The sun slowly crept in through the window and fell on Ved Oberoi's face. Ved put his hand over his face and rolled over on his side to go back to sleep.
"Ved, wake up," said Anupama, his loving wife, from the door. "You're going to be late for work again." Ved didn't move and Anupama walked over to him. "Wake up," she said as she shook him. "Don't you want to go to work?"
"I go to work everyday," replied Ved. "I think today I want to spend time with my loving wife." He turned to face Anupama and opened his eyes. "I love seeing your beautiful face every morning."
"You're such a flirt," teased Anupama. "Here's your tea," she said putting a cup of tea on the night table. "Drink it and then go shower. I'll put out your clothes for you." She got up to leave and Ved grabbed her hand and pulled her down again.
"Sit with me for a little while."
"Ved, I can't. I have to go make breakfast for everyone. Mom and Dad are probably up by now. They'll be wondering where I am. Let me go."
"No."
"Ved, please!"
"Ok, but only on one condition. You have to give me a kiss first."
"Ok, but you have to close your eyes." Ved closed his eyes and Anupama leaned toward him to kiss him on the cheek. Just then their little puppy walked in and Anupama got an idea. She picked up the puppy and put him in the bed next to Ved. She then walked to the door and watched as the dog started licking Ved's face.
"Anupama, what are you doing?" laughed Ved. All of a sudden the dog let out a bark and Ved opened his eyes. He saw that the dog was in bed with him and that his oh so sweet wife was standing in the doorway laughing at him. Before he could say anything Anupama ran away from the room yelling, "Don't forget to drink your tea!"
She ran down the hall and at the top of the stairs she almost knocked down her father-in-law, Viren. Anupama came to a stop.
"Slow down beta," said Viren as Anupama bent down to touch his feet. "We wouldn't want our precious Anupama to get hurt."
"Sorry Papa," replied Anupama. "Please come downstairs and I'll prepare serve breakfast for you." They both walked down the stairs. Viren walked to the mandir and took God's blessings while Anupama headed to the kitchen to get the breakfast ready.
While Anupama prepared the breakfast, her mother-in-law, Veena, came into the kitchen to help her. "Do you need any help with the breakfast?" she asked.
"No, Mama," Anupama replied while bending down to touch Veena's feet. "It's almost ready. You can go wait at the table with Papa." Veena walked out of the kitchen and sat down at the table with her husband.
Viren was reading the newspaper and when he put it down Veena asked, "So what's happening in the world today?"
"The same as yesterday. Deaths, accidents, killings, business losses, etc, etc. Unfortunately there is never anything good in the newspaper."
"That's because the world loves reading about other people's pain and reading about their happiness would just make them burn with envy."
"You're right. Anyway, let's forget all this and have some breakfast." As he said this Anupama brought out the breakfast and served them.
"You know Veena, we're the luckiest in-laws in the world because we've got a daughter-in-law like Anupama. She's pretty, smart, talented, good mannered and has every good thing that one is looking for in a bahu." Veena nodded as Viren said all this. "She's absolutely perfect. Ved and Anupama have fulfilled all of their responsibilities beautifully, but there's still one responsibility they haven't fulfilled yet." He looked up at Anupama and said, "Beta when are you and Ved going to make us dada and dadi?"
Anupama turned slightly red, embarrassed by what her father-in-law had suggested. Veena noticed and commented, "Viren, stop. You're embarrassing her. You know we have no right to interfere in this matter. This is between the two of them," Veena said trying to make Anupama feel more comfortable.
"I know," replied Viren. I don't have the right to interfere, but I always pray to God that it's soon." Finishing his breakfast, he got up from the table. Anupama brought him his briefcase and he headed off to work. Veena stood up next and left to visit a friend of hers.
As Anupama stood their alone, she thought about what Viren had said. A grandchild was the dream of every parent, but so far Anupama and Ved had been unsuccessful at having a baby. For three years they tried, but no luck. It always made Anupama sad when they got their hopes up, but the reports turned out negative. Ved told her that when the time was right they would have a baby. Anupama still had her doubts. She had a friend who suggested that they consult a fertility specialist, but Anupama was never sure how she would ask Ved to prove his manhood to her. After listening to her in-laws she decided that today would have to be the day to ask him to go to a doctor.
Just then Ved called from upstairs and Anupama went to him. "Jaan, have you seen my wallet?" he asked. "I also can't seem to find my tie, mobile and that blue file I have the other day." Anupama handed him all of these things and he smiled at her. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
"Ved," said Anupama. "I need to talk to you about something."
"Sure. Anything, jaaneman."
"I think we should go see a doctor," said Anupama to Ved. Ved turned around and Anupama saw an expression of shock on his face. "I'm not doubting you," she continued. "I just want to be absolutely sure. I just want to find an explanation for this." She walked over to him and put her hand on his cheek. "Please? For me?" Ved nodded. She reached up, fixed his tie and said, "Breakfast is ready, come downstairs when you're done."
She walked downstairs and laid out breakfast for the two of them. Ved sat down and they had their breakfast in silence. As Ved got up to leave, Anupama said, "Ved, I hope you're not upset at my suggestion to go to a doctor."
Ved turned around and looked at her and said, "I know that whatever you do, you do for the right reasons. If you think going to this doctor will help us have a baby then for your happiness I'm willing to try this." Anupama smiled. "I'd do anything for you Anupama. If you asked for my life, I'd hand it over to you without a question." He then kissed her on the head and left for work.
The amount of love that Ved gave Anupama sometimes made her feel that she was undeserving of it. She noticed a difference in his love for her and her love for him, but never voiced this. She knew that although she loved Ved, it wasn't nearly as much as he loved her. Don't misunderstand her though; Anupama's loyal to her husband and only him.
