I don't need to show skin to prove my acting skills: Kulraj Kaur
The beautiful and voluptous Sardarni is a management graduate from
Bangalore University! But before she could realise it, the glamour bug bit
her. Soon, Kulraj was doing a stint with Kishore Namit Kapoor.
"Actually, Kapoor met me in Bangalore and suggested that I join his classes.
Before that, I was getting many offers for films down South.
So I thought that I might as well put my best foot forward. Kapoor's
inputs helped me a lot to loosen up. Importantly, I learnt how to face
the camera, learn what the field is, plus what dialogue delivery and
voice modulation is all about. I am here in Mumbai for the last 18 months.
I never imagined things would start happening for me so fast. I am
honoured that Zee TV chose me to play the central role in my debut
appearance itself," she says.
Parental resistance? "To be honest, thoda bahut tha. My parents were
worried how I would manage in Mumbai all alone. But it settled down. They
realised that I wanted to pursue acting as a career and knew that I
could take care of myself. Slowly, they relented. Today, they often come
down for a few days to check whether I am sailing smoothly," she laughs.
How did Kareena Kareena happen? Says Kulraj, "It's sort of landed in my
lap. Soon after my stint with Kapoor got over, I got a call for this
role. It's not a 'Kkusum' or 'Jassi' type of role which are quite
plastic, linear and straitjacketed I feel. Hence, I signed on the dotted line
almost immediately." The serial is believed to be on the lines of the
evergreen Golmaal; Kulraj is said to be playing the female Amol Palekar.
"If that's a compliment, I wouldn't mind it. But no, the serial is not
similar to Golmaal. It may seem like that initially, but it's gonna
look entirely different as it progresses. There are lots of twists and
turns in the story."
Does she feel sometimes that she is in a wrong place, especially after
the news about TV and film actresses being in flesh trade broke out? It
did jolt quite a few. But she says, "I don't think so. It takes two
hands to clap. But yes, I was a bit surprised when I heard that even TV
actresses have got into this. I thought that girls entered television
instead of films, only because they thought indecent trade and proposals
exist in films only," she says.
Man in her life? Is the sardarni chick dating anybody? "I am single and
happy. I am not mingling, if that's what you're asking. I don't want to
be written about in gossip columns," she claims.
Any filmy aspirations? She blushes and says, "I am open to films. I am
sure people will offer me roles, because my role has lots of shades."
So how's she marketing herself? Meeting film producers, directors? "As
of now, I am not approaching them. But eventually, why not? I mean, how
would they know who is Kulraj and what does she want? I am talented and
I know I won't disappoint," she replies with a straight face.
