Piku released on May 8. Bombay Velvetreleased a week later. While Piku rested on Deepika Padukone's able shoulders,Bombay Velvet was mounted on the once-upon-a-time successful shoulders of Ranbir Kapoor. Piku opened at a decent Rs 5 crore, which was good given that the film was a small budgeted slice of life flick.Bombay Velvet also raked in Rs 5 crore but was termed a disaster. Why you may ask. Here's why.
Piku is a sensibly budgeted film which had entered the hit zone within days of its release. Bombay Velvet, made on a lavish budget of over Rs 100 crore has bigger investments to be recovered. While Piku and BV earned in the same range on its opening day, Piku had an exceptional opening weekend, thanks to the positive word of mouth that ensued while BV suffered a huge setback with negative reviews and bad word of mouth almost putting the final nail in its coffin.
With around Rs 16 crore in its kitty after the first weekend, Bombay Velvet can be called one of the biggest disasters in Bollywood. Made on a grand canvas, with huge sets and unwarranted promotions, Bombay Velvet had to perform exceptionally well in the first weekend itself to recover its investments. But that sadly did not happen. Instead it was still Deepika's Piku which maintained its powerful hold on the audiences and hit another home run. At a time when a heavy budgeted film was pitted against a relatively smaller film, it yet again proved that content is indeed the king at the box office.
While BV earned Rs 16 crore in its first three days, Piku which had already zoomed into the Rs 40 crore safe zone added another Rs 14 crore in the second week, despite facing stiff competition from the Ranbir Kapoor film. Now that in itself is a sure win for the actress and the Piku team. For BV, they have already started losing screens to Piku and it seems the film is en route to put up a disastrous total at the box office in total.
