'Toilet, Ek Prem Katha' review: A film not to be ignored
Anita Iyer/Dubai
Filed on August 10, 2017

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha deals with a socially relevant and not widely discussed topic in our living rooms - open defecation.

As the trailer showcased, the film is about a newly married couple, played by Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar, living in rural-ish India. The wife walks out of her husband's home within days of her marriage as they don't have a toilet at home and she is against the idea of defecating in the open, with the 'Lota Party' of the village.

Enter the age-old traditions of the village, disagreeing with the newer generation on the need to have toilets for safety and better hygiene of the women. How the couple spearheads a revolution and finally makes the village and the government at large agree to build toilets in their community, forms the crux of the film.

Talking about the lead cast, Akshay Kumar has always delivered his A-game in Neeraj Pandey films - be it Special 26, Baby or even the not-so-successful Rustom and this role comes naturally to him. He is playing his age, of a not-married bachelor in his late 30s and dons the role of a helpless crusader, fighting for his wife's cause. Bhumi is a refreshing face in Hindi cinema and made an impressive debut in 2015's Dum Laga Ke Haisha. She plays her role of a traditional wife as convincingly as the strong-willed lady who challenges male stereotypes like covering her head in the house, riding a male bicycle to open defecation.

A special mention should be made of Divyendu Sharma, the excellent actor from Pyaar ka Panchnama, who plays the role of Akshay Kumar's brother. He is the perfect wingman and stands with Akshay through thick and thin and probably has equal, if not more screen time than the leading lady. We would have loved to see more of Anupam Kher too. All we know is his is a man with progressive thoughts and is fixated with Sunny Leone!

The first half of the film is crisp and tightly packed but the same can't be said about the other half. After interval, the film tends to get a bit preachy but that is expected if you have a much-debatable topic like open defecation to be addressed. It might feel a bit predictable but it is not something you can't sit through. Neeraj Pandey, after his last film, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story doesn't disappoint with this one.

Overall, it is a good entertainer which leaves you with a food for thought after you exit the movie hall. Yes, you might hear the word ' toilet' multiple times throughout the film but you will soon get comfortable with it. Go for the film, if you are looking for a well-scripted film backed by power-packed performances by the actors.

Starring: Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Divyendu Sharma, Anupam Kher.

Directed by Shree Narayan Singh

Now playing at theatres in the UAE

Whatever 3-4 reviews I have read so far, reminds me of Aarakshan movie reviews which received similar comments on the second half. So did MNIK. I think it takes the whole of the first half of these kind of movies to prepare the stage for the actual issue to be showcased, and in the second half it gets cooked up because while everyone can identify with the build-up of the issue in its 1st half, not all have the similar approach to deal with these social issues in 2nd halves. Everyone has one's own take and director, in order to accommodate maximum perspectives, mess up with the plot a bit.

The movie didn't face any downright critical reception so far. And that definitely makes it a watch for me. As I liked Aarakshan, MNIK to every bits (boring second half in content-driven movies hardly bother meApprove), I am booking my tickets for first day night show tomorrow. Party

Gulf News :

GOOD FIGHT

The film starts on a promising note where we see a rakish Keshav, who runs a cycle store, being wed to a buffalo under the directions of his pious and conservative father. The animal will offset the misaligned stars, such is the belief.

Director Sree Narayan Singh has a superb knack of shrouding grim social scenarios and regressive traditions with wry humour.

Providing the verve to his vision is the urbane Kumar and Pednekar who do a splendid job of playing small-towners. It is Pednekar's second film and she has an impressive command over her role as a feisty rebel.

Since it begins as a love story, a lot depends on their chemistry and they don't disappoint. They are charming as a couple and their romantic escapades are endearing. It may be a bit disconcerting to see 49-year-old Kumar play a bachelor who is 36 and being smitten by a twenty-something woman, but since the actor is age-defying he seems to pull off the role. Even the bits where he follows her relentlessly is a questionable way of courtship, but Kumar manages to make it less creepy with his charismatic on-screen presence.

CLOGGED MOMENTS

The first half is smooth, but it's the second half that gets constipated. The premise which is intriguing and novel becomes repetitive and laboured. Some of the scenes in the second half seems contrived to make the current government shine and sparkle. Keshav and Jaya's domestic problem snowballs into such a stinker of an issue that the entire state seems to be involved towards the end. There's a good chance that you may have lost interest and your steam by all that drama surrounding a toilet-building battle.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, which clocks 175 minutes, would have benefited from tighter editing and fewer number of songs that showcase courtship, heartbreak and divorce.

Actors Sudhir Pandey (who plays the inflexible, traditionalist dad), Divyendu Sharma (Keshav's jovial brother) and Anupam Kher (the naughty granddad with a penchant for watching raunchy Bollywood songs) complement the lead pair.

While the intention of this film is noble and should be lauded, the love story gets lost in the din of indoctrinating the glorious Indian government's honourable campaign. Watch this if you are in the mood to witness earnest acting performances, but if you are looking for a propaganda-free film, then this is not it.

Stars: 2.5 out of 5
