As we all know, Shah Rukh Khan's eagerly-awaited FAN finally arrived in theatres this Friday amidst high expectations. Touted as a thriller, the film had managed to create quite a lot of curiosity amongst movie buffs courtesy its captivating trailer.
And to say the very least this Maneesh Sharma-directed venture has managed to live up to and even surpass these expectations in a big way. Today, we tell you why FAN isn't just a compelling film but an absolute must watch for die-hard movie lovers and casual viewers alike.
An Intriguing Storyline: It is common knowledge that FAN revolves around the relationship between a reigning superstar and a passionate fan who looks just like him. In the initial portions of the film this relationship comes across as extremely heartwarming. Moreover, it is quite easy for the audience to identify with the core emotions expressed. However, as the film progresses, the bond takes a dark turn as simple fandom transforms into a dangerous obsession. As such, the narrative of FAN is quite unconventional and layered.
SRK in a Double Role: Right from the word go, it becomes clear that FAN is an SRK show all the way. As the successful superstar Aryan, he essays his role with ease. In fact, his act comes across as quite natural and effortless. Moreover, in certain parts, the act even comes across as an extension of SRK's real-life self. On the other hand, as Gaurav, the 50-year-old showcases his versatility to the fullest. Moreover, his crazed fan avatar at time comes across as a bit reminiscent of his act in the cult classic Darr. Doesn't that sound exciting?
Top Notch VFX: The already power-packed story of FAN makes an even stronger impact on viewers courtesy some top notch visual effects. In fact, the best testimony of this is the way that SRK's Gaurav character is brought to life. The look is pretty convincing and consistent. Moreover, this goes a long way in helping FAN come across as a visually appealing film which is absolutely essential for a fast thriller. The net result is that the audience is glued to the screen for the entire duration of the move.
A Bold Move by SRK: We may not realize it but FAN is the type of film which could potentially have taken a toll on SRK's image. For after all, it is a film in which superstar goes toe to toe with a young kid who adores him. Moreover, its narrative essentially blurs the line between real and reel life. However, these perils notwithstanding the Badshah' took up the role. And the risk the paid off helping SRK re-invent himself, moving beyond the "romantic hero" image. As expected, FAN across as pretty different from his recent outings such as Dilwale and Happy New Year.
It is a Treat for People of All Ages: FAN is attempt at storytelling which may truly satisfy the younger and older generation alike. While younger fans, who grew up idolizing SRK, may find Gaurav to be a reflection of themselves. On the hander hand, the older generation"which gave the thumbs up to the "anti-hero" SRK"could be in for a dose of nostalgia thanks to his Darr like act.
The first screenings of Shah Rukh Khan's Fan prompted ecstatic responses from fans and praise from critics for the actor's performance as a movie star and his 25-year-old look-alike fan who becomes his biggest enemy.
The thriller produced by Yash Raj Films and directed by Maneesh Sharma had standing ovations in some cinemas and was widely hailed as tense, fun and emotionally gripping. It is playing on more than 3,500 screens in India and 1,500-plus internationally.
According to blogger and critic Taran Adarsh the production budget was 85 crore ($12.7 million), 20 crore ($3 million) was spent on P&A and the producers recouped some of their investment by pre-selling satellite rights to Sony . Koimoi.com predicts a first day tally of 20-25 crore ($3 million-$3.7 million), which would eclipse Airlift's 12.35 crore ($1.85 million), the biggest opening day so far this year.
Aamir Khan's Dhoom 3 holds the record for the highest non-holiday opener with 36.22 crore ($5.4 million) and Aamir's PK is the second highest with 26.63 crore ($4 million) on its first day. The biggest blockbuster in SRK's 24-year career is Chennai ExpressEXPR -3.13% which made 226.70 crore ($34.07 million) in 2013, followed by Happy New Year's 204 crore ($30.6 million) in 2014.
"But he also, with the aid of digital effects, plays a creepy lookalike fan called Gaurav, a dopey Delhi guy who owns an internet cyber cafe and wins a local talent contest with his Aryan tribute act. Gaurav's obsessive fan-love turns to fan-hate when he feels his devotion to be slighted and then travels around the world, staging crimes in all the cities where Aryan is on a singing tour, knowing that his erstwhile hero will get the blame.
"It could be that Khan has taken inspiration from fan nightmares such as Scorsese'sKing of Comedy or Stephen King's Misery. By casting himself in both roles, Khan could have intended a complex satire of celebrity narcissism. Or he could just be, well, guilty of a fair bit of celebrity narcissism himself. Either way, it's outrageous and enjoyably absurd."
Gulf News' Manjusha Radhakrishnan judged Khan is splendid as the self-made star but less convincing as Gaurav, opining, "While there are sparks of brilliance shown by Khan while playing the Delhi-based fanboy, he goes overboard in several of the key scenes...A little bit of subtlety would have gone a long way in making it a stand-out scene. Simply put, Khan has a tendency to overdo the exuberance of youth.
Gaurav kept me to the edge of my seat was mesmerised by @iamsrk brilliant performance.. #Fan A must watch TODAY..
