If the invention is not by chance, then it's almost always driven by necessity. Even in cases of chance discoveries, it's the necessity which gives the required impetus to enquire further to know the exact cause. The need or want may be explicit or latent but only if it's there, the market will try to come up with something to satisfy that want.
