Priyamvada who plays the lead Simran on Zee's Meri Doli Tere Angna struggled for four years modelling and doing small character roles and cameos in serials, but she didn't jump at the first lead role that came her way. The actress was selected to play the lead in Parivaar but she turned it down as she wasn't prepared to work for a pittance of a salary. "I wanted to move on from doing character roles, but I rejected Parivaar because I wasn't offered decent money," admits the actress who agreed to play Simran because, "The role is very good and the money part has been taken care of as well."

Can't blame her for being very particular about payment as she like all TV stars will have to suffer never ending hours of shooting, no weekends and very few holidays on a daily basis. Very little money at the end of a hard day provides no motivation.

Unfortunately in reel life Priyamvada isn't a tough cookie as she wants to make her marriage work despite the fact that her husband doesn't love her. But her alter ego Simran is having some fun now as there is romance in the air, "At the moment a romantic track is on, but one doesn't know when bad days will come again," chuckles the pessimist.

Who's in it? Apart from DD veteran Pankaj Berry and one of the most prolific mums on TV today, Madhavi Gokhte, the show stars newcomers Gaurav Khanna and Priyamvada SS in the lead.

The story so far: Set in a rich Punjabi family (one more addition to the ever expanding telly families of Punjabi or Gujarati origin) the story revolves around an eligible bachelor, Ruhaan Oberoi (Gaurav Khanna), who minutes after his marriage to Simran Malhotra (Priyamvada SS) is informed by his photographer brother of the spotting of his presumed-to-be-dead first love, Suhana Dewan (Mansi Deshmukh). The love-sick Ruhaan should have realised himself the flimsiness of the presumption since his girlfriend had apparently disappeared (and not drowned) in knee-deep sea-water while cavorting in one of Mumbai's shallow coasts. Next, Ruhaan pronto calls his bride Simran to a quite corner (in a shaadiwala ghar) and calls their marriage quits even before the bidai ceremony has happened. However, he leaves the onus on her to decide whether to stay on in her maayka and cause a heart attack to her foster father or walk out with him to her new sasural, where she might get the love of all, but not her husband. Simran, of course opts for the second option, or else how will the daily soap chug along.

What's hot? Though the story might seem like another love triangle, it has actually managed to pop forth some interesting twists. Every time you thought of the plot going the predictable way, there's a U-turn with the Ruhaan-Simran relationship oscillating on the extremes of bliss and brickbats. Thankfully, Simran is not another simpering, sacrificing, suffering cut-out. However, that's strictly speaking, as of now.

What's not? If the soap's makers had decided to have the drama revolve around a love triangle then why on earth insert that predictable vamp from the sasural who's out to make the like of the bahu miserable for no apparent reason or provocation. Rajshree Webnath as Sandhya Oberoi, Simran's vampish bhabhi-saas is utterly dispensable.

Should you be watching it? A try won't harm, given this is one of those occasional new options available for couch potatoes inundated with repeats of evening shows in the afternoon slot.

After setting up its prime time band in order with varied family dramas, Zee TV has now shifted its attention to the afternoon band with the new daily soap Meri Doli Tere Angna. Screen visits the sets of the serial...
eri Doli Tere Angna which is set in a Punjabi family is about an orphan girl Simran raised by her uncle and aunt who settles down for an arranged marriage with Ruhaan. But on the day of marriage her husband reveals that he was in love with another girl. Though shocked she remains undeterred and decides to fight the shadow of her husband's past which keeps revisiting her relationship with Ruhaan. Thus starts Simran's journey of trials and tribulations that tests her inner strength and resilience to make her marriage work and win over her husband's love.

Haven't you heard or seen this story before? Doesn't it sound similar to the show's actor-turned-producer Rahul Bhatt's debut serial Heena? "Maybe," says Priyamvada Sawant who plays the protagonist Simran in Meri Doli Tere Angna when you visit the serial's sets at Future Studios. "But how many original stories are there and how original can one get," she counter questions.

No matter the apparent similarity Priyamvada says Meri Doli... is quite different and the relationship conflicts and problems are of a different nature. "It is how you treat and unfold a story that makes all the difference," says the young and dusky actress who may not be a well-known face on TV but has been around. She wanted to do modelling and was studying for her PG diploma is advertising four years ago when she did her first serial. "My first show was Chaunsat Panne for Zee. I was very raw then. Not that I am very good at acting now but I am learning and improving with every show," she admits.

Her modelling dream did come true though. And while doing commercials for products like Horlicks, Lizol, Lifebuoy and Wheel Active, Priyamvada got serials like Bhabhi, Antariksh and Shaadi Street(yet to come on air). But her hunt continued for lead roles. She was selected to play the main lead in Parivaar on Zee. But she rejected the offer because she wasn't happy with the pay packet. "The role was good but the money was not decent enough," says Priyamvada who is happy with the deal she has got for Meri Doli. "I accepted this show because the role is very good and the money part has also been taken care off."

Elaborating on her role she says Simran is a simple and subdued next-door-girl who reacts to the situations and problems in her own way and tries to sail through life's journey. "She goes with the flow and tries to comprehend what happens next and reacts to the situation accordingly," she explains.

If life is not a dream journey for Simran, neither is it for Ruhaan, played by Gaurav Khanna. It's also his first lead role. The Kanpur boy who came to Mumbai for doing his MBA in marketing started doing TV commercials for what he calls "pocket money". "My father insisted that I complete my education before getting into acting," says Gaurav. "Education is very important because it teaches you to be responsible in life and adapt to different situations easily." He even worked for a year in an IT firm. But since ads and ramp shows were happening simultaneously he didn't say no to acting in serials. "I got to play a young and flamboyant character in Siddhant which was produced by BAG Films," says Gaurav who loves watching comedy serials and films besides painting. "TV is one thing I can't live without," he laughs. He also can't live without acting. Since Siddhant was a good experience he didn't say no to a role in Bhabhi. Having done one project with BAG Film, which also produces Kumkum, it was not difficult to get a call from the production house for another project. Thus he landed a role in Kumkum's second-generation characters where he plays Kumkum's and Sumeet's youngest son Sharman.

Though he says Sharman is a hit character with viewers, there is nothing like playing the lead in a serial. If Sharman is street-smart, mischievious and bit irresponsible, Ruhaan of Meri Doli is a serious, straightforward and a no-nonsense boy who is torn between his past and present. "Though he is calm and composed he is always in a dilemma because he clings on to his past. His past includes a former love as well as few other things," says Gaurav who wouldn't reveal anything more about the character and story. If Ruhaan lives in the past, so also Suhana who is Gaurav's past love but returns to give him all sorts of problems and refuses to go away from his life. "Suhana is an ordinary girl who was in love with Ruhaan but disappeared from his life, only to return and get inter-connected in his life again," says Mansi Deshmukh who plays Suhana. "There is some mystery to the character. Though the role is not negative, the character has varied shades."

Meri Doli... is Rahul Bhatt's concept. "The story will revolve around the three main characters but there are some interesting supporting characters as well. After all, a daily can't work without an ensemble of characters that are woven well into the story," says the actor-turned-television-producer. Though Rahul began his acting career on television he finds television acting monotonous. "I have had enough of it. As an actor I am concentrating on films but I am also mesmerized by production. So I would like to create concepts and produce them for television," he adds. In fact, according to Rahul, the very concept of producer has changed. He is no more the man who arranges money and delivers episodes to channel. "Today the producer is a creative person who sits over story narration, script meetings, and development of plotlines and characters," he elaborates on his responsibilities as producer.

And that is because the television scene has changed. "Weeklies had their own charm but dailies are in demand. Weeklies are special and leisurely, dailies are like everyday life, fast and demanding. You have to keep a disaster management strategy in place to meet any emergency. They are not only a huge responsibility but a big challenge too," he concludes

One more bahu on the threshold

Priyamvada S plays the wife, who faces all odds to win her husband's affections in 'Meri Doli Tere Angana'

Homemakers have another reason to forego their afternoon siesta as the new soap 'Meri Doli Tere Angana' (Zee) has gone on air. Priyamvada S, who plays the female lead Simran opposite Gaurav Khanna (Ruhan) in the serial, says that she took to acting by chance. She says, "In college, I was inclined towards modelling. I did a few ad films too. Though I wasn't interested in acting, projects just came my way and I did them for a lark."  Her first show was 'Dil Na Jaane Kyon', which was aired about four years back followed by cameos in 'Bhabhi', 'Shakti' and 'Antariksh'.

How she bagged the lead role in 'Meri Doli…' is an interesting story. She narrates, "I had auditioned for the lead role in Miditech's 'Parrivar—Kartavya Ki Pariksha'. But I wasn't happy with the role offered, so I decided not to take it. But as luck would have it, some Zee officials happened to see the auditions and I was offered this show."

In the show, Priyamvada plays a simple Punjabi girl, whose dreams of an ideal marriage are shattered when she learns that her husband Ruhan is in love with another girl. "It's very interesting how she tackles the situation with dignity and tries to win her husband's affections," she says. She also admits that the role is not novel. "This situation is common. But how one deals with them is what makes it different. My effort will be to make it look as unique and believable as possible," she shares.

Priyamvada adds that the show being positioned in the afternoon slot doesn't discourage her. She states optimistically, "Of course, it would be great to see it on the prime slot. But then there is an audience for the afternoon slot too."

Speaking of Rahul Bhatt, the producer of the serial, she says "Rahul is cool. He's not the typical producer. In fact, he gives us a free hand. It's good to work with someone supportive and motivated."

Right now, life is one hectic schedule for Priyamvada as she lives in Dombivli and travels to the western suburbs for shooting. She says, "I am staying with my relatives. But the erratic schedule is killing. I miss my modelling days where the work pace was not as hectic, money was great and it was fun all the way."

That doesn't mean that Priyamvada isn't serious about acting. "Now that I have taken it up, I aim to be a good actor. I intend to do good work and prove my mettle," she signs off.

Taking a cue from Bollywood, which has now become proficient in copying and lifting stories from Hollywood flicks, now the Tellywood is doing the same. Instead of looking to Hollywood, the Tellywood has been 'stealing' stories and ideas from Bollywood!

Starting right with Ekta Kapoor everyone, including Aroona Irani is busy in this notorious business. Watch any Ekta Kapoor daily soap these days and you will find traces of Bollywood stories in them. The recent one is 'Kasautii Zindagii Kay', which clearly resembles the storyline of 'Mohabbatein'. As for Aroona Irani's 'Doli Saja Ke', it is almost similar to 'Saajan Ka Ghar'.
The latest one, which is yet to be aired, is Rahul Bhatt's 'Meri Doli Tere Angana'. This serial is very similar to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'!

When asked about the last serial, producer Rahul Bhatt said, "As I am from the filmy background you can expect my serials to be filmy too." This clearly gives an idea why the story of 'Meri Doli Tere Angana' is so similar to the Hindi movie.

"I am playing Suhana, who is the love interest of Gaurav Kapoor aka Ruhan but something mysterious happens and they fail to unite. Instead, Ruhan has to marry to Priyamvada aka Simran. However, soon Ruhan begins his journey in search of his lost love Suhana", says Mansi Deshmukh revealing that the role of Suhana is similar to the role of Salman Khan aka Sameer who has to leave
Aishwarya for some reason. On the other hand, the role of Ruhan aka Gaurav looks similar to Aishwarya's who tries to find Sameer!

It seems that a new trend is emerging in Tellywood. But this is certainly not a good one as stealing stories and characters from Bollywood and making daily soaps out of them certainly cannot be called creative. Now, we wonder if this pirating of ideas is due to the fight for TRPs or has originality disappeared somewhere?
