BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On July 17, Walt Disney Records releases a physical CD single for the surefire hit "What Time Is It" in anticipation of the soundtrack event of the summer, High School Musical 2. "What Time Is It" marks the first commercial single to be released by Walt Disney Records in over a decade. The anthemic track reunites Corbin Bleu ("Chad"), Monique Coleman ("Taylor"), Zac Efron ("Troy"), Lucas Grabeel ("Ryan"), Vanessa Hudgens ("Gabriella") and Ashley Tisdale ("Sharpay") – the original cast of High School Musical, the Disney Channel Original Movie that gave rise to the #1 best-selling album of 2006. The physical CD single will include a fold-out poster and a link to a sneak peek of footage from High School Musical 2.
"What Time Is It" was written by Matthew Gerrard (Kelly Clarkson, Hilary Duff, Jessica Simpson) and Robbie Nevil (Destiny's Child, Melissa Etheridge, Stevie Wonder). Gerrard and Nevil penned several tracks for the High School Musical soundtrack – including the iconic "We're All in This Together" and "Start of Something New" – in addition to songs on several Walt Disney Records soundtracks including Hannah Montana, The Cheetah Girls 2 and Jump In!, all of which debuted in the Top 5 on Billboard's Top 200 album chart. The quadruple-platinum soundtrack to High School Musical was the #1 album of 2006 (Nielsen SoundScan) and the first-ever TV movie soundtrack to peak at the #1 position on Billboard's Top 200. The soundtrack produced 6 gold singles and shattered numerous records across the Billboard charts, including an unprecedented 9 original songs from the soundtrack on the Hot 100 chart.
In the contemporary musical sequel, High School Musical 2, the Wildcats are back and this time school's out and East High School hoops star Troy Bolton, A-student Gabriella Montez and the rest of the "Wildcats" are getting ready for a fun summer vacation. All that changes when scheming drama queen Sharpay Evans uses her dad's connections to get Troy a job at their ritzy country club – and a chance at a college basketball scholarship. The catch? He'll have to turn his back on his friends and pair up with Sharpay in a musical extravaganza for the club's annual talent show. But when Gabriella and the Wildcats start making plans without Troy, he must decide where his loyalties truly lie.
