Rewriting Rajasthan's history important

PTI | January 03, 2007 | 18:34 IST

Brushing aside Congress' apprehension of Hindutva agenda in the academic curriculum, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on Wednesday hailed Rajasthan's Bharatiya Janata Party government for its move to rewrite the state's history.

It said that the move would delete 'unscrupulous facts' mentioned in textbooks against heroes and leaders.

"History books need improvement and correction as there are a number of citiations where Maharana Pratap, Guru Govind Singh and ex-rulers are being misquoted or defamed in the school and college curriculum," RSS' kshetriya seva pramukh Moolchand Soni told reporters.

RSS has constituted a committee called the Itihas Sankalan Samiti in the state and at the central level and the Rajasthan government's steps towards a campaign on Apni Dharti, Apne Log (our land, our people) was in the right direction, he said.

The Congress alleged on Tuesday that the ruling BJP was trying to tamper with historical facts of the state in a bid to enforce its Hindutva agenda.

"The re-writing of history of Rajasthan's villages is irrelevant and unauthentic. We will not let the state became a testing laboratory for Hindutva agenda," state Congress chief B D Kalla said in a statement.

Rajasthan's Education Minister G S Tiwari announced on Sunday that his department would soon compile historical and cultural facts related to over 41,000 villages for new textbooks.

Ouch
A common phenomenon in India...
The BJP/RSS/Shiv Sena ruled states generally glorify the$ pro Hindutva leaders and their movement....
While the Congress/Anti BJP parties do exactly the opposite...

But I guess Indian kids are smart enought to know the truth... or rather ascertain the facts themselves.... Rather than believing the half baked truth fed to them in their History textbooks....

Nice topic Sowmyaa!
I guess the situation in Rajasthan holds good for several other leaders and rulers all over India.

I wonder the same holds good for Chinese and other ancient civilizations as well. What are the criteria that make /prove historians unbiassed? What is the authenticity of something that happened so long ago? Who decides who to glorify and for what?  Withought knowing answers to these questions, how do we edit our history books?  Just like the IF LOL rules, one can definitely prevent BASHING of certain historic figures if that is prevalent!

On a lighter note, I always wonder exactly how BUSH will be going in the history one day LOL LOL LOL

History has always been written by the victors. The Congress has done it in the past, RSS/BJP are doing it now.

I very well know what BJP/RSS stand for, do we want to believe in what the congress has written into the history considering their trackrecordWink

I would be very curious to find out what BJP/RSS write in the history books about 1948 and 1962

Well... Nothing anti Congress or anti Cong leaders.. Because Nehru and gang are considered highly respected historical figures... and the BJP maintain that respect... Even if it is pseudo respect...

The only manipulations tht they do is regaring religious issues...

They leave no stone unturned in portraying Muslim Rulers including Aurangazeb and Babar as ruthless and inhuman... And glorigying the Hindu Kings who fought against them... They have even inserted things saying Hindus were a benevolent lot to let Muslim "foreigners" into their land and to make it their home.... and certain communally inciting things like that...

Regardless of the element of truth... I dont think such incitings things should be included in textbooks...

Coming to 1948 and 1962 and 65 and 71.... Not much other than that there was a war... India managed to keep half of Kashmir while the Pak army occupied the rest... There was a war.. India almost went upto Lahore but had to come bck since annexing foreign territory is unconstitutional...India helped Banglaesh gain independence...India army fought bravely but the Chinese army was too strong for them...

Thats it... No radical RSS ideology is propagated... Just that the BJP/RSS want more emphasis to be laid on India's Hindu past than India's Muslim past since they are hell bent on protraying Muslims as foreigners who settled in India...

Not that I was around so long ago, but INVASION and destruction of temples and similar monuments speaks volumes about whether Certain rulers were settlers or invaders. Settlers are only those rulers who peacefully co-existed.
