POP DIARIES
#DeepikaPadukone's fierce introduction scene will leave you amazed with her beauty and strong screen presence.#RanveerSingh is deadly, ferocious, scary & his acting prowess knows no limits. He makes us believe that if #AlauddinKhilji was alive, he would've been like his portrayal.
Saw Padmavat last night in a spl preview; fantastic film, a must watch. Ranveer Singh is outstanding as Khilji and @deepikapadukone looks stunning. As for Karni Sena goons, they should watch it with pop corn in a prison cell!! #Padmaavat
Best actor award 2018 (every single one out there) belongs to @RanveerOfficial - what a performance #mindblown
KRITIKA KAMRA
#Padmaavat has been watched. Mind has been blown.Yet again.Drama/less drama..I just LOVE the world that #SanjayLeelaBansali creates-the art, costume design, production design, music.I'm a fan of his http://cinema.No matter how long his films are I watch them awestruck.URVI PARIKH

And hatts off to his stellar cast - @deepikapadukone, @shahidkapoor and @RanveerOfficial! Each one shines in their roles.. And they together leave you speechless! #Padmaavat
.@deepikapadukone as Rani Padmavati is all things regal. Her performance truly showcases the Rajputi taakat! Absolutely loved her in each frame.. her chemistry with @shahidkapoor is on point! They converse with their eyes and you cannot stop admiring them... #Padmaavat
Raja Rawal Ratan Singh is brilliant in certain scenes and @shahidkapoor plays that role with absolute panache. The climax scene with Khilji will leave you ready eyed! Indeed another role in Shahid's kitty that shall be remembered for years to come!
.@jimSarbh and @aditiraohydari have a small but an impactful part to play in #Padmaavat. Love their characters.
But it is @RanveerOfficial who shines for me in #Padmaavat. Some of his scenes have me gooseflesh! That stare, that clap and that madness! I hated him through the movie. One couldn't predict what next will Khilji do.. Exactly what a villain's role should evoke...
He was as beastly as he could get! RS your expressions in #KhaliBali are MINDBLOWING! Everytime one thinks you are flawless as an actor in the character you play, you surprise me with the next one. Khilji is surely going to be an iconic character in history of Bollywood.
Overall, #Padmaavat was an experience! And the Rajput valour and pride that #SanjayLeelaBhansali has shown in this film, I wouldn't have learnt off given the current things the so called Rajput groups' are resorting to! Thank you for showing us the truth SLB!
RAVI KAPOOR
Watched @filmpadmaavat & was impressed by @RanveerOfficial's roaring act, @shahidkapoor's Rajputana but it was @deepikapadukone who BLEW ME AWAY by her rock-solid performance. Last scene made me teary-eyed... #Padmaavat is a beautiful (& powerful) film. Recommended watch! The Shri Rajput Karni Sena can go and eat cake. And the Rajputs of Rajasthan can sleep peacefully tonight in their ancestral palaces, forts, castles and havelis. For the maverick Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has been through the fires with this one, has made sure that his divisive period drama Padmavati, sorry Padmaavat, has kept the "Pride of the Rajputs intact after all the sound and dust settles at the end of his 2.44 minute work of art, music, literature and history.
If Bhansali was hell-bent on creating mischief and controversy by wickedly and wantonly distorting Rajput history as was widely suspected by the fringe caste groups, then the filmmaker got his act together after being rapped on the knuckles by the Censor Board. For what he has produced is nothing short of a masterpiece. Smacking of the grandeur with which he treated his earlier films, with a gripping screenplay, stunning visuals, stirring romance, war sequences meant not only to make you forget his earlier historical romance Bajirao Mastani, but also Hollywood's epics like Troy.
Does the story need to be repeated? Not after the Karni Sena went to town again and again with the legend of Rani Padmini, the beautiful princess of Singhal who marries Maharawal Ratan Singh of Mewar and becomes the object of desire of the all-conquering, power-obsessed Mughal sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi. It's amazing how Bhansali stretches a wafer thin plot lifted out of Sufi poem and made it his film of a lifetime. Deepika Padukone as the coveted Rani Padmini justifies the hullabaloo made over her beauty in this film and reportedly way back in history. Her love for Shahid Kapoor who plays Maharawal Ratan comes through as beautifully as the lust and madness of Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji does in his psychopathic desire to possess the out-of-bounds Queen.
The performances are superlative. Ranveer's and Deepika's were expected to be but even Shahid holds up and will give the real Rajputs a thrill by showing them to not only be brave and courageous, but also righteous and unbending in their principles. He does not cheat and kill Khilji when the opportunity presents itself because that would be compromising the "Rajput ki Shaan. Ranveer on the other hand makes it clear where he is heading right from his first frame in the film to all the popular Bollywood awards later this year. Hopefully they won't nominate him as the Best Villain because here is clearly an actor whose animal instinct and evil presence on the screen makes your skin crawl.
What comes out in the end? What do you take home from the multiplex you went to for Padmaavat half expecting to be done in by the Karni Sena? You come away wondering if this all of this really happened in history and is not just a figment of the wildly creative imagination of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. For the irony of the story of love, lust and war is that Khilji never even lay his eyes on Padmini much lest get his dirty hands on her. She kept Rajput traditions and honour till the end by choosing to kill herself in the all-consuming holy fires before he could possess her body and soul. The Karni Sena should keep that in mind. As for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, he should remember not to play with fire himself again, and to more tightly edit his films and pack them with songs that obliterate the memory of his earlier film.
No other film in recent times has faced as much scrutiny as Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat. From the attack in Jaipur to the ongoing protests by the Rajput Karni Sena, the film has been in the eye of a storm and how! The film starts off with a disclaimer that it is based on Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi's poem Padmaavat. The work first published in 1540, ranks as one of the oldest poems in Awadhi language. The trailer impressed us all and now it's time to find out what the film is all about.
What's hot?
The film is a visual delight and deserves a watch just for the beauty of its frames. Whether it's the introduction of Jalaluddin Khilji or Deepika's entry or the view of the Darbar of Alauddin, every shot leaves you awestruck. Kudos to Sudeep Chatterjee for his spectacular work. The second highlight is obviously Ranveer Singh as Khilji. The only one who looks imposing before him is Raza Murad as Jalaluddin. Ferocious, selfish, lecherous, tactical or crazily power-hungry, he brings alive all shades of Khilji with finesse and fervour. Deepika Padukone looks beautiful and grows on you as the film progresses. She will give you goosebumps in the climax. Shahid Kapoor gives a restrained performance as Maharawal Ratan Singh with his eyes conveying his emotions. Jim Sarbh lends the needed wickedness to his character of the effeminate slave general while Aditi Rao Hydari leaves an impact. The song Ghoomar is wonderfully choreographed and is a feast for the eyes. Ek Dil Ek Jaan also stands out because of its timing and soulful nature. As a story-teller, Bhansali extols on the virtues of Rajputs cherishing their honour and pride.

Something I wrote about BAJIRAO MASTANI holds true for PADMAAVAT as well...
"It's a pre-requisite to possess a mega budget, have exhaustive knowledge of the subject matter, possess nerves of steel to handle the gigantic cast/crew and last but not the least, the vision and fortitude to bring a historical to life on celluloid in today's times. You can face instant rejection from the paying public or face controversies and protests for deviating from facts. The film-maker has to walk a tight rope.
PADMAAVAT everyone's aware has made it to the front page of newspapers and on prime time news on national television. It's the most talked-about, voraciously discussed and hotly debated film of our times. The mileage it received nationwide and internationally has only enhanced the curiosity. Everyone's curious to watch, examine, evaluate and scrutinize PADMAAVAT. The stakes are high and so are the expectations.
The moviegoer in me is enthralled by historicals and mythologicals. I've vivid memories of the classics helmed by the doyens and stalwarts of Indian cinema, such as Sohrab Modi, K Asif and Kamaal Amrohi. Ramanand Sagar's RAMAYANand BR Chopra's MAHABHARAT on television were much revered, while Ashutosh Gowariker's JODHAA AKBAR and SS Rajamouli's BAAHUBALI [1 and 2] reignited my love for period films.
I am no historian to comment on how authentic PADMAAVAT is, but as a cinematic experience, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's latest endeavour left me mesmerized. Let's come to the point right away: PADMAAVAT is a spectacular looking period film that matches international standards. And it's not merely a stunning looking film, it's well structured too: The love story, the simmering tension, the conflict that ensues, the dramatic altercations, the battle sequences and the nail-biting finale... PADMAAVAT brings the past vividly to life.
Final word? PADMAAVAT is not just body beautiful. It has soul too. Delivers solid drama with a terrific climax. It won't be erroneous to state that PADMAAVAT is Bhansali's most accomplished movie to date.
When you think of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the first thing that crosses your mind are the exquisite frames and gorgeous visuals [recall HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM, DEVDAS, GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA and BAJIRAO MASTANI]. Having said that, the celebrated storyteller has mastered the art of striking the right balance between form and content. PADMAAVAT will not only be talked about the compelling visuals, but taut screenwriting and right pacing as well.
PADMAAVAT is a reaffirmation that Bhansali is capable of accomplishing incredible results if he refrains from getting overindulgent. In the past, the supremely talented storyteller had squandered off the opportunity [SAAWARIYA and GUZAARISH]... not this time. The screenplay is focused; it piqued my interest and kept me involved in the narrative, while the characters are well-etched and powerfully portrayed. In fact, the watertight screenplay, which encompasses drama, action and romance, are beautifully juxtaposed in the narrative. In short, everything blends beautifully like a symphony.
Besides captivating screenwriting, PADMAAVAT is bolstered by strong performances. It doesn't take a crystal ball to foretell that not only will Deepika's act dominate the award season next year, but she will also win tremendous love and adulation for her portrayal. She is the lifeline, the strength of PADMAAVAT. It's easily her career-best act, eclipsing her earlier works so far.
This is Ranveer's third movie with Bhansali. Although the actor has delivered sparkling performances in the two collaborations with Bhansali [GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA and BAJIRAO MASTANI], you've got to watch him as the treacherous, vicious, vindictive and villainous Khilji in PADMAAVAT. Actually, Ranveer doesn't just play Khilji; he inhabits him. It's an astounding, gutsy performance that will be talked-about and discussed for sure.
Shahid is tremendous and his act gives depth and feeling to the character. He captures the essence of his part wonderfully, while the camera captures every emotion that flickers across his face. I'd also like to add that the Shahid-Deepika chemistry appears natural and striking.
PADMAAVAT has a noteworthy supporting cast. Jim Sarbh is creepily effective and owns every sequence he's in. Aayam Mehta is fantastic. Ujjwal Chopra is first-rate. Aditi Rao Hydari is unforgettable. Anupriya Goenka doesnt get much scope. Raza Murad is excellent.
One cannot ignore the compositions/soundtrack in a Bhansali film. His music, like the images brought to the screen, should've added depth to the emotions of the characters, but is strictly okay this time. In fact, that's the only hiccup here. The review would be incomplete without a mention of the battle sequences. The volatile, high-octane finale is a visual spectacle. The camerawork is splendid: gorgeous and artistic. The production design is top notch. Dialogue are well worded and garnish the sequences beautifully.
One more thing: The Hindi film industry has badly used and abused 3D, turning it into a gimmicky tool, but Bhansali is one of those rare storytellers who knows how to utilize the technology to his advantage and how it can enhance the overall theatrical experience. Having watched PADMAAVAT on IMAX 3D, I can only state that the results were simply stunning.
On the whole, PADMAAVAT is a remarkable motion picture experience that's backed by proficient direction, spellbinding screenwriting and superlative acting. For Sanjay Leela Bhansali, it's the best title on an impressive filmography. A sure-shot winner at the box-office!
