Your opinion on SEZ

Many parts of India is on fire (though not so much covered by media) because of the land distribution on the basis of SEZ (Special Economic Zone) There was Nandigram in WestBengal, now Asansol. Nagpur farmers have also staged a protest against this. Police opened fire on the farmers in Nandigram but nothing was done after that inspite of huge protest from the intellectual community in Kolkata. There was huge protest from every quarter but nothing really came out of it. Media slowly forgot about it and the news time was taken over by AbhiAsh wedding. Today there was a huge protest in Asansol, and farmers were beaten up. They even beat up women and kids.

i dont much care for SEZs. aside from the land grab opportunities these present for politicians, it gives businesses and people in certain areas an unfair tax and infrastucture advantage over others while creating different tiers of policy. if they have to give away tax sops, these should be distributed across everyone.

other words, why shouldn't all of india be a special economic zone? if it's good for the economy and would raise tax revenues in the long-run , as some argue, then why not have all of india operate on those principles of minimum bureaucracy and good infrastucture? do the ambanis and the other tycoons really need more incentive than the stocks they already own in their own companies to make the economy grow?
