Why Shah Rukh Khan's performance in Fan is one of his finest ever

Shah Rukh Khan is one of India's greatest actors ever - no two ways about it. His fans swear by his genius-level acting skills, and even his harshest critics admit deep down that the man has brought a wide variety of characters to life, with conviction and grace. However, over the past few years, SRK has been associated with a coupled of films and performances that have left his admirers quite disappointed, and his detractors questioning his script choices and acting prowess.

However, with Fan, the supremely talented performer of old is back. In fact, when all's said and done, his dual act in Fan may just go down as one of his best ever. Here are ten reasons why we think that SRK's double-whammy as moviestar Aryan Khanna and his doppelganger Gaurav Chandna is also one of his most memorable performances ever:

He brilliantly induces Gaurav with wide-eye wonder and childlike innocence that every fan of any star would connect to.

Only to bring out a scary relentlessness in the character the very next moment, which makes you realize that Gaurav is more of an obsessed stalker than a star-struck fan.

SRK takes us through a range of emotions experienced by Gaurav, perfectly capturing his every mood, every heartbreak, and every moment of pain.

And, in doing so, he reminds all of us just how amazing of a dramatic actor he is.

It's the quintessential Shah Rukh Khan of old, playing a quintessential insane character in a captivating way that only he can.

And, then there's his other role of Aryan Khanna, which the actor plays with all the charm and magnetism that made us fall in love with him in the first place.

But, he also evokes a steely resolve and unconquerable spirit in Aryan that mirrors SRK's own qualities, which helped him scale his heights of stardom.

In typical SRK style, he plays off the rest of the cast without hogging the limelight from them.

The best aspect of Shah Rukh's dual act is in how he convinces us that the two central characters are completely different personalities, and yet have some startling similar traits.

In the end, we are transfixed with that same wide-eyed wonder that Gaurav has for him, and are reminded why we fell in love with SRK in the first place.

Only SRK could have done justice to both the Characters - Gaurav and Aryan. No one else could have come closer to such stellar performance

Shah Rukh Khan is out of his comfort zone and great as both Gaurav and Aryan. The film? Well, ye dil maange even more.

It's rarely that I have seen an audience step out of the theatre so sombrely after a Shah Rukh Khan movie. Perhaps in the mood and flow of the film which isn't quite as light-hearted and feel-good as SRK starrers are preordained to be. Fan is completely out of SRK's comfort zone. There is hardly any romance, not a single song, little to laugh about. Instead there is plenty of action, chases (on the walls of Mumbai buildings, Dubrovnik roofs and finally Delhi roads) and unbridled emotions of the very dark and serious kind - in a film that's all about a fan's pursuit of the star and then the star trying to hunt down the fan. And SRK takes a huge stride forward to make the twin roles of Gaurav Chanana and Aryan Khanna his very own in a way that you can't imagine anyone else quite fitting the bill.

Years ago, in an interview, SRK had told me, "I do walks for my films that nobody notices. This is the bane of my life. I do walks to prepare my characters and no one takes note of the ******* serious actor in me." Few would be able to ignore the serious actor in him in Fan. He goes method acting with Gaurav, gives him a distinct gait and mannerisms and the typically Dilli way of talking. He plays to the gallery with him, the underdog you keep rooting for despite his transgressions. It marks a return of the most beloved of his flawed personae of yore " Kabhi Haan Kabhie Naa, Yes Boss, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman " cast in a different, more devious Darr and Baazigar mould. The entire first half goes in setting up Gaurav, at times quite heavily and tediously so. But you still enjoy it all for what the film does with SRK's own 25-year-long stardom"how it creates a new entity of this Fan from bits and pieces of his own earlier avatars. No wonder then, the wistful channelling of SRK's journey as the star, complete with old clips, make perfect sense here. It doesn't irritate like the pointless homages and referencing some other recent YRF films have been prone to doing.

The makers very interestingly also play with the fans in the audience. There would anyhow be many who would travel w/t (without ticket) on a train to Mumbai and stay in room number 205 at Delight hotel in Charni Road and then soon realise the illusions and delusions that surrounds their love for a star. As Gaurav himself says: "Kitna bhi chilla lo awaaz jaati nahin us tak (However much you may scream, your voice won't reach him)." Isn't it SRK talking to his fans when he tells them that he is nothing without them and then again when he tells Gaurav to be more than just a fan?

Gaurav may hog the screen but for me Aryan Khanna, the star in descent (with a new guy Sid Kapoor on the rise), is perhaps even more interesting, both as a character and as the star that we have known SRK as lately. The plastic home, wife and kids notwithstanding there is a restlessness, an edginess, a certain dark sense of humour about Aryan, the star who hasn't quite faded but could be on the verge of imminent oblivion in the future. It rings a bell. The scene in which he finds himself alone in an auditorium which ideally should be full of fans tellingly captures the star at crossroads. In the figure of Aryan the film invokes a star in search of a reinvention while reinventing the star who plays the role, i.e. SRK himself.

While my stand on SRK is unequivocal, the reaction to the film remains conflicted " a bit like how the film ends. There is a sense of completion, of things coming a full circle and yet a feeling of loss. As though, something still remains amiss. The inexplicable extremities of the two characters, their egos and eccentricities, left me a bit incredulous as did the fact that no one intrudes in the conflict between the two (in fact the cops of both London and Mumbai don't care to listen to the star in trouble) and that Gaurav boldly manages to go wherever he wants to with no one stopping him. But then had there been more logic there would have been no film. There are loads of significant moments scattered all over the film, especially about the star-fan binary, which somehow doesn't come together well cohesively.

Having said that one thing is quite clear: SRK couldn't have found a better vehicle than Fan, both as an actor and as a celebration of the highs and the lows of his own stardom. A stardom whose enormity he'd himself find difficult to wrap around his head. As Gaurav tells him: "Rehn de. Tu nahin samjhega (Let it be, you won't understand)." Will stars ever understand their fandom? Not quite. Nor will some logical journalists like yours truly.

One last point. However much Maneesh Sharma may travel from Dilli to Mumbai, London and Dubrovnik, the Capital culture (West Delhi to be precise) firmly stays by his side and in his frames. It's in the lovely lingo ""one way wali girlfriend""in the nostalgia for watching films at Delite, Novelty, Golcha. Why, he even sets up Gaurav's shop in the same marketplace as the one shown in Band Baaja Baarat. No wonder this crib then " that Sohan Halwa from Ghantewala wasn't Sohan Halwa at all, it was actually Karachi Halwa.

As of 1:30PM on Sunday, business remains above average to good, but not excellent - which is what is expected out of a big critically-acclaimed film like FAN on Sunday.

Single-screen business has picked up too, but the occupancy continues to remain on the lower side due to lack of appeal. FAN probably had the widest release for a songless film in the history of the film industry, but even though the opening was decent due to Shah Rukh's presence, business has come crashing down on Saturday and Sunday is running at lower levels than Friday.

The makers would have done well to include the Jabra' song in the first half of the film, both to quickly establish the character of Gaurav and also to increase the appeal of the film at smaller centres. There are reports that even the multiplex audience were disappointed that the Jabra' song wasn't a part of the film.

Looking at the trends, FAN is now looking at weekend business of somewhere around 52 crore mark. Monday will be the biggest test, a good hold will be important if the film has to go on to be a decent grosser.

Fan Second Day Business
Sunday 17 April 2016 14.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network
5

Fan dropped 17% on Saturday and the fall came from mass centres which dropped much more. The drop in the high end premiums was around 10%. Basically on fair value day one business it means all India growth would be very limited. The first two day business of Fan is as follows

Friday - 18,75,00,000
Saturday - 15,50,00,000

Total - 34,25,00,000

The film will manage the highest weekend of the year despite the drop in mass centres. The bigger issue is only support from urban areas and that makes a big number difficult in the long run..

FAN Sunday (Day 3) Box Office Collection Update

31 mins agoby Indicine Team37 Comments2 min read

Shah Rukh Khan's FAN has opened better on Sunday as compared to the morning shows on Saturday, but the average occupancy at centres that we tracked (multiplexes) was still about 5% lower than Friday. The point to be noted here is, SRK films generally take a big opening on Friday morning and FAN was no different.

However, the big rise in occupancy is still missing, which continues to be a worrying sign because it's the late morning, noon and shows until about 8PM that perform the strongest at multiplexes on Sunday. As of 1:30PM on Sunday, business remains above average to good, but not excellent - which is what is expected out of a big critically-acclaimed film like FAN on Sunday.

FAN Box Office Collections in the first 2 days

Wow, you guys are fast! I went away for 2 days and it's on the 3rd thread😲😆

Saw fan yesterday and I loved it!! Just goes to show, with a good director and an actual plot, SRK can hit it out the park! Take a freakin' bow, shah (I forgive you for the atrocity that is crappy new year and ra one - okay not really, still too soon).

SRK was absolutely brilliant as fanboy gaurav. There are so many moments where I went 'awww' at him. Like the part where Aryan calls him and he has total fanboy moment,😆his performance at the show.. it was so heartwarming how his parents - who were irritated by his Aryan obsession - helped him win that contest. And the moment where it went all downhill at the police station, I felt absolutely crushed for gaurav, even though he was the one in the wrong.

Honestly speaking, it's not a perfect movie by any stretch, the second half could've been tighter (there was a chase scene that added absolutely nothing to the plot), but like some other reviewers have already said, I was able to look past the the flaws because of SRK's brilliant performance.

4/5 - an extra .5 just for shah giving it his all.
