"THE GAME OF LOVE AND UNITY" - ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 Official Song

THIS IS IT, ONE BIG GAME, THAT YOU CANNOT MISS

NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE – EVERYONE'S ON THE LIST

THIS IS THE GAME OF LIFE AND WE ALL ARE ONE

(SO COME ALONG)

These are but a sample of the lyrics conceptualised and performed by a trio of Caribbean artistes who have fused their talents to produce the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 Official Song, launched in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.

After the release of the tournament's Official Song titled The Game of Love and Unity, the voices of Jamaican-born Shaggy, Barbadian entertainer Rupee and Trinidadian Faye-Ann Lyons are filling the airwaves across the Caribbean and the world. After months of planning and creation, ICC CWC WI 2007 Inc. proudly unveiled the signature Event song which is expected to be on the lips of thousands visitors come next March and April.

"The Official Song has had the input of a number of Caribbean and CWC stakeholders and I think the Event and the region will have a song of which they can be proud," said ICC CWC 2007 Marketing Manager, Damon Leon.

"We have been looking forward to launching the song to the world and embracing it as part of the spirit and identity of ICC Cricket World Cup 2007."

Leon also disclosed that "the release of the song will herald a burst of promotional activity as we move towards the tournament." On behalf of the artistes, entertainer Rupee stated: "It is a pleasure working on such a magnificent project. We are going to showcase the best of the Caribbean to the world, including our diverse creative talent and our hospitality when we host the tournament."

A host of executives from the music and recording industry, CWC stakeholders, officials from the Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana Local Organising Committees (LOC), sponsor and media representatives attended the song launch. The evening was indeed an indication that ICC CWC 2007 would not only bring sporting action to the world but also a display of Caribbean creativity as well. Guests were afforded the opportunity to mingle prior to the start of the launch which comprised a live performance of The Game of Love and Unity, several speeches and a fashion segment showcasing Official ICC CWC 2007 merchandise.

Rupee is the lead composer of the ICC CWC 2007 Official Song. Driven by his unique musical style which has created hits such as Jump and Tempted to Touch, the popular composer and performer brings a blend of urban-influenced Caribbean music to this historic track.

Internationally-acclaimed artiste and Grammy Award winner, Shaggy, is best known for his hit singles Oh Carolina, It wasn't me, Angel and many others. Shaggy has been one of the biggest crossover successes in dancehall reggae and brings his inimitable, distinctive style to the Cricket World Cup's Official Song.

Faye-Ann Lyons is rapidly establishing herself as a musical force to be reckoned with following her Trinidad and Tobago Road March winning song Display. She became only the third woman in the competition's history to win this prestigious award and has used this as the platform to launch an escalating solo career. With crowd and club favourites such as Freedom, Lose your way and Send Dem, Faye Ann brings her energetic and powerful voice to CWC's Official Song.

Important Note: To hear the music play you we will need a media player of some description. It is recomended that you use Microsoft Windows Media Player to listen to the ICC CWC 2007 Offical Song. You can download Windows Media Player by clicking on this link.

Yuvraj leads India to series win

N.Ananthanarayanan in Visakhapatnam | Saturday, 17 February , 2007, 17:27

Yuvraj Singh struck 95 not out to steer India to a seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the final one-dayer on Saturday and help clinch the series 2-1. | Scorecard |

Chamara Silva stroked 107 not out to pull Sri Lanka out of early trouble and reach 259 for seven in the 47-overs-a-side game after the start was delayed because of dew on the ground.

However, Yuvraj, recently back from injury, shared in an unbroken 145-run fourth wicket partnership with Saurav Ganguly, who was 58 not out, to power the hosts to 263 for three in just 41 overs in reply.

Yuvraj, who made a comeback only recently after suffering a knee ligament tear in October, played forceful shots to render the Sri Lankan bowlers helpless on a good batting pitch.

Ganguly's second fifty of the four-match series also gave the former captain, who had returned to the crease after opening then going off for treatment on a thigh strain, the man-of-the-series award. Images

The 21-year-old Robin Uthappa smashed 52 from 37 balls to set the tone for the chase with opener Virender Sehwag, who made 46.

Sehwag was run out to a direct hit by wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara at the non-striker's end as he walked to complete a single but Yuvraj and Ganguly then took over.

Sri Lanka made a match of it only because of Silva's heroics.

The 27-year-old, playing in only his 14th match since his debut in 1999, rescued Sri Lanka after Indian seamers led by Ajit Agarkar's double strike reduced them to 56 for four in the 13th over.

Silva added 68 runs for the fifth wicket with Tillakaratne Dilshan (28), 41 for the next with Russel Arnold (22) before putting on a racy 64 runs for the seventh wicket with Farveez Maharoof (28).

The last seven overs fetched 76 runs with Silva targeting struggling off spinner Harbhajan Singh and then scoring freely against pacemen Zaheer Khan and Shanthakumaran Sreesanth.

Silva, declared man of the match, had been out of favour until a strong return on the New Zealand tour late last year, where he hit 152 not out in the second test at Wellington to help level the series 2-2.

The victory boosted India ahead of the World Cup starting in West Indies on March 13. Both India and Sri Lanka are in Group B with Bangladesh and Bermuda.

Indian team leaves for World Cup

PTI

Mumbai: The Indian team led by Rahul Dravid left here on Wednesday night for the World Cup with high hopes of regaining cricket's showpiece title after a gap of nearly a quarter of a century.

Meet the fifteen-member team

The squad was seen off at the Mumbai airport by officials of the Cricket Board, well-wishers and fans.

The team is scheduled to reach Jamaica on Thursday and commence their preparations for their opening Group B encounter on March 17 against Bangladesh after playing warm-up games against The Netherlands (March 6) and Cup hosts West Indies (March 9) at Trelawny.

The league opener is slated to be held at India's happy hunting Test ground - Queen's Park Oval in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. India are to play their other two Group B ties at this venue on March 19 (v Bermuda) and March 23 (v Sri Lanka).

The top two teams from each of the four preliminary groups are to advance to the Super Eight stage commencing on March 27.

India have won the game's biggest prize once in 1983 when the tournament was held in England.

The country had reached the semi-finals of the event on two more occasions - in 1987 and 1996, both in the sub continent - and were the losing finalists four years ago in South Africa.

The World Cup squad: Rahul Dravid (captain), Sachin Tendulkar (vice-captain), Virender Sehwag, Sourav Ganguly, Robin Uthappa, Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Kaarthick, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar, Munaf Patel, Irfan Pathan and S Sreesanth. Coach: Greg Chappell.

Australia's chances still good, says Chappell

Mumbai: Indian coach and former Australia captain Greg Chappell said on Tuesday Australia's chances of defending their World Cup title should not be written off despite losing their last five one-day internationals.

"I wouldn't read too much into it," Chappell told a news conference ahead of the March 13-April 28 tournament in West Indies.

Australia lost 2-0 in the home tri-series finals to England and 3-0 in New Zealand.

"If anything, it just shows that New Zealand are a good side, and shows that England have made some progress in recent times," he said.

"They have key players coming back to the team that went to New Zealand. This will just have made them hungrier and a bit more determined to play well. I would have preferred if they won every game and went to the West Indies and maybe were overconfident."

Captain Rahul Dravid agreed with his coach and said that although Australia start as favourites, it would be a tight competition.

"They (Australia) have got a good one-day record over the past two to three years and you can't dismiss that in one week or two weeks of cricket," Dravid said of Australia's string of five defeats.

"I am sure when they get some of their key players back they will be hungry and keen to perform."

Chappell, whose two-year tenure as India coach ends after the World Cup, felt his side had achieved peak form following back-to-back one-day series victories at home over West Indies and Sri Lanka.

"We are in as good a position as we hope to be. At this stage, the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle has fallen into place," he said.

"I think we go with some confidence and plenty of hope. We have got cover for pretty much all of the key players and the key positions, we've got flexibility."

India, the 1983 World Cup winners, are in Group B with 1996 champions Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bermuda.

Harbhajan enjoying bowling in powerplay overs

Mumbai: Star off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is enjoying the unusual challenge of bowling in the early powerplay overs and looking forward to continuing his containing role at next month's World Cup.

"I don't think many spinners have been bowling during powerplays the way I have," the 26-year-old told Reuters ahead of the team's departure for the Caribbean.

"I've been bowling almost four overs in the period in every game but I am enjoying it. There needs to be someone to take the responsibility and do well in that situation."

India, the 1983 winners, will be in Group B with 1996 champions Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bermuda.

Harbhajan has received criticism in recent months after collecting 19 wickets at an average of 43.26 in his last 23 ODIs.

But he said that was down to his dual role of containing while the fielders are inside the circle plus wicket-taking.

"My role changes according to the situation," said Harbhajan.

"If we get early wickets then I bowl between the 20th and 40th overs. It means we have built pressure with early wickets and I can be aggressive later."

In recent weeks, India have claimed back-to-back one-day series victories over West Indies and Sri Lanka that coincided with the return to form of left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan.

"In those cases I bowled three to four overs in powerplays and I was given the ball to try and contain," said Harbhajan. "If the batsmen take their chances and you get a wicket that's a bonus.

"Once those overs are gone I am trying to take as many wickets as possible with the field spread. Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't."

Stop waiting for Shoaib, Asif, Miandad tells Pakistan

Karachi: Former captain Javed Miandad has told Pakistan to stop waiting for Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif and go into next month's World Cup without the two pace bowlers.

"With so much uncertainty over their availability, I think it is best Pakistan forgot about them and devised a new strategy with more spinners," Miandad told Reuters on Wednesday.

"Why waste time on something which is not available?".

Shoaib and Asif are receiving treatment in London for their knee and elbow injuries and will not be leaving for the Caribbean on Thursday with the rest of the squad.

The pair have also yet to take the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) official doping tests, said media manager Pervez Mir.

Shoaib and Asif tested positive last October for the banned substance nandrolone but a PCB appeals panel cleared them of a doping offence and set aside their bans in December.

Pakistan have also yet to receive permission from the World Cup technical committee to replace injured all-rounder Abdul Razzaq with Azhar Mahmood.

A veteran of six World Cups, Miandad said Pakistan would fare better in the competition with two specialist spinners.

"They have leg-spinner Danish Kaneria in the side and they should also include left-armer Abdul Rehman," he said.

"They can be threatening on slow West Indian pitches."

Rehman played recently in South Africa but has not been picked in the 15-man World Cup squad.

Pakistan will be in Group D with hosts West Indies, Zimbabwe and Ireland.

It's painful to miss World Cup, says Shoaib

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Disgruntled Pakistan paceman Shoaib Akhtar Thursday said his failure to make it to the World Cup in the Caribbean had caused him great pain
"I am going through hell. I can't describe it in words what it means to miss an event like the World Cup," Akhtar told AFP, a week after he was withdrawn from Pakistan's squad on fitness grounds.
The 31-year-old paceman failed to recover from knee and hamstring injuries which ruled him out of the mega event starting with a match between Pakistan and the West Indies in Jamaica on March 13.
"I have been waiting for this event for two years and to play in a cricket-loving region like the Caribbean was my dream. Not being able to play in the World Cup is like taking all my dreams away." Akhtar said he had played only one match in the West Indies in 2000 and was anxious to play because every fast bowler wanted to do well in the Caribbean, which is known as a fast bowlers' paradise. "I am badly missing the atmosphere," he added. Akhtar's new-ball partner Mohammad Asif was also pulled out of the 15-man squad due to an elbow injury, badly hitting Pakistan's chances in the World Cup. The PCB claimed that the duo were withdrawn on fitness grounds.
But several newspapers reported that private tests, carried out while Akhtar and Asif were having their injuries reassessed in England, revealed they still had banned substances in their systems.
Pakistan had to withdraw them from the Champions Trophy in India in October last year after both tested positive for banned steroid nandrolone. Akhtar was subsequently banned for two years and Asif for one year by an anti-doping tribunal in November. A month later both were exonerated by an appeal committee.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) challenged the ban overturn in the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which is yet to announce a date for the hearing.
Akhtar said it was not new that people doubted his injury.
"I have always played to the best of my abilities but people have doubted my integrity. My injuries are always doubted as if I am feigning it and I always had to prove that I am unfit.
"People don't understand. Why would I not the play the game I love? I wanted to be in the Caribbean and I wanted to help my team win but unfortunately my injury forced me to miss the big event and the chance will never come again," he said. "Now my best wishes are with the team. This Pakistan team has the capability to play.... I pray that my team achieves the best result in this World Cup." Akhtar said he would start training once the knee injury healed in the next two weeks.
"My next target is the Twenty20 World Cup and then we have two good home series against South Africa and Australia, so I will gear up for them," he said.

Ganguly likely to miss warm-up match

March 9, 2007

India will not want to risk aggravating Sourav Ganguly's ankle injury ahead of their first match on against Bangladesh on March 17

Sourav Ganguly is likely to miss India's warm-up match against West Indies after injuring his ankle at net practice the day before.

The team management may not wish to take a risk and play a half-fit Ganguly when India is scheduled to play its first match of World Cup - against Bangladesh in Trinidad - in less than ten days time.

India play West Indies in their second warm-up match today at the Trelawny Stadium in Jamaica.

Meanwhile India's other opener, Virender Sehwag, has said that the backing he received from Rahul Dravid to be included in the World Cup squad was a huge morale booster and he would like to repay the captain's faith in him by scoring plenty of runs in the tournament.

"I now want to justify the faith in me and live up to the expectations," Sehwag was reported as saying in AFP. "I was confident of staging a comeback and the time I spent away from international cricket helped me get my focus back."

Earlier Dilip Vengsarkar, the chairman of selectors, had said that Sehwag had been selected on Dravid's insistence. "When I was leading India, I never got the team I wanted and I didn't want Rahul to go through the same," Vengsarkar had said. "He insisted on having Sehwag and that made the difference."

Sehwag was included despite scoring just 273 runs in 15 one-day games, including an unimpressive 19 off 23 balls against Sri Lanka a day before the squad was picked on February 12.

However he appeared to regain form with an aggressive 46 in the final match against Sri Lanka five days later. "I'm quite happy with my form now. It's getting better and better with every session in the nets. I want to stay longer at the crease."

Grateful Sehwag promises to deliver

AFP

Swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag has promised to justify captain Rahul Dravid's backing with a bucketful of runs for India at the ICC CWC 2007.

Chairman of Indian selectors Dilip Vengsarkar said last week the struggling 28-year-old had been picked for the ICC CWC after Dravid insisted on his inclusion for the showpiece event.

A grateful Sehwag says he is determined to prove his worth when India open their campaign against Bangladesh in Trinidad on March 17.

"The backing I've received from Dravid has been a huge morale booster," Sehwag told reporters ahead of Friday's final warm-up match against the West Indies here.

"I now want to justify the faith in me and live up to the expectations."

Sehwag was included despite scoring just 273 runs in 15 one-dayers, including an unimpressive 19 off 23 balls against Sri Lanka a day before the squad was picked on February 12.

However he appeared to regain form with a typically aggressive 46 in the final match against the Sri Lankans five days later.

"I was confident of staging a comeback and the time I spent away from international cricket helped me get my focus back," he said.

"I did a lot of meditation.

"I'm quite happy with my form now. It's getting better and better with every session in the nets. I want to stay longer at the crease."

Sehwag, the only Indian to compile a triple century in Test cricket, has scored 4,833 runs from 167 one-dayers with seven centuries.

He is also a useful offspin bowler with 72 one-day wickets, giving Dravid an option of an additional spinner.

Sehwag said he was not concerned over being removed as vice-captain on the tour of South Africa in December-January because of his poor form.

"I was not expecting the vice-captaincy when it was given to me, nor was I disappointed when it was taken away," he said.

Senior pro Sachin Tendulkar, who voluntarily stepped down as India captain in 2000 to concentrate on his batting, was elevated as vice-captain to Dravid for the ICC CWC.
