 From the TOI:

View : Aishwarya is popularly known not as Ms Rai but as Ash or Aishwarya, her first name, unlike Abhishek, whose claim to fame is largely because of his family name. Ms Rai as the new Mrs Bachchan has in fact added value to her brand equity by adopting the even bigger brand name of the Bachchan family. You could call it a double-whammy of sorts, the twinning of two big brands, Aishwarya and Bachchan holding far more potential brand recall than before.

Counter view: Aishwarya Rai has chosen to change her name to Aishwarya Bachchan, presumably to capitalise on the famous Bachchan brand. On the other hand, Priyanka Gandhi makes it a point to use her married surname and calls herself Priyanka Vadra, perhaps in an attempt at what might be called reverse brand-building.. The point that might be raised and not just by feminists is whether people need to change their last names after marriage. Indeed, it could be asked if people need a second name at all.

lonk to an old topic with the same subject: http://india-forums.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=199168

So what are your views?

1) Do we need a surname at all?

2) Do females need to change their maiden name after marriage?

3) Is this just another rule for @just women@ in the male dominated society

4) What do you think of ppl like Sanjay Leela bhansali who insist on having their mother's name as part of theirs?

5) This one only for all married females: Did you change your maiden name after marriage?

I think it should all really be upto the woman herself... is she wants to retain her maiden name then she should and if she doesn't then change it...

Yes! I like my sur name sooooooooooo much, infact I'm very proud about it,there used to be a famous Telugu poet from family and he is very popular and So many know that sur name well!

I write my sur name with my name everywhere and all make fun of me,will you continue writing it even after your marriage! I feel bad about this! But when we go into another family and we are into their family we need to change the  name accordingly, because we are bahu's of that family! So there is nothing wrong about changing it!It takes time to adjust to that new sur name! Its just my view!!

Its a tradition!

Good sensitive crazy individuals! However its his name!

Change in surname after marriage for a girl was generally taken for granted. Though nowadays many prefer to keep their maiden name after marriage. It should depend upon each individual and their decision. No name change should be done forcefully.

I want to know where a woman keeps her maiden name after marriage, in future when there are children, whose surname should they take, in most cases it will be papas right?

I have preferred not to use a surname even before marriage Wink   Dont see why I should go flaunting my family name, when I got one good enough, selected by my family, which can do the work as well.

But, it is a matter of individual choice and either which way, there is nothing right or wrong about it.
