I see what he means. He basically is trying to say dont do gimmicky stuff just for the heck of it/aimed for awards. First of all have your basics in place. For instance I found Paa highly gimmicky no matter how many awards it won. Fan might be a flop but it wasnt gimmicky if you understand it right. The dwarf film could be gimmicky too. That was the first feeling I got and SRK seems to be doing films like Ra1, Fan and dwarf flm for the VFX which is the wrong reason to do a film.
But having said that Rajnikanth is much above Salman in terms to filmography and stardom and they cant be compared. Likewise for Kamal Hassan and SRK. Both cant be compared and Kamal Hassan is a an actor of much higher caliber and much more varied filmography while SRK is just attempting to branch out now. I am not aware of the Tamil film industry to really comment on why Kamal's stocks went down but his dwarf film Appu Raja is a landmark film in Indian cinema and certainly cant be the cause of his stocks going down.
