Chapter 40

Patta escorted the heavily pregnant woman through the narrow forest path as they tried to figure a way out of the place. He was sure that Changezi was already in the forest which made them potential targets for the creature. The woman at first had refused to leave the hut as it was the only place she had left but on being reminded of her unborn child she agreed. The storms were unpredictable so as soon as Patta saw the morning rays he packed the essentials and they took off. At the moment they were resting under the shade of a tree when he saw the woman scrunch her face in pain making him worry. But she calmed him down but Patta knew the signs he knew that they needed to get some place safe and probably with women or Vaidji around because the child was ready to make a grand entry and he (Patta) would be totally useless if that happened

Pratap looked at his mother who was staring back at him

SB: Are you alright?

Pratap: No Majhli Maa and how can we be alright especially after what you have told us about the latest developments

SB: Guru Raghvendra believes that Rao Mamrakh has reached out to the Mughals. They might be planning an attack

Suddenly Sagar ran out without a word as if he had been bitten by a bug or something startling everyone

Vikram: What happened to him?

SB: We need to think about what our next step should be

While everyone pondered over the next step Sagar came back with two soldiers who were carrying his model. He placed it at the centre and then called everyone

Sagar: So Guruji is right Rao Mamrakh has allied with the Mughals and is planning a siege on Chittor and the other states

Vikram: Yes but for the siege itself they need to have really huge army to be able to fight both Mewar and Marwar together

Sagar: I know and that is why I brought this model

Shakti: Bhai?

Sagar: I now know the secret of the barren land or at least have an idea about it

Pratap: Go on

Sagar: For the siege to be successful Mamrakh needs to plan it in a way that both Mewar and Marwar are under attack at the same time

Vikram: So that they cannot help each other

Sagar: Exactly for that he needs to bring in the Mughal army without raising any doubts and the only way he can do that is to hide them

SB: Yes but how does he plan to hide them

Ajabde: There was construction going on for dormitories and residences on the periphery of Bijolia. They said it was for the poor and downtrodden but many believed that it was for the girls

Shakti: So we have the hiding place but that still does not solve the puzzle. Where will they come from?

Sagar: Here (pointing to the barren land) this land is equidistant from both Mewar and Marwar. If I was Mamrakh (thank heavens I'm not) then I would utilise this land as my base from where the army will be dispatched to the two kingdoms. All the weaponry, military forces, and animals literally everything will be kept here. This piece of land is their Khema

Chapter 41

Everyone stood still on learning the significance of the land and how it was going to be used. They were all thinking of the consequences when JB and VB arrival was announced. As the ladies came in everyone realised they were tensed and sad. VB looked at Ajabde and hugged her tight kissing her forehead followed by JB who made her sit with them constantly running her hands on her hair

Ajabde: Are you alright?

JB swallowed down a lump in her throat and looked at her but she didn't know how to break the news to the girl sitting by her side

Pratap and the boys came around them: RaniMa you look worried. Please tell us what the matter is

JB: On our way back one of our informers met us and passed on a very important piece of news about Bijolia

Sagar: If it is about the land then we already know it Badi Ma

JB: It's not about the land Sagar. She looked at Ajabde who stared at the woman in front of her and realisation dawned upon her

Ajabde: No...she started moving backwards No that can't happen

JB: Ajabde beta please

Ajabde: Say the words I won't believe you until you say the words to me

VB looked down while others tried to decipher the scene in front of them

JB: Ajabde beta your mother (takes a breath) she is no more my child. Hansa died and her last rites took place yesterday in Bijolia.

Ajabde (numb): How?

VB: The informer said that she had experienced a major trauma due to which she and the baby went into distress. She bled out during childbirth and the baby was still born

Ajabde got up on unsteady feet with Pratap supporting her as she was about to fall but the girl was lost as she took in the news of her mother's death. Without saying a word she left while the others looked on

SB looked at Phool and Subho to go after the girl but JB stopped them.

JB: she needs to process this on her own Sajja behena. She needs to do this alone

Then she looked at her sons all gathered there - it's time to make preparations. We need to come out of hiding. It's time to gather all resources and prepare for the war

Chapter 42

Ajabde had no idea where she was walking all she knew was that her mother and her sibling were both gone leaving her behind. She didn't care for the thorny bushes that scraped her arms leaving behind red angry marks on her hands and even some on her neck. She kept on walking going deeper into the forest without paying attention to her surroundings unaware that her smell had reached Changezi who was at the time sniffing the air and was now headed towards her

Pratap went to look for Ajabde but could not find her anywhere - he searched her hut, the temple even the dangal sthal but when he found no trace of her he got worried. A soldier informed him about her walking into the forest alone-Pratap ran after her knowing fully well that she might get into some trouble

Changezi followed the scent that had turned potent due to the blood that made its presence known (scratches and scrapes). He moved so silently without making a noise that a normal person wouldn't even notice his presence just like Ajabde who was on her knees crying her heart out mourning the loss of her loved ones. As she came into view Changezi got ready to attack when a rustling sound made her look up and he retreated

Pratap found her on her knees crying bitterly for the loss she suffered. He gathered her in his arms allowing her to take strength from him and as she hugged him tight accepting the embrace he gently moved his fingers over her hair. She tried to be strong but could not find the courage to do so thus she allowed her to be weak - crying into his chest while he silently became her support. Rains descended drenching them both, tears dissolving in the rain washing away the pain. Eyes met in an intense gaze as two souls became each other's strength. The space between them reduced as they came closer but before the lips could seal a noise interrupted - a rough hoarse voice cried out in joy, Pari my pari!!!!

Changezi couldn't believe his luck that he had found her again. His Pari, who had rubbed balm on his wounds during those dark nights when he was whipped again and again for not hurting the innocents, sang him a lullaby to make him go to sleep and stayed with him through the nights but disappeared at daybreaks. She was in front of him though he realised that she was taller than before and her facial features had also matured, she was a bit curvier from the waist and her hair was a thicker mane.

Looking at the creature standing before them made Pratap go into warrior mode but Ajabde stood still and then she called him out by the nick-name she had given him
