Many parts of India is on fire (though not so much covered by media) because of the land distribution on the basis of SEZ (Special Economic Zone) There was Nandigram in WestBengal, now Asansol. Nagpur farmers have also staged a protest against this. Police opened fire on the farmers in Nandigram but nothing was done after that inspite of huge protest from the intellectual community in Kolkata. There was huge protest from every quarter but nothing really came out of it. Media slowly forgot about it and the news time was taken over by AbhiAsh wedding. Today there was a huge protest in Asansol, and farmers were beaten up. They even beat up women and kids.

Protests in India have ceased to be impromptu

There is always a political angle to every protest, that is a given, unless and untill you know the local politics you cannot say if the protest is genuine or a political power play

I will give a benefit of the doubt to the SEZ(although that too is politically motivated), that atleast brings some upliftment to that particular area

Govt. and Media don't care; most of the public is unaware. The people who are gonna suffer, are gonna suffer, and then go to their homes with nothing in hand. The cycle goes on!

I agree to the local politics factor, that you need to understand the local politics to understand why the protests have taken place. But the protests in WestBengal was started off by farmers since the land meant for harvesting was given away in the name of industrialization. Progress and development is good, but its a tricky process and when implemented for the very first time lot of issues need to be considred. Protests of anykind these days be it he docs again reservation or the SEZ effected farmers, they all are curbed in a wrong way. Poluce hits them, fires on them. In a democracy this is really uncalled for.

i dont much care for SEZs. aside from the land grab opportunities these present for politicians, it gives businesses and people in certain areas an unfair tax and infrastucture advantage over others while creating different tiers of policy. if they have to give away tax sops, these should be distributed across everyone.

other words, why shouldn't all of india be a special economic zone? if it's good for the economy and would raise tax revenues in the long-run , as some argue, then why not have all of india operate on those principles of minimum bureaucracy and good infrastucture? do the ambanis and the other tycoons really need more incentive than the stocks they already own in their own companies to make the economy grow?
