******************In the honour of the birth of Hanuman, the Vanara god, Hanuman Jayanti is widely celebrated across India on the 15th day of Shukla Paksha, during the month of Chaitra.Hanuman was born to Kesari andAnjana. Anjana was an apsara who was born on the earth due to a curse. Pleased with the intense prayers from Anjana to get a child, Lord Shiva blessed her with a son. She was exempted from the curse on giving birth to Hanuman.According to a legend, when Anjana was worshipping Shiva, Dasharatha, the King of Ayodhya, was performingPutrakama Yagna to have children. As a result, he received a sacred pudding that was to be shared with his wives. Akite snatched a fragment of that pudding and accidentally dropped it in the forest where Anjana was worshipping Lord Shiva. Vayu, the Hindu deity of wind, delivered it to the outstretched hands of Anjana who consumed it. As a result, Hanuman was born. Accordingly, Hanuman is also often referred to as Vayuputra. ******************Hanuman is considered as a manifestation of Lord Shiva and is an ardent devotee of Lord Rama. Hanuman is a symbol of strength, intellect and energy. He is known to exhibit selflessness, loyalty andhumility. He is worshipped for hisunwavering devotion towards Lord Rama.According to one legend, Hanuman once saw Goddess Sita applying Sindooron her forehead. When questioned about the reason, she replied that it was to ensure long life for her husband. On hearing this, Hanuman smeared his entire body with Sindoor so as to ensure eternity of Lord Rama. ******************Therefore, on Hanuman Jayanti people visit temples and apply Sindoor on their foreheads from Lord Hanuman's body as a sign of good luck. On this day, people fast, mediate on him, practice charity and also read Hanuman Chalisa.
