There are some people who feel very strongly about privacy issues and I respect their opinions, which is what I assumed was the reason for their being so severe in their criticism of Purab's diary reading. Therefore when I'd read about Jassi deliberately overhearing Armaan-Malika conversations (and not just once) in the updates, and even opening the package from Raj that clearly had Armaan's name on it I expected a tirade - coz that is a clear invasion of privacy. And was very surprised when not only was there not a huge outcry, but also some attempts at justification. I guess in that case the problem was not the diary reading, but the diary reader???

(I personally do not approve of someone reading someone else's diary, just as I do not approve of being "nosey" and listening to private conversations, no matter how much I like the offender. To me they are both wrong -- but very human weaknesses. A huge difference between that and flying planes thru tall buildings and causing mass casualties.)

Well I suppose it is also human nature to somehow overlook or justify the transgressions of those whom we like, and yet be unforgiving when they are committed by someone we hate. Guess that is our human flaw.

If we can forgive "fictional" characters for being "human" why not human beings? Smile

Very well summed up in a point and answred your own question as well. And no,her flaw wasn't overlooked. In fact she was wrong and her manners are awful. That's why she got to know what she did and she doesn't even have a clue that it doesn't even hold good anymore........But just as we don't start to love someone we hate for any reason just on the basis of their good qualities alone ,flaws in our loved ones don't make us hate them instantly......we are naturally more accepting of the flaws of our loved ones and yet for the same type of a flaw in someone else not in our favorite list  can be unacceptable to us..........

Case in point ..........A child hitting another child........If the child who is hitting is yours, justifications  readily spring on your lips (oh ! he's a bit hyper...he didn't mean it...he was just playing etc etc) but if it's ur child who's getting the hit,the other child instantly becomes a mean demon who is uncontrollable & whose parents are the worst of their kind .blah blah blah.....

Wrong Chayya......it is a personal attack when, to defend some fictional character, anyone points fingers at another member......in this case I think Allegra is USING Minnie's justification abt Jassi's behavior to validate Purab's reasons for the diary episode.......

hope that answers ur question.......

Completely agree, Minnie. No one is forcing anyone to love a character based solely on their good qualities. Quite the opposite. If I don't like someone, it does not mean that I must interpret all their actions as "evil" in order to defend my opinion about him or her. As long as I have reasons for not liking them and they remain valid, I have nothing to fear. My point is that sometimes we do not accept our own biases (which we are all entitled to) -- and instead cloak them as rightful indignation. And maybe sometimes we just don't have enough faith and conviction in our own point of view. Why must I be so insecure about my opinion that I feel compelled to interpret an act solely in such a way that it will validate my opinion - regardless of the way I truly feel about the act by itself.

It is ironic, but the whole point was that this character was too good to be acceptable (an argument that had some merit). So if in order to justify my dislike I explain how his actions are wrong, then I am in a way also implying that if he did not do wrong things then I would not hate him. In other words I am myself proving that for me to like someone they cannot be wrong. Yet my initial criticism was he is "too good to be true." I have now fallen into my own trap.

Isn't it just better to admit that I don't like a particular character for the reasons which I truly don't, rather than unnecessarily burden myself with the task of somehow finding explanations of every single behavior of his or her that will make those actions seem unacceptable? And then have the added burden of now either explaining away those same behaviors in other characters that I am sympathetic toward, or to defend my continued liking of such characters, without losing credibility? Why don't we just have some faith in our opinions instead?

My message was in no way meant as a personal attack against Minnie, nor did she misinterpret it as such. Thanks Ides and Minnie Smile
No fictional character will compell me to personally attack anyone, least of all someone I care about.
