyes… reopening them to the same… Her petite hand lay softly against the open skin of a man's chest… trailing her eyes up the built, they rested upon the distinctly familiar facial features… of "Adi…" the name left her lips with a perplexing tone… It held a mixture of surprise, yet feel… panic, yet calm… betrayal, yet honesty… As it all registered… the unexpected arrival of Adi at her place… his uncertain balance… the stroll to Mehra house… his pensive footsteps… the solid wall behind her… his soft lips against her skin… being obliviously lifted into the air… Her face went blank… sitting up with a start, she clutched the sheet conservatively against her chest.

After what seemed an endless pause, she hesitantly removed her eyes from staring into nothingness… and pulled them to his face… It was free from creases… a slight curve on the ends of his tender lips… a serene blankness overlay his face… For the first time, it was Vikram-Aditya Mehra… or more like Adi… not "Adi", that she was seeing… It was as though such sleep had not been generous to the man… As if guided by his magnetizing innocence under the blanket of deep sleep, her hand outstretched to his forehead… gently caressing his silky hairs… gently… delicately… A genuine smile danced lightly on her lips at the peaceful sight, as uncounted minutes passed in oblivion… as though engraving the moment… in her mind… Her empty thoughts were unexpectedly interrupted by a soft murmur leaving his lips as he turned comfortably to the side… innocently encompassing her wrist within his arms. The breath caught in her throat, and almost instantly… her eyes became misty with unexplained emotion… Carefully, she released herself from his grasp and walked into the shadows… covering her body… emitting his scent, which now engulfed her senses almost entirely… knowing she would recognize it within an instant… if she ever parted with it.

Turning her head slightly, she turned her body to look back at the robust chest… rising and falling… in calming rhythm… As her head turned slowly back towards the door, the voices from the halls of the college and otherwise rang in her mind… "Adi? He's such a player. He can't even hold a girl for a day!"… "Did you see the college paper, Vikram-Aditya Mehra, voted as the campus Casanova… no surprises there…"  As the voice replayed in her mind… mixed with his face… her feet extended across the line to the exterior of the room… Her mind lost in utter confusion… whereas somewhere deep within, it felt as though she had left a large part of herself behind… in his embrace… his hold…

***

As she stepped into her room, her face remained expressionless… the voices ringing clear in her head… yet more apparent… was his eyes… that ceased to remove their hold of her, despite his absence… She could clearly see her reflection within them, as he looked at her… in a moment of uncertainty. Falling to the ground, she rested an arm across the end of the bed. It was as though she knew it was all real… the touch… the feel… the bond… the sentiments… Yet, somewhere… the girl within her held some doubt… What if… The unfinished thought burned her mind… Ye mujhe kya ho raha hai… She felt like screaming out her agony, yet there was no voice… It wasn't regret really… just… uncertainty? … All that overpowered the constant thudding of her heart against her chest… was "Maithali…" her name upon his lips… as she rested her head against her arm… Lost in thoughts… sleep… him

***
Still enjoying the comfort of blissful sleep, he outstretched his arm lazily across the soft surface… Unknown to him, a gentle smile formed on his lips… when a streak of radiant sunshine fell generously upon his face, as it seared through the translucent drapes flying aloof… Slightly irritated, he squinted his eyes… opening them slowly… The space next to him lay in a scattered manner outlining recent occupancy… Almost immediately, flashes of the passionate night before played in his mind… More so… the aftermath…

(Flashback)

He flinched lightly in his slumber, faintly aware of the presence next to him. Out of habit, he went to turn his body slightly to the right, when he stopped the effort… A pleasant warmth comforted his body, and curiosity shot his eyes open… as his gaze fell upon the beautiful face, lost amiss scattered strands of silky hairs… Lifting his head slightly, he captured the unforgettable sight of beauty… in its purest… most divine… form. "Maithali…" he whispered almost as though assuring reality. His mind was in a haze, consistent with his senses… lost in her… The surroundings and all had seemingly faded, as he stared at her… His finger delicately brushing against her skin as he carefully removed the hairs… revealing her entire face… creaseless in peaceful slumber. Not knowing why, he lifted the back of his hand against the side of her face, as it lay on his chest so comfortably… Running his hand down her face, it felt as though time… indeed… had stopped… in his moment… which he lived… and… would live… times uncounted… for the rest of his life… Unable to disturb her sleep, and unknown to himself, his head fell back onto the pillow… as sleep came with dreams unknown…

(End Flashback)

Suddenly, he sat up… seeing the scattered sheets… the unkempt state of his surroundings… and him. Raking a hand through his hair, his thoughts were interrupted by the buzzing of the rectangular gadget on the side-table. Shifting his gaze to the digital clock on the other end, he quickly picked up the cell… faintly noticing the 8: 02 a.m. or the name flashing across the screen of the little phone… "Hello…" he mumbled…

Part 8

"Adi! Duffer… idiot… you fool! Raat ko kahan chalege gaye tehe tum? Sab party mein tumhare baare mein pooch rahe tehe and I was so embarrassed… Batana toh chahiye tah na. Aur phir maine tumhaare cell par…" (Adi! Duffer… idiot… you fool! Where did you go to last night? Everyone was asking about you and I was so embarrassed… You should have at least informed me. And then I called your cell…).  Suddenly his head felt like it would explode the next second… Bringing a hand through his hair for stability, he squinted his eyes anxiously… "Shreya… Shreya… please… dekho, mere sar mein is waqt zoron se dard hor raha hai… Main tumse baad mein baat karta hoon alright?" (Shreya… Shreya… please… look, my head is about to explode right now… I will talk to you later alright?) So saying, he pressed forcefully down on the "end" button, and threw the little gadget in no particular direction. Sitting up against the backboard of his enormous bed, he again took a glance at his surroundings. His face revealed nothing… In fact, he felt nothing… Nothing, yet something… Something he could not grasp and he realized it was going to drive him to utter ruin… Sighing, he rolled his head back onto the headboard and closed his eyes for relief… Relief, he realized, was now a far-fetched experience from him… His mind obliviously recollected the serenity of her sleeping features. He couldn't recall how long he had lay there… next to her… just taking her in… soaking himself… Every detail of her haunted him… her every breath whispering in his ears… her enthralling scent invigorating his soul… enriching it… bathing it in an irreversible manner. Quickly, he flipped open his eyelids in attempt at reconnection with reality… her absence… As he threw over the thin sheet feebly covering his bulk, he realized he had perhaps stepped beyond the soaking stage… He was drenched… in something even he could not fathom…

***

She closed her eyes in attempt to find solace in the soothing water gushing down at her through the shower… But it was as though the contact was distant in itself. Rubbing her hands across her arm, she felt her stiff skin tighten… Turning the tap down, she lifted her hands to push away the scattered hairs having fallen over her shoulders. Doing so, her eyes aimlessly fell upon the remnants of a suppressed passion… Almost immediately, last night's events came towering down… It was not as though she had for a moment forgotten the encounter… but had tried so hard to fade the memory… all in vain… She could still feel his hands… their touch driving her to a point of never felt ecstatic insanity… What had she done… The thought crossed her mind as she remembered her father waving goodbye as he stepped out the door to board the train to Calcutta for work, the afternoon before. His deep, manly musk filled her senses… He lingered on her… even his scent…  She could smell him on her… feel him… despite his physical absence… he remained with her… Leaning her head against the tiled wall, she crossed her arms… A blank expression etched on her face, underlying the ever blooming bouquet of emotions building within… with each passing moment…

***

The sound of his fist forcefully encountering the steering filled the emptiness of the posh interior of his new ride… Curses… Looking out the window, he saw a crowd growing not too far ahead… he swore impatiently beneath his breath… Again, hitting the circular tool, he rolled his head back onto the headrest, whilst raking a hand through his dark hair. While doing so, his eyes obliviously fell upon the reflection staring at him through the glass of the rear-view mirror. That night had been their last encounter… before she had disappeared… It was as though she had been consumed by the moment. No one had an inclination of her whereabouts… Despite her absence, she somehow made her presence felt… For a pause in time, he just stared back… The only sound audible, being the subtle ticking of the dial making a round on his wristwatch… Months had passed… two… maybe three… since that night. Ever since, he could think… nothing… feel… nothing… see… nothing… Nothing… but her. It was like she had become a part of him… unknowingly… and whatever he did… he couldn't shake her off… Anger boiled into frustration as so often it had… he wanted to scream, but no voice came… Instead, he closed his eyes…

(Flashback)

Her soft features humbled in a peaceful demeanour… as he intently observed her sleeping figure. He knew not the time, nor paid any heed to it… all that captured his attention, was the lady lying next to him. At the moment, the night's events had eroded from his thoughts… replacing them with a strange feeling of satisfaction. Dark tendrils of hair scattered hesitantly across her face… caressing her cheek, as the gentle current rippled through the room… making everything it touched… come to life… He stared at the delicate curve of her full lips at both ends… turn slightly upwards… The scene afore unknowingly echoing the smile playing her lips… upon his own… The tranquil air of the night calmed him, as he continued to stare at her sleeping... with no knowledge of the world, nor any expectations from tomorrow, just content… in the moment. His empty thoughts were suddenly startled by her slumber-induced moan…, as she turned now, facing him… completely unaware of her fatal proximity with him… or so it seemed. The lost smile etched on his face deepened as she brushed the back of her hand irritatingly as the dark waves of hair scattering down… tingling her skin. Ever so cautiously, he brought a hand forth… ceasing just before her cheek… and looked back at her face… her eyebrows still twitched in annoyance… Smiling still, he pulled his hand back… The smile having faded into an impish grin… as he moved his face close… to hers… Pursing his lips together, he gently blew… amusing himself at her unconscious shivers… Releasing her from the torturous teasing, his soft fingers brushed away the remaining strands… his touch barely noticeable… yet he could feel her breathing quicken… As he retraced his hands, his head dug into the soft pillow… As he matched his eyes… with her closed lids… Lost amidst the unknown and yet deeply familiar… he looked to the ceiling… his face having gone creaseless… as he closed his eyes… readily facing the image that would undoubtedly reside in his memories… engraved… for eternity… He smiled, feeling her hands enclose his arm… while she moved closer to him… still in undisturbed sleep…

(End Flashback)

"Arre isse toh haspitaal lejaane ki zaroorat hai!" The unfamiliar voice of an onlooker penetrated through his thoughts. Shifting his gaze, his eyebrows twitched in a mixture of annoyance and curiosity as the crowd afore seemed to have now numbered into seven or eight. Instinctively, he gave into his curiosity… unintentionally slamming the silver door behind him. Weaving his way through the bystanders, he stood at the forefront… His limbs seemed to have frozen at the sight. A woman lay curled up to the side… Her dark hairs scattered unkemptly, hiding her face… while her body coiled and uncoiled in obvious pain… As he hesitantly took a step further, his eyes never leaving the distressed face… dread came tumbling down… Looking at the pool of red generating from the arched figure, an unexpected nausea overwhelmed him. Gradually, as he stepped forward, each step taxing his energy… he felt his heart throb viciously against his chest… Silently, he pleaded for his dread to go unheeded… Bending before the woman, he lifted a hand towards the face… unaware of his trembling fingers… Taking the woman's face into his hands… he felt his worst fears being confirmed… His breath caught in his throat… As his vision began to unexpectedly blur, he choked for words… breathing an almost inaudible, "Mai…thali??"… For a moment, he failed to react. Unknown to this sudden horror, he scanned her frame dreadfully… whilst mumbling some incoherent speech… "Mai… Maithali…" Looking up, he looked into the eyes of each individual… His panic now having hints of anger as they stood their… unresponsive… Instantely, he scooped her into his arms and walked towards his car, whilst barking at no one in particular, to open the back door.

As he drove ferociously down the road, the dial on the dashboard flung in matching speed… Occasionally, his eyes betrayed the driver's instinct… desperately resting upon her unconscious figure reflected through the rear-view mirror… Each time, his foot instinctively pressed down harder on the gas. Flashes of her various expressions played involuntarily in his mind, while he curse under his breath.

He looked vacantly at the space the nurse just moments before had stood… Slowly, his gaze rested upon the rectangular white sheet, she had hurriedly placed in his palm. "Aap jaldi se ye forum bhar dijiye, hum patient ko attend karte hain. Dekhiye, ye ek hit-and-run case hai, isiliye humme police ko bhi bulana hoga…" So saying, the lady in the med uniform had walked off in urgency. He looked now, at the sheet once more. Patient's name… Your name…  Relation to the patient… His mind had numbed to everything, and quickly he scribbled down the required information… in the moment, hardly aware of it's implications… Maithali MehraVikram-Aditya MehraHusband. Quickly, he ran to the receptionist submitting the form, and ran back to the Emergency ward with a pounding pulse…

***

Tilting his right wrist slightly to the side, looked at his watch for the umpteenth time in the last hour… It seemed as though the dial had stopped performing it's task… yet he felt as though years had come and gone. The obvious concern overwhelming him seemed to blur out all other things. Running his hands generously down his face, his fingers entwined into a fist, arching his arms to form a triangular form. Suddenly, his eye lids seemed to become heavy… and let them cover his vision… while his lips silently recited a plea… "Mr. Mehra?" Immediately, his eyes flickered open and he advanced urgently towards the man clad in the pale blue gown. The man politely extended a hand forth, "I'm Dr. Singh", he stated confidently. He took the man's hand into his, clasping his free one over the other. "Doctor, Maithali kaisi hai?" (Doctor, How is Maithali?). As the physician's face fell, he felt the colour drain from his face… while the floor beneath, threatened to betray his stance… "Mr. Mehra, Maithali ji abh teekh hain…" A tranquilizing relief rushed through his veins as the rest of the doctor's voice faded away… as he ran towards her ward… a distinct smile, playing on his lips.

***

Soft breaths leaving her lightly parted lips filtered calmly through the noiseless room. He stood in the shadows of the room, frozen on the spot… as his eyes fixated upon her unconscious figure. All things forgotten, he felt a calming satisfaction seeing her safe… He couldn't remember the last time he had felt so high strung about a loss… Indeed, had something happened to her… he felt it would have been a loss… a irreplaceable void in his existence. The fact lingered somewhere within… Blinking, he brushed it away… suppressing the stubborn sensations… a task he thought he had by now mastered; yet she had seemed to bring out the real within him… Taking calculated steps, he advanced towards her undisturbed frame. The bright beams focused their attention upon her, illuminating her tender features… borrowing grace from her undeniable beauty. Silently still, he sat next to her… his hand having found hers. Entwining his fingers with hers, he sat immobile. His eyes dared not rip apart from her… it was as though he had to see her there… Distanced with understanding and time, he sat there for moments uncounted… His free hand carefully enclosed hers from the other side now… together… forming one… Exhaling lightly, he carefully placed her hand to the side, aware of the strange feelings intensifying within him.

Getting up to leave, he turned his head a last time… taking in her face… His eyes twitched as he watched her hand unconsciously fall upon her stomach. Creases of restlessness distorted her face now, as her eyes slowly squinted open. Immediately, he fell to her side once more… his hand gently caressing the scattered hairs falling at her face… "Maithali…" he whispered softly, as though a mantra… of a assurance… more himself so… Her brown eyes matched his tiredly for a moment, before scanning her surroundings… "Adi…" Occassionally, her eyes drooped with exhaustion, as she tried pulling her figure up… "Aahdi… main… main kahan…" Suddenly, her eyes widened… as though in a sudden realization… He watched her gaze shift from him to where her hand sat confidently on her lower stomach… "Aahdi… Adi… mera… mera bacha… ?" she breathed… Her voice quivering with dread… her eyes glazed with moistness… Suddenly the faded voice of the doctor now seemed to blare into the empty walls of his mind… "Hum bachey ko nahin…" (We couldn't save the baby…). He stared at her emptily… as it all registered… Each passing moment weighted in the air… as she grasped his arms vehemently… desperately… "Ahdi…" she pleaded… The breath caught in his throat… His head mechanically turned in the negative. Immediately, her hands fell to her sides… her face having gone blank in horror… A moment passed as she looked from here to there frantically… Occassionally her hand having gone back to where there recently stirred a life… The void within her made her body tremble. Instinctively, his arm outstretched… He looked startled as she fervently shrugged away at his touch… Drowned in fury and pain, she matched his gaze with cold eyes… "Kaise pitah ho tum? Aapne hi bache ko marah hua bata rahe ho!" (What kind of father are you? Calling your own child dead!)… Her shrill voice echoed resoundingly against the hollow walls… A deathly silence ensued as reality came tumbling down… In his anxiety, he had failed to comprehend the doctor's words… and now they struck him like lightening. "Mera… bacha…" (My… child…), he whispered in barely audible voice… His speech cracked… as everything went blank…

***

It had been almost a week now… But time had meant nothing to one scattered in distress. He sat immobile on the cool floor… his back resting hard against the wall. All things that had ever entertained him now seemed but distant sweet memories, as the harsh reality of his life constantly engulfed him. News of her unresponsiveness had reached him, filtered through the walls as his mother conversed with Janki Ma'am. A part of him had wanted instantly to run to her… hold her… comfort her… protect her… But her eyes void of expression… it stirred an unexplainable fear in him. He lingered from one place to the other… the ways of life having long lost touch. Now, he stared blankly at the floor… his legs brought up casually as his arms flung over them. His empty thoughts were stirred as stared at the feet… The presence of another slowly penetrated through the invincible barrier that had erected around him. Looking up, his eyes met with the so familiar ones… Immediately, he flung his arms around her lower half… clutching her tightly… while the unexpected tears stung at the edges of his closed eyes… "Maithali…" The name having left his lips as though but a prayer… As the ticking object on the distant wall continued it's course, he felt her limbs begin to give way… as she melted in his embrace… falling on his lap… as all barriers broke… uniting the two in grief. As she buried her head in his chest, he enclosed her into his arms. Together, they shared the pain… of their loss… After unheeded time, as the silent weeping gave way to stifling sobs he felt her tight grip on his collar loosen. Tilting her head, she looked up at him with misty eyes… a reflection of his own… he saw in them… as he stared back faithfully. Suddenly she stirred, as though in recollection of her situation. Abruptly, she got up, murmuring an apology she disappeared into the distance… as he obliviously lifted an outstretched arm… His lips parted… but nothing came out…

Mayuri came striding quickly into her son's room to find him staring pensively out the open window. She had of late noticed his increasingly isolated behaviour and everytime she questioned him, he would shrug off the question with a half-hearted smile or otherwise… But now, her fear only deepened. She had seen the world and experienced it too… Her son, she noticed, had been inflicted with a deep wound, which she felt better not to press on. She decided he needed to get out more. Placing a hand on his shoulder, she gently called out to him, "Adi beta?" He turned slowly, as though composing himself… Facing her now, he gave her a small smile. "Mom?" She smiled back at him, taking his hands into hers. "Beta, main nahin jaanti ke kya hua hai… lekin beta… zindagi hai na… kabhi rukti nahin hai…  Humme waqt ke sang behna hota hai… aur ye hi sab se badi haqeeqat hai." (Dear, I don't know what happened… but son… life… it never stops for anyone… We must flow in the river of time… and this is the biggest truth). So saying, she watched her son's face twitch in a mixture of surprise and confusion. After a minute, she smiled squeezing his hands tighter. "Beta, pata hai aaj Badi Maa ka phone aya tah… aur unhon ne bataya ke Maithali…" (Son, you know, today Badi Maa had called and said… she said that Maithali…). Instantly, his eyes shot up attentively meeting his mother's. "Maithali ki sagayi tehe hogayee hai…" (Maithali's engagement has been fixed…). He released his hands from his mother's grasp, and she looked up startled slightly. Brushing aside her confusion, she continued,"… Praney ke saath… aur sagayee kal ko hai. Mujhe koi bahana nahin suna na, tumhe chalna padega you get it?" (With Praney… and the engagement is tomorrow. I don't' want to hear anything, you have to come along, you get it?), she finished with a finger pointed to his nose. Smiling faintly, she left the room bringing a hand around her back, as she held her pallu tight. He watched his mother walk away… as it all seeped through…

There was something in the air tonight he supposed… as the waves raged thunderously against the shores. A fierce wind raged against everything crossing its path. Seagulls squawked aimlessly in the air… But it all was a distant world to the one who sat unmoved upon the large boulder.

He stared pensively into the waters, as they attempted to tease him… every now and then flinging high in the air… landing somewhere upon his stiff figure. Mayuri's voice played over and over in his mind… the minute he had heard the news, he had rushed out of the house as though overwhelmed by suffocation.  His tires had screeched to a halt at the shores of the ocean… where so often he had secretly come to share his life, with the responsive waters. Flashes of his encounters with her came afore his eyes… With each passing minute, he felt the realization deepen… the realization… that she meant something to him… More than he had ever anticipated… more than anyone besides his mother had meant… A girl whom he had but only months before met, now threatened his very identity… He had heard people speak of love… that strange feeling written and filmed about… and that is how he had reacted to it… He had feelings for her, he admitted to himself… But they were not the kind played in the theatres, or scribbled in the texts… These feelings had reigned his every moment, haunted him in sleep, taken away his everything… yet left a satisfaction. Turning his eyes towards the open skies, he watched a group of white birds fly in a circular motion high above him. "Panchiyon bhi kya kismat hai na… Insaan har pal ye sochta hai ke wohe asmaan ko chuey… aur ye… inhe toh asmaan ke ilava kuch bhata hi nahin…" (Birds have such a fate na… Humans always think of touching the sky… and them [the birds]… they no nothing but the skies…). Her sweet melodious voice penetrated through his thoughts, unknowingly a smile played upon his lips. Getting up with a start, he whispered to the words "main ah raha hoon…" (I'm coming…)… and ran towards his vehicle.

***

"Ahhditum?" she looked at him bewildered. There was no one home at the moment, but she knew that Shruti aunty would be coming soon enough. Turning her back to him, she stuttered out the words, "Tum yahan kya karne aaye ho?" (What are you here for?). When no answer came, she turned to face him… but saw nothing… Confused, she straightened herself… only to catch a blurred vision of his rugged features… as felt a tug on her arm… "Adi, chodo mera haath… ye tum kya kar rahe ho… Adi!" (Adi, let go of my hand… hat are you doing… Adi!), she pleaded, as tears threatened once again. But it was as though he had come with a made up mind, determined… and nothing she knew, could stop him… Her pleas soon faded to silent obedience as he sat her down in his car, shutting the door behind… and walked into the driver's sear.

***

All throughout the drive, he remained silent… She too, spoke nothing… afraid of his composure. It seemed as though he were a ticking bomb and one move it would explode… Sneaking occasional glances at him, she noticed the firmness of his features. His unshaven stubble and ruffled hairs indicated a loss of care… He had always been rugged she thought… But that had only brought this mysteriously magnetizing aura to him. His roughness brought out his manly instincts… he was handsome indeed… Shaking her head, she looked out of the window… the sound of waves teasing the sands weaving through the air…

***

She stood staring into his back. His built frame was hidden by the worn denims accompanied by the black of his jacket… his hands rested calmly in his pockets, while the breeze ruffled through his hair. She could feel the intensity build in the air and was getting increasingly afraid of the unspoken between them. "Adi…" she began, but the words left her as she felt herself pushed against a large boulder. Looking straight, she felt her heart pound incessantly against her chest as she faced his fervent gaze…

dc

I've been reading your fanfic in the KGGK forum and all i can say is WOW! Your writing style is fantastic. You desribe each scene with so much depth and emotion. Its fantastic Clap

Pls continue i want to know what will happen. These days the KGGK rape track is so depressing and there was no adi this week Cry
So these MADI fanfics are a source of hope for MADI fans. Seriously Ekta needs to read fanfics like urs for ideas cos she is lacking in that department Confused
