Kamal Haasan had few successes like Saagar, Ek Duje Ke Liye, Sanam teri kasam, Chachi 420.

Rajinikanth saw success only in multi starrers like Andha Kanoon, Geraftaar, Hum. Otherwise he was flop.

I think it's due to language barrier and looks. Rarely seen actors from South speaking Hindi effortlessly. They have a certain accent and the way they speak their dialogues is laboured.

Why should they even aim to be stars in BW?
They are stars by their own right in South Indian movies. No one has made a serious attempt to be in BW. They are HUGE down south. Why would they want to go up north?

Sudharshan CHAKRA - Lets put it this way. The God is happy giving Darshan in TN. TN people are not letting him go away any further north of Tirupathi.

East Indian Bengali heroes are dark looking and South Indian Tamil / Telugu heroes are very rough and dark looking. North Indians don't like such tanned actors.

South stars did try to make it in BW. That's why they signed so many Hindi films in 80s and early 90s.

Sridevi and Jayaprada made it. To some extent Kamal Haasan also. Others did not. Including Chiranjeevi who had tried his best in late 80s and early 90s.

Audience of every region matters to an artiste. This is why they release dubbed versions of their films in North.

Wasn't Vikram raving about how North audience knew him due to Aparachit?

Yes they have tried but not made it.

The south Industry is big on its own. I dont think they needed to make a mark in BW to become famous. Rajnikanth has an international audience and thats not thanks to Bollywood. Its on his own merit.
And honestly, dont stereotype every south-indian as having an accent and dark-looking. There are many south-indians who are in bollywood and they do not have an accent. Deepika,Aishwarya,Sridevi,Sunil Shetty all of them have their roots n South India.
