The technological and manufacturing capabilities of the Indian aerospace industry have been improving over the years. India has ambitious and wide-ranging space programs, aiming to develop independent capabilities and indigenous high technologies. The Indian Space Program has been active for more than half-a-century, since its first experiments with sounding rockets in the early 1960s.There has been an unexpected growth in this industry, the last couple of years.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which is fully owned by the Government of India, is the premier aerospace company in the country. It has played a major role in the Defense aviation of India through design, manufacture and overhaul of fighters, trainers, helicopters, transport aircraft, engines, avionics and system equipment. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is now ranked 34th in the list of world's top 100 defense companies. The Indian manufacturing sector is internationally competitive with international quality standards, efficiency and manufacturing facilities. India is fast developing into a manufacturing hub for world corporations wanting to leverage the sector's proven skills in product design, reconfiguration and customization with creativity, assured quality and value addition. The manufacturing capability leverages best-in-class manufacturing processes, state-of-the-art technologies and a technically competent team. The facility has latest CNC Machines, along with robust quality processes & procedures which have resulted in minimizing learning time, technology transfer time and achieve quality and reliability requirements as per global aerospace standards.

The Indian Aeronautics sector are trying to the strengthen and expand operational services in communications and navigation, developing enhanced imaging capabilities for natural resource management, weather and climate change studies, space science missions for better understanding of the solar system and the universe, planetary exploratory missions; development of heavy lift launcher and reusable launch vehicles,  and a human space flight program (Indian Planning Commission, 2013).

Unlike many other space agencies, the Indian Space Research Organization is also the main space manufacturer in India. It assembles satellites and launch vehicles from parts provided by ISRO's eleven centers spread around the country, with production mainly carried out in the southern part of India, in Thiruvananthapuram (launchers), Bangalore (satellites) and Sriharikota. Important centers are also the Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad and National Remote Sensing Centre in Hyderabad. ISRO had 14 716 employees in 2012, distributed between the different centers, and its commercial branch, Antrix, located in Bangalore. It sells remote sensing data imagery, ground station services, satellite launches and exports of satellite components and other products. Antrix is also responsible for selling transponder leases on Indian telecommunications satellites, a market that has seen considerable growth in the last years. Following which formal co-operative arrangements are currently in place with space agencies of 33 countries and 3 multinational bodies, namely, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Egypt, European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts, European Organization for Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, European Space Agency, France, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mauritius, Mongolia, Myanmar, Norway, Peru, Republic of Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Syria, Thailand, the Netherlands, Ukraine, The United Kingdom, the United States of America and Venezuela.

There is an enormous potential and huge opportunities for collaboration and creation of joint ventures in the aerospace sector in India. Major global aviation industries are already eyeing the local market in India and scouting for outsourcing aerospace and defense products as India is fast emerging as a center for engineering and design services.
